Terrible story about how I lost the car to an unscrupulous restorer, but that is water under the bridge.\nMy comment, though, is that I specifically remember mine had leather 'gaiters' covering all four leaf springs - not only protected them against the weather so there wouldn't be rust as you see in the photos, but also served to keep the grease between the leaves allowing them to slide smoothly against each other, supposedly making the ride a bit better. The buyer might want consider having all the leaf springs removed, dismantled, cleaned, re-greased, covered with new leather gaiters and then remounted on the car.\nI also wonder how well the Bijur chassis lubrication system works. The deal was made and the two of them flew from Vancouver to Calgary to pick up the car and then drove it back to Vancouver. The adventure was documented by a painting of that particular automobile, which the family of our late friend still has to this day. I was fortunate enough to visit Robert at his studio when I was a young man and purchased two or three of his works, which still hang in my home today. These cars are remarkably usable in comparison with most cars of this era. The brakes are mechanical but fitted with large drums and have a gearbox driven brake servo mechanism which provided braking assistance, based on the speed of the rear drive shaft, allowing for brakes that in most conditions rival cars 30-40 years newer. The only time they really require extra pressure is when stopping at slow speed on a steep downhill. This era of Bentley also doesn't have a synchro on first or second gear, which means you either have to double clutch or skip gears when shifting up. That said, the gearing is very deep allowing for easy hill climbs and the car is perfectly happy running at 10 miles per hour is 3rd gear, so once you get past the first two gears, there's no reason to shift down until you stop. On flats, I generally start in second and on steep uphills, I start in first, rev a little higher, then skip directly to third. These cars are definitely very useable and I've done a couple long distance tours with mine, including a trip along the Oregon coast into the California redwoods, then a long way back, crossing two mountain ranges for the total of a 1200 mile round trip in 9 days. The car proved faultless in all conditions. All of the pre-war Rolls and Bentleys I've owned, plus a few of the immediate post-war ones, used the Bijur system to lubricate the chassis.\r\nWhen you press the Bijur pedal, centrally-located up under the dash, it squirted oil (just regular engine-style oil) through a series of tubes to dozens of friction points throughout the chassis. As I remember, the instructions were to press the pedal about once every hundred miles of travel, and, as it was an open system, yes, it used to drip like crazy.\r\nThis car looks like it still has the system in place as you can see the tubing in some of the underbody shots and you can see the oil reservoir (a little black 'can' on the firewall).\r\nNo, the Bijur didn't lubricate the leaf springs. These were thoroughly greased between the leaves during assembly, then covered with leather 'gaiters' to hold in the grease and protect from water and road grime - no rusty springs!\r\nOne thing I remember as seeming almost magical was the operation of the thermostat-controlled fins in the radiator shell. I'm pretty sure the engine had no internal thermostat to control the water temperature and flow - it was wide open all the time. Instead, the fins could completely close, shutting off all air flow through the radiator. As the engine heated up, the fins would gradually open to admit the air. While driving, the fins would constantly adjust the opening to maintain the proper engine temperature.\r\n I remember I used to start the car, then stand in front of it, watching the fins open. Although you would think that this might be a large lumbering beast, it is actually almost small in scale. Made to navigate narrow country lanes, it has a cozy feeling when sitting in either the front or back seat. But as others here have pointed out, the Bentley was a \u201cdrivers\u201d car and that\u2019s evident from watching the old movies of Robert Genn bouncing around a gymkhana course and putting the front wheel in a shoe box sized spot. This car has been properly driven and cared for since it was screwed together. There is no doubt about that. It starts up immediately and hums and whirs like like a Swiss watch. I understand that \u201ctop hat\u201d refers to the way the upper body sits squarely above the waistline. The razor edge describes the angular edges. This was considered an advanced, Art Deco design. A sister car stood on the Freestone & Webb stand at the 1937 Earls Court auto show. \r\n\r\nThe second boot hatch is very clever concept. One can add luggage capacity by opening the primary hatch, and strap on a trunk above the tool compartment. With a trunk in place, you can still access the boot through the upper hatch. \r\n\r\nI had a nice conversation with James Genn last night. Like him, I inherited my Bentley from my father.
