Looks like the original cast iron distributor was replaced with a later aluminum one.\r\nCurious steering stabilizer adaptation. This 2000 would have been a 12V car. The up to the 1800's were 6V except the tiSA I had was 12V.\r\nClean chrome rocker panel covers? This car is truly a time traveller defying the laws of physics about oxidation. Love it. This week as I was back in the \"office\" a friend and fellow traveller in all things NK brought this listing to my attention. This car is no doubt a very good example of of what people older than I used to call a \"Cooking\" version of the platform. \r\n\r\nThe 2 Liter sedan was introduced along side the BMW's new flagship halo car and replacement for the discontinued 3200CS, the 2000CS. This is no surprise as the the 2000CS is itself based on the NK sedan platform. Given NK production was at full tilt due to its popularity and success, BMW gave over production of the CS to Karmann - relationship that would last through the E9 production run and into the early E24 production. 2 Liter Neue Klasse cars started coming off the line in January of 1966 for the 1966 model year - around 3/4 months after 2000CS production commenced at Karmann. \r\n\r\n The 2 liter motor made it to production to quench the public demand for more power and better compete with Mercedes Benz's popular and powerful family of finback platform cars. To differentiate the new 2 liter cars from the rest of its stable mates BMW re-drew the lines of its first NK platform - coded 115 - and gave it a rectangular aerodynamic head lamp treatment and and a horizontal tail lamp treatment that referenced back tot the headlamp shape. Most everything else, for now, was left nearly the same. BMW was already working on a more than skin deep design refresh that would make the NK more comfortable and more modern and those changes would come for the entire range in 1969. \r\n\r\nThis particular car according to its VIN belongs to the first run of left hand drive cars made from January, 1966 all the way to July of 1968. The total number of Series I cars (100HP, 2 liter cars with a flat dashboard) in this run was 51,324. This data comes from a chassis number survey printed by BMW for its North American dealer network in the late 1980's. I can't confirm its accuracy on certain details but it has been helpful to me and my fellow enthusiasts in determining some aspects of BMW cars and motorcycles built in the Post War period up to the late 1980's. \r\n\r\nSo though this is not a rare car it is certainly an interesting one and if you like the way it drives it deserves a look as an affordable entry into the classic BMW world. I am partial to these cars and admittedly biased as I own one myself. If you want to get the best out of this chassis the next owner should try to find a set of original factory sway bars or if anyone in the aftermarket is still making them a set of those. I would also switch to three point safety belts. Trust me, I speak from experience. If you look carefully you should be able to find the belt weld nut attachment point under the headliner just above the B pillar. Since the car is a 1967, a potential buyer from California should not have a problem registering the car as EPA rules did not take effect till the 1968 model year. As this car runs a single circuit braking system, I would make absolutely sure the system is in perfect condition before setting off on a long trip to lets say, \"Vintage at the Vineyards.\" I am also not terribly fond of muffler shop exhaust installations as they rarely sound good, are built of lower quality metal than factory parts and don't last very long. As far as I know you can still buy the BMW exhaust for this car from BMW but I haven't checked in a while. As an alternative I could recommend an Abarth aftermarket exhaust. I know this sounds crazy but I'm sure some BATer's will confirm that there is a vendor in the Netherlands that is selling NOS Abarth exhausts for a variety of European cars on Ebay as well as his own website. I have had the opportunity to put one in a NK car for a client. The fit and finish are excellent. It is best to use factory hangers and clamps for best results. Oh, and it sounds great. This is probably a bad thing to say but I do not recommend an exhaust from Walloth & Nesch. Their contractors fit and weld quality are just not there yet. I have recently had to replace a WN header pipe on an '02 the leaked at the weld joint. I used a new BMW header pipe purchased from my favorite parts department. I have had recent experience hanging a stainless exhaust set from WN for another client on an E9 and I have to say that went much better. The system sounded good and though it took time to get it fitted correctly with factory hardware, I was pleased with the outcome. \r\n\r\nWell before I get too far off base. I have to say again this car would make a great entry into the classic BMW world. Until these cars are better appreciated for there build quality and drivability, they won't set any records at auction but speaking as a NK owner myself, I encourage you guys to get out there and drive a good example. And remember, though there are plenty of good bargains in the collector car world there are no bargains as far as good quality work. If you do decide to step up the quality of this car I would defiantly work on the drive shaft, half shafts and exhaust first, then move not to replacing all the suspension rubber and overhauling the brake/clutch hydraulics. The difference will be night and day. You will go from just driving it to shows to wanting to take it on vintage tour events. The outside mirror and half shafts are such an easy fix, especially when you have the parts just laying around. I regret not placing a bid on it.
