How I came to own it is an interesting story. While attending a Midwest university I landed a Summer internship at NASSCO, a shipyard in San Diego. Only issue was, myself and a fellow student only had motorcycles, no car. So we went out together in early May roughly along the old Route 66, him on his Honda Silver Wing, me on my BMW R60/5. Too many adventures on the trip out to relate here. \r\n\r\nFast forward four months or so and now the time to go back to school is approaching. I\u2019m on the BMW two blocks from where I\u2019m living and there\u2019s a VW Scirocco stopped not quite along the curb, asking directions from some guy watering his grass. He must have been told \u2018turn around\u2019 because he pulled a U turn right as I approached. T boned the driver\u2019s door. Front forks compressed all the way, rear tire came off the ground, etc with my helmeted head partially entering the open drivers\u2019 side window. Gotta love that bulletproof BMW construction and low airhead center of gravity. Forks and triple tree were tweaked but no other damage. Continued to ride it on I-5 to work in the damaged state \u2014 stark raving madness, I know. Wanted to keep the bike so convinced the shop that did the repair estimate to write an inflated value on the form so the insurance company wouldn\u2019t total it.\r\n\r\nBut how to get back to the Midwest? Started shopping for cars and found one of these, San Diego car, black plates, not a speck of rust. $500 or $600 I think. Took the bike apart, put everything except the engine and frame in the back seat, engine and frame went in the trunk with a bungee cord to hold the trunk lid down. Threw some air shocks on the rear so it would sit level and off I went. No AC so made the Yuma to Gila Bend part of the trip about 2 am. Lots of adventures (including radiator issues which resulted in me trading labor for a rodded -out core at a shop somewhere along the way). Very strange handling with all that weight out back \u2014 simple lane changes needed to be done very carefully, ask me how I know.\r\n\r\nThe rust free Fairlane 500 with the CA plates was a big hit in Michigan. I think I kept it for a year or so, until I graduated and \u2018got a real job\u2019. Mom wanted it out of the driveway so I told her \u201canything you can get for it over $1,000 is yours\u201d. \r\n\r\nNow mom was shrewd, rest her soul. One of those ladies that in olden times would have bitten the coin to make sure it was real gold. I think she got $1,300.
