Yes, I too was disappointed to not find the original build tag but all other indications pointed to correct dating with the boot latch, windows, body numbers, hydro suspension, etc. The engine I suspect was a 1275GT South African variety due to the side oil filter and original red paint found under the layers of grease and black repaint done decades ago. This was my first mini experience and a great opportunity to get my son (at college now learning engineering) involved in the car hobby but have restored many other Mustangs, Corvettes, and other classics over the years. With unknown exact the way it left the factory history, we tried to keep mostly original and upgrade safety, HP, and performance to make it more enjoyable for street, track or show. Yes, it will keep up with traffic here in Texas but isn\u2019t geared to cruise at 75-85mph like modern cars. A great runabout and weekend warrior. Besides, you have to drive it like a motorcycle as there are way too many F-250s and 3500s around west Texas. If using the FE number for registering i would get a correct vin plate made up with that number reverse stamped on it, in some States two legible vin's are required.\r\nThe front seats look to be Austin America ones with the rear recovered to match.\r\nThe tie rod/lower control arm bolts are installed upside down, not a biggie but if the nut does come loose you loose the bolt as well.\r\nThe door fit pointed out is pretty close to as good as it gets with MK I's, yes you can get them almost perfect but it usually takes more time and effort than it is worth they were not perfect from the factory.\r\nThe Webasto sunroof is a nice addition and if you are a big guy i have found it helps make the Mini feel like a bigger car inside.\r\n@Red_Riley. \"Pretty sure that's not a MK I based on the full length rear window\". BTW, never order expensive glass from the U.K. as the companies won\u2019t insure them (learned the hard way). On the cloth top, the center handle does the latching and the two twist handles seal it tightly against the frame/top for added wind/weather seal. It works great as haven\u2019t notice any added wind noise when closed. The tie rods I believe were tapered as to fit in only one direction with lock nut but will double check that for you. More pics are coming and making their way through BaT (I guess?) as I submitted several last night. Yes , the doors are a PITA and from the pics I\u2019ve seen of early cars were not an uncommon fit like mine. Remember these cars were made en-mass in the U.K. in the 60s and QC wasn\u2019t that great. New hinges, door handles and weatherstrip were used and shut nicely with little effort. Ref my previous comment on the engine tag, it was already in place (with pic in the auction) under grease and grime, just not in typical U.K. stamping. During my research on the engine, there were multiple postings about whether reverse stamping was done at all of the factories throughout the world (remember this is most likely a SA engine) in all years of production, but I\u2019m not here to debate that whole issue. It should make a nice driver and the seller is upfront about what it is and isn't.\n\nI've never seen an FE number used as a VIN before, but someone got away with it and here it is. I've had quite a few VIN verifications done in Colorado, either at the local Colorado State Patrol barracks or, more commonly, through the police department where I live. My acquisitions are usually non-runners and the local police will come to my house and do the verification when they have time. The last time was about a year ago and I had three done at the same time. The only concern I would have with the FE number as a VIN is that it doesn't have a manufacturers name on the plate and some folks doing the verification may balk at that. I'm sure that some manufacturer used generic plates without their company name on them, but I don't recall ever seeing one. The suggestion made by @malsal to have a reproduction VIN plate made with the FE number stamped in it is exactly what I had in mind. Also, taking a vehicle back to the state it originally came from (CA to TX and back to CA in this case) won't necessarily guarantee a successful VIN verification. I've brought vehicles back into Colorado that were originally sold in Colorado and then retitled in other states. In discussion with the officers that did the VIN verification they don't care where it was originally titled, only that the current title matches the VIN plate. I'm not saying it would be a problem taking this Mini back to CA (please don't feel compelled to tell me that CA means Canada), just that it might not be a slam dunk. I would get the repop VIN plate with the FE number and lower the risk of a problem. Of course the great karma wheel in the sky would direct a Mini with the original VIN number to the same verifier the very next day and they would reject it because it should say FE on the VIN plate - \". . . just like the car I did yesterday.\"\n\nSomewhere I had documentation on the low-mount steering column locks but can't find it at the moment. I seem to recall a number of the Scandinavian countries requiring steering locks in this era, and, as already mentioned, Germany. There are three different styles of these column locks in the BMC parts manual but they don't specify what countries they were intended for.\n\n@ylocar8 - An automatic can be fitted by using the subframe with wider engine mounting points as mentioned by @Mayjer, but I have put them into standard Mini subframes by narrowing the transmission to engine mount bracket on the left side. It shifts the engine assembly slightly to the left, but that wasn't a problem. And a 1275 automatic from an AA works fine in a Mini performance-wise. The only real drawback is that highway cruising is limited by the 3.7 final drive ratio. That\u2019s when the can of worms start. The least problem is they\u2019ll blue tag to a state number and as a 1967. It all depends on the CHP verifier. If you plan on selling it to someone in California or other place, having a missing VIN plate could be a deal breaker.
