Almost all of the suspension bushing on this car are the two piece tapered rubber bushings which are quite easy to replace if needed. I'm sure I have a bunch of extras laying around I will throw in if desired. As with most things British the oil leak is confusing. About two years ago I had a small drip from the rear end which went away, and yes I checked and there is oil in the differential. When I pulled the car out this spring, there was a spot on the garage floor about 4 inches in diameter below the area between the bell housing and the engine. This didn't work, as most Series 2 owners will attest, as they are famous for frame cracking. \r\n\r\nThe 7 Series 1 frame is quite reliable, by comparison. \r\n\r\nThe Series 1 had a full belly pan, with a wired and rolled opening for the sump where it was necessary for the BMC A series powered versions. \r\n\r\nThe engine on the Series 1 was set back, which resulted in the narrow, short foot wells. The engine/gearbox was moved forward in the Series 2.\r\n\r\nAll the body panels of the Series 1 were alloy. No polyester panels were fitted. \r\n\r\nThe rear suspension of the Series 1 was a direct copy of the BMC sourced axle, long trailing arms and lateral diagonal locating link of the Lotus 11 \"Clubman\" version. Note that the 11 preceded the 7, with the 7 using the 11 series 2 basic chassis layout and solid rear axle. suspension. \r\n\r\nA further variant, the Lotus 7 \"America\" had a BMC A 948cc engine and gearbox as standard, with a scuttle mounted battery, long clamshell fenders and windshield wipers. 15\" Wire wheels were optional, though I have never seen one with disc wheels. I owned one of these for a few years. Mine had the 948 with the 649 cam, and a BMC straight cut race gearbox with wire wheels. I fitted the Dunlop vintage race tires in 4.50X15 front, and 5.00X15 rear. Even with the little 60 HP Sprite engine, the car could be throttle steered with ease. FUN! BTW, it weighed, with windshield, spare wheel, full tank of fuel and full road equipment, 907 lbs. Of course, I removed the spare, full windshield (Brooklands screens then fitted), windshield wipers and some other stuff. It weighed somewhat less, then. \r\n\r\nThe later Caterhams and other 7 derived cars took quite a bit from the original 7, restoring the chassis triangulating tubes for strength. \r\n\r\nI am sure that the performance of this flathead Ford version is exciting enough. Remember, anything that could reach 60 in less than 12 seconds back then was a relatively quick car. \r\nAlso, the available BMC A engine at that time was a 948, which had a torque improvement compared to the 1170 Ford. The real reason for having a BMC A was the potential available if modified, as versions of the engine were already successful in F Jr. \r\n\r\nThis is an exceptionally nice 7. Full disclosure. It usually doesn't fire on the first start but the car was in a heated garage. During the winter, I usually give it a shot of ether to make starting easy. If I drive it often, which I have been in the past couple of weeks, it will start right up above 50 degrees. When its cooler weather, it usually takes a couple of trys. In the video you can see the driving shoes I wear to make my feet as small as possible. All of the gauges work as does the horn. The temp gauge shows the needle pegged in the lowest position. When the car was backed out of the garage it was stumbling because it was cold. The car runs great once warmed up. The S1 is a complete and utter blast to drive as long as you remember what you have and match your expectations to what ACBC built these to be.\r\n\r\nThe speed equipped flat-head can be a bit cranky ... it farts and snorts and makes all sorts of delightful sounds through 4-into-1 headers to an exhaust system with an expansion chamber with the evident sole intent of collecting partially burned hydrocarbons so as to make even more fun noises.\r\n\r\nI'll likely change out the rear end for a numerically lower ratio as I now find myself shifting into 2nd before crossing the intersection but 2nd and 3rd make for lively driving around town ... a highway cruiser she isn't.
