Through my neglect, it fell apart in the mid-1990s at around 130k miles - speedo made a crunchy sound, heat stopped working, reverse stopped working, the headliner fell down. Lot of fun to cruise around in. My dad bought a new 81 DeVille D'Elegance as his first Cadillac of his retirement and, issues of the V8-6-4 aside, it was one beautiful land yacht.\r\n\r\nThe interior is exceptionally well kept - as interior trim is some of the most difficult parts to source a revival of this car to high-driver standards would not be too challenging.\r\n\r\nThe HT4100 engine raises some concern, particularly as it is low mileage and therefore may not have faced the issues of that engine as yet. The HT engine was Cadillac's last exclusive powerplant until the Blackwing engine introduced last year. It was introduced on the 1982 Cadillacs, hurried into production after being intended for use as a transverse mounted FWD engine in the new downsized Cadillacs slated for production in the mid-80s. It was re-engineered as a longitudinal replacement for the V8-6-4 when that engine failed to gain owner acceptance.\r\n\r\nThe issues with the HT arose from metallurgy problems of the aluminum block and iron heads. The failures included the aluminum oil pump, cam bearing displacements, weak aluminum block castings, and head bolts stripping out of the block. The intake manifold gasket would fail because of metallurgy conflict allowing coolant and oil to mix resulting in engine failures. The fix adopted by dealers was to replace the HT engine with an Oldsmobile 350 gas V8. Dealers selling used and new HT-equipped cars advised purchasers to buy the extended engine warranty being offered by Cadillac as the likely engine swap was very costly. Later versions of the HT, with larger displacement and better performance, supposedly solved some of the metallurgy issues and the engine remained in production until 1988.\r\n\r\nFrom the service records displayed it is difficult to tell whether any remedial work was done to avoid the HT engine faults common to the 1982-1985 cars. I hope so, as otherwise this is a very nice example of the 80's DeVille. One of the nicer colors for it as well. I also had my preconceived notions about these 4100 engines, mentioning to the owner how this was the one thing keeping the car from being a true collector's item already, but at least this one has been taken care of. This one is a true survivor, and a car that gives you that land yacht feel. I'd probably have bought it myself had I room for this behemoth!
