He was able to get assigned to a Toronado as his company car, one of the first to be released on the West Coast.\n\nHe took me along on one of his dealer visit trips and as part of that trip, we went from Bakersfield to Taft. The stretch of highway 119 for the last 50 miles into Taft is pretty bleak and barren - nothing but nothing to see for miles and miles.\n\nAt one point, my Dad looked over at me and asked me how fast we were going. There were virtually no landmarks to judge relative speed by, and the car was as solid and silent as a tomb. Eerie. I replied that I thought we were doing 70-75 mph. He told me that our actual speed was 93 mph. Just as he said that, he looked in the rear view mirror. I started to turn in my seat to look out the rear window and he said, \"Don't turn around. We have a CHP following us.\"\n\nMy Dad slowed down and pulled over, and the CHP walked up to the driver's side.\n \"Good afternoon, officer.\"\n \"Good afternoon. May I see your driver's license and vehicle registration?\"\n\" Certainly.\"\n\"Mr. Arcuri, do you know what the posted speed limit on this highway is?\"\n\"Yes, sir. 70 miles per hour.\"\n\"That's correct. Do you know how fast you were traveling?\"\n\"Oh, I'm sure it was close to 80.\"\n\"I clocked you at 95.\"\n\"Seriously?\"\n\"Yes. But that's not the reason I pulled you over. I stopped you because I have never seen one of these Toronados in the metal.\"\n\nThe CHP officer stepped back and admired the car. He walked to the front, then the back and returned to my Dad's open window.\n\n\"Mr. Arcuri, I am not going to cite you today for excessive speed. This is only a warning. Please proceed at the posted speed limit.\"\n\n\"Thank you, officer.\"\nI have several more Toronado stories. \n\nI never let my Dad forget this incident. He was a superb driver, normally very careful, and I watched him drive in winter snow conditions like a complete professional. In over 75 years of driving, he never had a single accident. He travelled for a living, and came from a family of automobile mechanics and dealers. He could fix anything. And, with seven children, he stressed cautious and sober driving habits.\n\nBut he just couldn't resist seeing what that new Toronado could do! When he retired, after 50+ years in the automotive business, having worked for the Nash, Oldsmobile, Toyota, and Volvo factory organizations, and having turned wrenches on everything from Pierce Arrows to Volkswagens, he declared the Oldsmobile Toronado one of the finest-engineered cars he had ever had the pleasure of driving. They got it right before they released it in 1966. And two years later, they ruined the iconic styling. Couldn't leave well enough alone. But a 66 Toronado stands out in my car life and stays with me. In the mid 70's while living on Cape Cod and already deep into my car hobby I befriended the owner of a classic era two bay mechanic / gas station in Wellfleet. One evening stopping by to BS he was excited to show me a '66 Toronado he'd just purchased from an elderly customer. It was essentially new and he insisted on taking me for a ride. We headed south onto the divided section of the mid-Cape highway and he ran it up to well over 100MPH. I was already running some very fast top end cars and I was blown away by the smoothness and stability, as I couldn't believe the speed we were registering. The unfortunate punch line is I stopped by shortly after to hear the car had caught fire and burned to the ground, reason unknown.\n\nI put this in my mind with the context of my engineer Dad's loyalty to Saabs from the 50's through the early 70's. Front wheel drive was a total freak in the car market and with an engineer dad and my own obsession I was fascinated. Citroen, Saab, et al were already out there but where the heck did the monster GM Toronado and Eldorado come from? 425 to 500 cubes with autobahn suspensions? I'm still puzzled how that happened.