As far as the questions about the wheel sizes, I agree with everyone why go to the expense of adding steel flares if you don\u2019t upgrade to 5 lug wheels and bigger tires! That was my next plan but decided to stop where its at! I\u2019m only selling this beast because I got a chance to purchase a friends C6 Z06 and I cain\u2019t afford to keep both of them. If your looking at 914s your probably familiar with all the options up upgrading to 5 bolt lug conversions and adding bigger/wider Fuchs (15s, 16s etc.). The most cost effective safe way of upgrading the 5 lug conversion is through a package PM Performance offers costing about $798.00 plus some rear cores. The only question is rather this conversion will handle the torque of this engine, have to talk to the professionals at PMB. The best option would be to convert to a complete 911 suspension. There are lots of information on this on the 914 forum or Pelican forums. When most people upgrade to steel or fiberglass flares they usually upgrade to GT side Rocker Panels at the same time which flare out to match the flares on there ends. My body shop guy and me both loved the looks with the OEM rocker panels which were in excellent shape so we didn\u2019t change them out! One can purchase fiberglass GT rocker panels from Atlanta Parts or through EBay for about $200.00. To go with metal Gt panels usually people purchase 4 metal extensions (sold by a 914forum member) I think the cost is about $150.00 and have them welded on the existing rocker panels. They are 100% correct. This is a metal area below the battery tray down deep in the corner area! Can this be repaired? Of course it can if you have the ability and tools or know someone that does. This is usually caused by water or rainfall leaking in or coming through the grill area above the engine! In this case the Hell Hole is in very good condition which myself and my body shop inspected prior to starting the body work. The A/C actually brings this 914 closer to a modern day driver. Most 914 owners I\u2019ve spoke to that are driving in humid climates, would love to have A/C in there cars but due the cost to have a nice unit installed and the amount of drag it has on a stock 1.7-1.8 or 2.0 (4cyl) engines its really not practical! I wouldn\u2019t recommend a/c addition unless you have at least a 2056cc or 2270cc build or at least over 150 horsepower! That\u2019s just from my own personal experience. As far as I know Porsche/VW never put out a 914 from factory with factory a/c but it was a aftermarket dealer installation. True one can always remove the Targa top which is what a lot of people have resorted to that doesn\u2019t have the luxury of having A/C. But it\u2019s nice to have access to it within arms reach! For reasons unknown (suspected to be leftover residue in the rebuilt carbs caused a backfire) the drivers side carburetor caught fire while he was out driving. The carb fire was put out with an extinguisher. The car went back to the auto shop (Carl\u2019s Place in town) who replaced the carburetor, however for some reason the engine would not turn over when they reinstalled the carburetor. They ended up pulling the engine and replacing the cylinders and rings and rebuilt the carburetor again. As a result the car ran much smoother than before the engine fire. He noted it seamed to be more cold blooded and needed more time to warm up. He also constantly had problems with the Mallory Distributor that was installed by Raby Performance and highly recommended upgrading to a better ignition/distributor which I did by replacing it with a 123Ignition Bluetooth distributor. The fire did some surface damage to the top of the rear trunk area and the engine lid which was addressed and repaired during the body work. \n\nIf there is any doubt about the present condition of this engine you\u2019re welcome to speak to the Porsche specialist here in town who just recently tuned the engine and completed a leak down test. Solid body, steel GT fares, monster Type VI, etc. However I've come to the realization (with a few dope slaps from my wife...) that I the time has passed for this it be a car I would put to good use. My 73 914 2.0 sits way too much at this point, we tend to jump into the Boxster or Carrera. So I am now a \"chearleader\" for this car. \n\nFirst of all, the hell hole. I've had 914's since 1978 and IMHO this is just surface corrosion from nearly 50 years of non sealed batteries occupying the engine compartment. The proper Optima sealed battery is now in place as it should be. For further evidence, note the near perfect photo of the longitudinal and jack point on the passenger side. So to me nothing to be overly concerned about. \n\nNow, the build. Jake Raby may be a bit of a pompous a$$, however he builds a fantastic Type VI engine. With nearly double the power of the original 1.8, this really lights up the driving experience in a relatively economical way with no weight penalty of a 6 conversion. \n\nThe engine accessories are thousands of dollars of additional top shelf pieces, from the exhaust to the oil cooler to the suspension bits to the PMB brakes. Eric Shea at PMB is another 914 legend, and as mentioned, his 5 bolt conversion is highly recommended to complete this project. Eric is a great guy, was parked near him at the 2013 Parade concour.\n\nThe body - notwithstanding the surface corrosion in the battery area - strong evidence of a solid body with proper installation of real steel fenders. From what we can see in the photos, this was well done. Also, look at the reflection of the garage door opener on the hood. Very crisp, clean lines which typically indicate excellent surface prep and paint application. \n\nI would have never dreamed of installing heated seats and AC but I have to say those items are why we tend to jump into a more modern Porsche rather than our 914. Good call. \n\nSo overall this is a fantastic build that will be a great canyon carver, cars and coffee, and DE workhorse. And with the reserve hinted to be in the $20k range and $35k in receipts, dare I say a bargain? \n\nGLWTA!
