I remember reading about that and thinking what a bummer since the 1.6L Kent we got over here in the Capris and Pintos was a weak 1-bbl carbed version, and everyone was going OHC on their 4-cylinders. My concerns were misplaced because Ford went all out and developed a crossflow head and 2-bbl carb for the Fiesta 1.6L. \n\nIn '78, VW downsized the Rabbit engine to 1.5L, making the Kent Fiesta the first hot hatch in America. I bought a used 1980 Fiesta \"S,\" right after owning a '78 Scirocco, and loved that car. There was no redline on the tach, and I don't know why, because the engine would pull and pull. To this day it's the most rev-happy pushrod engine I have ever experienced. Sounds great too, check out the video.\n\nIt was amazing how much room the tiny Fiesta had in the rear seat. With the seat folded, it was like having a minivan. The only thing I didn't like about my car was the 12\" wheels. The 13 inchers shown here fix that and look tremendous. Other than the stripes, I don't think it had any options. Whoever bought it originally declined the glovebox door option, and opted for stickers on the bumpers instead of plastic rub strips! I have since upgraded the car with various Ghia, S Model, and RS parts as I have come across them. I'm glad you pointed out how spacious the back is with the seat folded down, you can easily fit a Honda Z50, or a Capri V6 block, if necessary! \r\n\r\n@PDXBryan thanks! With the Pintos somewhat misplaced bad reputation (the fuel tank issue was corrected with the shield between the axle and tank as well as the cam issues on the 2.3 OHC) the Fiesta probably won out with many buyers though they were only available here in the states with a manual transmission. \r\nI once looked at one of these for sale in the mid 80's for a commuter. It was the well appointed Ghia version with the alloy wheels and under dash air conditioning. Probably should have bought it but the over 100k mileage kept me from closing the sale. \r\nI wish Ford gave us the 3-door of the current version or the Puma or Ka here in the states. I was about 12 years old at the time and the Fiesta was incredibly easy to drive. The car was great in the snow and always achieved great gas mileage. Near the end of the car's life it was burning a quart of oil every 100 miles and it was replaced by a one year old 1986 Nissan 200sx XE coupe with a 5 speed. Funny how Beige and Brown cars survived, while all the other colors seem to have vanished years ago.\r\n\r\nFor reference, I found this website that has photos of this car from before I owned it. It was used as a tow behind, which is probably why it survived so well. Those metal mudflaps were highly dangerous, but functional. I replaced them with NOS Mk1 Fiesta front mudflaps, from Egypt of all places. There quite of bit of surface rust through out the car that should be addressed soon. These cars have thin sheet metal and rust will eat through it quickly. \r\n\r\nI know these cars well. I've owned 3 in the past and currently own a '79 that will be getting quite a bit of work this winter. It's body is comparable to this one. I'm rebuilding the engine since I want to up the horsepower, I expect to near double HP at the wheels\r\n. Five & six speed transaxles from later Fords will bolt up but new mounts and halfshafts will have to be fabricated. \r\n\r\nOne interesting swap would be the drivetrain from a Fiesta ST into these cars. That obnoxious door buzzer takes me right back to the '80s. I had four of these over the years and loved them dearly. The best was a build similar to this in orange. Eventually the torque broke the inner driveshaft carrier and the bearing swung down and sawed a hole through the oil pan. I really hope this sells well enough to bring some of these out of hiding. I'd really like to find one closer to home. An interesting tidbit about the 1st Gen. Fiesta is that the grille is composed of fixed air foil slats that allow air to flow through to the radiator at low speeds while at higher speeds, because of the angle of the air foils, direct the air to go up and over the hood and car body. \r\n\r\nAlthough I have never owned one, I've had several experiences with the 1st Gen Fiesta. During the fall of 1976 I was attending Art Center College of Design in my 5th semester of studying to become a car designer. That fall, Ford was the industry sponsor for our next project which was to be the next Mustang based on the recently introduced Fiesta. When we heard of the project that we all pretty much moaned the thought of a FWD Mustang with tiny tires. At the time, Ford was just getting in aero design for it's future projects, so we had to consider aerodynamics in our design concepts. To help us along on the project, Ford gave us a quick lesson on good and bad aero in car design, a full-size blue-line package drawing of the Fiesta, which I still have, and a binder with the project timeline. For the project, we were to produce a design, a scale clay model, and a full-size tape drawing rendering. For my initial design concepts of the Mustang, I wanted to offset the forward weight bias of the Fiesta platform by using small surface heat exchangers/radiators just in front of the rear tire openings along the lines of what Brabham F1 later did in 1978. Unfortunately my side radiators were quickly nixed by my instructor, a former Ford Design exec, despite me trying hard to sell the design concept as tying back to the original Mustang design of fake side scoops on the side. To make the project more realistic, Ford threw a monkey wrench in the project when they visited some weeks into us working on the project and announced that new design was cancelled and that we had to design the new Mustang based on the Mustang II