I have had the good fortune and privilege to own several amazing automobiles. My approach has always been to restore them to the highest level and drive them. Life is too short. The 1961 Maserati 3500 GT being offered here is no exception. Scuderia Azzurra was entrusted to undertake a 2 year, no expense spared, frame off, rotisserie, nut and bolt restoration of a numbers matching Maserati Classiche-certified icon. For those of you steeped in Maserati lore, you know that Maserati was very successful at racing in the 1950\u2019s, often beating Ferrari, Aston Martin, Jaguar and Alfa Romeo, but was losing money hand over fist and in danger of going out of business. Taking a page out of Ferrari\u2019s playbook, Maserati saw the Gran Turismo, or Grand Touring, market as the key to its survival. The 3500 GT utilized an engine, the 350S, that was originally developed for racing. Several coachbuilders, including Touring and Allemano, were asked to provide prototypes for the 3500 GT, but Touring\u2019s version that utilized thin tubes and an aluminum skin (Superleggera, or Superlight construction) was chosen for the production version of the 3500 GT. The result was unveiled in March 1957 at the Salon International de l\u2019Auto in Geneva, Switzerland. The car was an instant hit; many celebrities, including Tony Curtis, Rock Hudson and Anthony Quinn, came into possession of a 3500 GT.\r\n\r\nThank you for your kind and heartfelt remarks regarding the car being offered here. In many ways, the images do not do the car justice. It is even more breathtaking when viewed in person.\r\n\r\nPlease allow me to respond to the questions raised in some of the comments.\r\n\r\nFirst, the air conditioner blows cold air. The air conditioner was installed in between the rear seats and the trunk. The air conditioner is hidden behind pleated panels that mimic what was installed in the trunk when the car left the factory. The two \u201cspeaker grills\u201d on the package shelf are actually intakes and the perforations in between the \u201cspeaker grills\u201d are where cold air enters the cabin. I have not driven the car on the hottest days, but the cabin has always been quite comfortable when the air conditioner is running.\r\n\r\nSecond, the scratch in the paint on the driver\u2019s side front quarter panel is almost impossible to see. I did not even realize that there was a scratch in the paint until the professional photographer showed it to me. In one of the comments the BaT member incorrectly identified the length of the scratch. The correct length of the scratch is 81 mm or 3.25 inches. In one of the images already posted, I am holding a ruler next to the scratch. The scratch is only visible when holding your head at a certain angle under certain lighting conditions. In most instances, the scratch is very difficult to discern. I encourage you to view the walk around video and the many images of the driver\u2019s side front quarter panel \u2013 you will likely not be able to see the scratch.\r\n\r\nThird, the sound heard in the driving video during shifting is most likely the result of me not engaging the clutch completely when shifting. The shifting is actually quite smooth.\r\n\r\nFourth, CPS pistons, from Italy, were used in the engine build.\r\n\r\nThank you for your comments. The motor is fine and sounds healthy and normal in the cold start video. The gearbox either has no oil or incorrect type (too thin) of an oil as it should not be as loud and mechanical of a driving noise and with shifting. The first and second syncros normally can be heard when cold but the noise will dissipate as it warms up which it doesn't in the video. The forth and fifth gear whine can be attributed to a worn carrier bearing on the layshaft and or just low on oil.
