I\u2019ve seen the front holes filled, properly finished, and earlier-style parking lights / turn signals installed, and the rear holes filled and properly finish, and the seam removed and properly finished. For me, that\u2019s arguably a good look and perhaps an improvement. I\u2019ve also seen the \u201clarger\u201d tubular bumpers tucked-in, and that improves their look too while still deferring to the more period-correct detail. I have an \u201982 2000, and constantly debate if I should modify the bumpers. Yet, nothing about their stock appearance keeps me from enjoying the look or driving experience of the car. With an 8.1:1 compression ratio and only about 82 HP, they earned a bit of a bad rap. My goal was not to build a racecar, but to bring this one back to life a bit and make a fun and reliable car to drive. The combination of the 1800 head and the domed pistons brings the CR up to around 9.4:1. That, combined with replacing the tiny stock carb, convoluted dual-plane intake manifold, and opening up the exhaust should have it back up to or better than the 2000's Euro spec of around 112 HP.\r\nThe things that were done were based on a lot of reading up on what others have said and done before to achieve the same goals. Upgraded the carb, as the stock carb was anemic and incredibly prone to vapor locking. At the time it was my daily driver, and I added at least 60K to the odometer driving back and forth every weekend from Atlanta to my parents home in Virginia. Amazingly, it never once left me stranded, despite the reputation these cars suffered from. I had to nurse it to destination a few times, but it never saw the back of a tow truck! \r\nI kept the stock bumpers on, but drilled into the fluid filled cylinders and tucked the bumpers in. It greatly improved the looks. IMHO, this one will look fantastic with the thin euro bumpers front and rear. I hope to be in this one at the end. The black paint is what was under the undercoating (I did not paint it), so presumably that is what is under the rest. Bare metal, then painted as needed to know if it is rusty or not and prevent future rust. Undercoating is only good IF it is seamless and unbroken, otherwise it just lets moisture in then holds it. The other problem with undercoating on any convertible is (and these are notorious for it) they let water in from above and the undercoating traps it nicely against the underside.