sheet metal! Hearing that, we moaned even louder than before! To make more difficult, Ford told us that we had to use the existing roof and doors stampings along with all glass! We were allowed one double-stamp of any of the existing sheet metal that we had to use. A double stamp is like it implies, double stamping a piece of sheet metal or in this case, double-stamping say the 1974 Mustang door metal to go with the new front and rear design. That's why I saved this car in the first place, as there isn't any serious rust in any of the common Fiesta rust out areas (front valence/quarters/arches/etc). It did need front floor pans due to leaky door seals, which I imported from UK and installed. I agree the new owner should keep an eye on any surface rust, during my ownership I have brush touched up a few surface rust areas with rust sealer, followed by brush applied touch up paint. Waxing it every 6 months or so seems to keep the rest of the exterior in check while maintaining the patina.\r\n\r\nAnd those leaky door seals have since been replaced. The best addition were the huge seven-inch round Cibie driving lights mounted on the front bumper. AVO and I debated installing a BDA engine in the Fiesta, but the transmission and drivetrain might not have been able to handle the BDA's power. Evidently the XR2 tranny was stronger, and closer geared. Great car, though, particularly when the Webers opened up, and drowned out early Cure and New Order playing on the Blaupunkt cassette stereo. At the time in 1987 I had owned two Fiestas, a '78 that was totaled when it was hit while parked in front of my house and a '79 that I was currently driving. I decided to go road racing and decide that SCCA's class Improved Touring was where to start and a Fiesta was the car. I found a '80 for sale and it turned out to have come out of California (I live near Chicago) so it rust free. I built the car and raced it successfully from 1988-1995. I won a couple of local season championships. I then sold it.\n It went to a young guy who wanted to get started in racing himself, so the car went off to New York state. He raced it in IT and won a regional championship with it. He later upgraded the car from IT to Prod. The car again did well in that class but for some reason he had to sell the car and it was purchased by a gentleman from Michigan, a Brit. \n He moved the car from Prod class to GT-4 then GTL. He won quite a number of national races with it and took the car to the Run Off National Championship at least twice. One of those years he was favored to win it all but a mechanical issue pryor to the race prevented him from getting a qualifying time so he had to start the race last. I thought mine had a cover for the rear hatch. This was the first front wheel drive car I owned. As I look at all the photos of this machine, I can still smell mine, almost 40 years on. Pretty wild. This is a super clean design (I also didn't know this was from Tom Tjaarda), with the \"Kent\" 1.6L, which of course was widely used in Formula Ford. The car was light and nimble, with a good deal of torque steer, and terminal understeer in the wet made for many left-foot braking adventures (or misadventures, depending on how successful the weight-transfer exercise was executed). These are light, tossable cars, with a rorty engine that likes to rev, as it must of course with only a 4-speed. Minimal sound deadening, and in retrospect I don't know if I'd really want to be in a collision in one of these. In my youthful abandon, I eventually blew it up 32 miles before the warranty expired, and had it towed to the dealer for a no-charge engine rebuild. I drove it for a year after that, then traded it in '83 for a new Gen 3 Civic Si. Now THAT car was a hoot. I still have a speeding ticket for 105 in a 55. While on the way to work in the snow he was driving along at the speed limit or a bit over. A police car pass him going in the opposite direction. The police car then slowed and made a U turn with the \"lights\" going on as it did so. Not feeling that he had done anything wrong my friend continued on. The police car fell further and further back and finally the lights went out and my friend lost sight of it. \nWhen he arrived at work he was the first to arrive, it being a small company of less than 10 employees total. The street the company was on had a big drift across it but my friend got up a bit to speed and plowed into it. He didn't make all the way through so he tried to back up but the car was stuck. Getting out of the car he looked thinks over and decided to get back in the car, put it in reverse and then get out and push to help get it unstuck. During one west coast club meet, Bill Rush from Portland area needed some pushrods for his motor to get back home from Vancouver, BC ...gave him a set, and he made it home....if you ever meet Bill, ask him how he burnt down the Ford dealership in Beaverton! Never did the dual weber upgrade, but jetted the 2 barrel carb, and for maximum audio effect, took the air cleaner lid off to hear the throaty rasp of that little carb gulping air. One afternoon heading home form work was pulling a 6 grand 3rd gear shift and there was a BIG bag, then a rattle, rattle, rattle.....car kept running, and seemed ok, drove it a couple more weeks till we pulled the head and found the #2 exhaust valve had a pie shaped piece missing from its face....still have the valve as a souvenir. Was going to get personalized license plates 1DRCR (Wundercar) of GTI ETR.... These cars with their Kent engine were basically indestructible and reliable AF. Basic, easy to maintain and repair, and consistently 30+MPG. Whoever gets this one, take care of it, but don't be afraid to run it hard....it won't break.
