It was a trade-in at the local Ford dealer, where my Brother worked. The dealer was going to wholesale it because the camshaft bearings had spun, and starved the rocker arm assembly for oil. I wasn't quite old enough to drive at the time, but I bought it anyway. My Dad, Brother and I yanked the engine, tore it down, had new camshaft bearings installed and spiked in place, and replaced the rocker arm assembly with one from a junkyard. I drove it to about 70,000 miles with few issues. It would chew through front tires every 12,000 miles because, as I recall, the front alignment wasn't particularly adjustable. Snapped a fan belt on the NY Thruway one day commuting home from college, pulled over to the side of the road, installed my spare (kept among the spare parts and tools in the trunk) and proceeded on my way. I had a lot of good times in that car, and I'd love to own another one, but this one is rusted in exactly the same places mine was (and mine was a Northeastern car.) I eventually sold mine for $600 after it chewed through 3 generators in rapid succession. I installed the fourth and sold it. The woman that bought it drove it trouble free (!!) for quite a while longer. (It seems I got three badly rebuilt generators in a row. Fourth time was the charm.) I think the cost to bring this little beauty back will far, far exceed it's value. Were it not for the extensive rot, I'd be in on this in a minute, even with shipping costs. It listed at over $2500. The heavier slower Pinto replaced the Cortina in the USA because of the exchange rate and prices, I believe. The GT had 85 horsepower rated at the brochure, while the Pinto had 60 rated at the brochure. The cam, t bbl carb, and standard tubular headers helped the power on the GT. The 1600cc Pinto and Cortina blocks were different, as were the heads. Pinto blocks were heavier, particularly around the main bearings. The Pinto had a full Heron head with a completely flat bottom head. USA Cortinas had a combustion chamber in the head. All later 1600cc Kent motors ended up with the stronger block and Heron heads, but not by 1970, as far as I know. 1970 was a banner year for the Cortina, as fuses were introduced in the electrical system for the first time. Doug is correct that a 1970 GT would not have the trailing arms. My '1968 does not, and my 1967 does. have them. The trailing arms definitely control the rear suspension better, but also introduce some NVH. I strongly prefer the trailing arms. \r\n\r\nThe big problem with this car is that the bodywork, interior, and paint will cost every penny in labor to repair cosmetically compared to a car like a Mustang would, but with no hope of a financial return. https://www.aldridge.co.uk/services/schematic.cfm?id=3 sell interior kits, carpet, door cards, I believe. You will not easily finds wheel cylinders for a GT, unless someone has started remanufacturing them. These are fun cars. There are lots of specialists who can extract decent power from the motor. I have searched the overseas websites and found that there are a lot of parts available either from eBay UK or various vendors. \n\nYes the car looks a little rough and it will take some effort to bring back to the level that a new owner may want. It could fun to make it a vintage race car or a just a fun driver.\n\nI have been doing restorations for some time and this car has a very good foundation, the floor pan and undercarriage are in remarkable condition with no structural issues at all. Most of the paint is original and still shiny in some areas like the trunk. \n\nWhen you look at the pictures of the trunk area and undercarriage around the right quarter you can see that there is not any structural concerns resulting from the right quarter panel that is damaged, These panels are available. Also I believe the the rust present on the fenders is minor and easily repaired. That led my father into purchasing not one, but two LoCorts, as well as a few Deluxe and wagons. My brother owned a wagon and received the 68 GT that my dad had just restored before he passed away 16 years ago. The Deluxe of mine has been fun...and frustrating.. converting the stock Deluxe motor to some GT specs (headers, new manifold and 2 barrel Weber, manual choke, etc). Mine has 59K miles and is slowly getting up to speed mechanically. I'm in SF, so this is just a jaunt down the coast from me. \r\n\r\nJust a quick note: while parts are somewhat available in the UK, shipping costs almost make them prohibitive. Not fully, but almost. With body work and paint, you might be lucky to have a decent running and good looking car for about 15k. These cars are getting more and more rare in the states. If I wasn't working on my 68 deluxe and had the space, I could be in on this. I've had mine for a long time. The '67 GT is the best looking one I have ever seen. It cost me $4900.00, but that was in 2001. I picked it up in North Vancouver BC and drove it to Oregon. The only problem I had was the ferry to Port Angeles was in drydock, so I had to go back to Vancouver from beautiful Horseshoe Bay and come back through Vancouver. Even though the The 1968 4 Door GT was very presentable for $1500.00. My dad picked it up for me sight unseen in Fresno and drove it to Anchorage for me without incident. I used to see one on 99W on the way from Tillamook to Eugene to autocross my 1968 4 door GT. Used to see one in the blackberries somewhere south of Eureka CA on the way to revenue of the Giants. I'm curious if it has an air pump. Couldn't tell. My 2968 had one. I still have it. I had to smog it in Anchorage like 1991 or 2. I got it to pass emissions with a cam and dual Delorttos and no air pump. Anchorage accepted that. Potted head from British American Transfer. (BAT) too.