\n\nSo compare this auction with one a few listings away known as a Sonett. My older brother drove one new from 1970 that he traded for his '74 99 EMS. I learned to drive and did my license test in a '69 96. The relationship to GM is uncanny. If I was an unlimited collector I would have some 60's Saabs paired to 60's Toro/Eldos and tell folks how front wheel drive was an alien invention before it became common. The best way to remove the glare and insane shine cars like this give off with their long flat body panels. Same reason you can see through the glass etc and its not just one big mirror! \r\n\r\nCPL Filter is VERY useful tool to show accurate paint color etc. Works the same way polarized sunglasses work, just that its \"adjustable\". We always strive to use manual optical means of capturing images as opposed to \"digital editing\" of photos as that can lead down the rabbit hole of a car looking \"too good\" as you say, or having a car be misrepresented. We will adjust Exposure (brightness), and temperature (blue vs orange huh) on our photos and that's really about it. \r\n\r\nHappy to take any additional videos for anyone to verify condition. At the time in 2008 I was an \"old car newbie\". It was between the '61 Continental and the '66 Toronado. I found this one first in the hands of a gentleman who had just restored a Dobonnet on White vinyl. He bought this one planning to restore but instead sold it to me. I did (paid for) a frame-on restoration. One of the front fenders had been buckled under. I found a white fender on a 1966 at French Lake Auto Parts. It was stripped, refit (easily) and painted at the same time as the rest of the car. If I recall correctly the fender may have been off the more deluxe model and had a cornering lens which we filled. I don't know if this explains the badge location but it would've gone back on where it came off (studs on the badge I believe). Personally I never found the brake fade to be troublesome. The long nose required the most planning for parking. But cruising at 75mph with the windows down was no problem. Nice and quiet. The length of the windows puts the turbulence behind your head (no B pillars!). The best was getting looks from so many who had no idea what they just saw. The exhaust note is lovely. Details matter! )\n\nAs it happens, my Dad had a beautiful, metallic gold 1966 Toronado as his company car in the year in the year I learned to drive. He was a firm believer in rigorous driver training, not this mamby-pamby commercial stuff kids get nowadays. This included many hours behind the wheel in as many varied road and weather conditions as possible. Panic stops. And parallel parking.\n\nOne Saturday morning we agreed on one of these training sessions. Our route would take us down the Norwegian Grade from Thousand Oaks, through Moorpark on highway 118, and down the infamous Grimes Canyon (!) in its all pre-improved glory and menace. To say I was nervous is an understatement. We would undertake this grueling session in a brand spanking new Toronado. Owned by General Motors.\n\nOff we went. Heading down the twisting Norwegian Grade, I proceeded with great caution, knowing I was in command of a two-ton+ car with nearly 400 horsepower. The road straightened and we spent the next several miles just cruising through the Santa Rosa Valley and the then-tiny farming community of Moorpark.\n\nThe road north out of Moorpark headed for Fillmore climbs steeply while winding its way to the crest of the mountains separating the two valleys. Near the top, you begin to have that sense you get when the roller coaster is almost at the first summit out of the starting platform. Queasy. I had been over this road a few times before, but never as the pilot of the vehicle.\n\nDownward we plunged into the first turn. My Dad was silent, but very aware. The curves on Grimes Canyon are bordered one side by tall sandstone cliffs, and sheer drops on the other. Many of the corners are totally blind. Rock slides are frequent. The road surface can be sandy. The road itself is one way in each direction, and back then, very narrow. Posted speed limits were no joke. Exceed them at your peril.\n\nNow, let's talk about 1966 Toronado braking. No. Let's not.\n\nI made it through several corners OK, but I had the feeling that things could easily get out of control. No sooner had that thought flashed through my mind than we headed into a blind corner, and we were traveling a wee bit faster than my abilities. As we neared the peak of the turn, I realized that I was slightly over the double yellow line when a Porsche 911 appeared in the other lane - over the double yellow - going hell-bent-for-election uphill in the opposite direction.\n\nMy ( brief ) life flashed before my eyes and I froze, instantly realizing that I was simultaneously going to be responsible for possibly three gruesome deaths, the complete obliteration of a new Porsche, and some very ugly damage to a vehicle my father did not own. Oh, joy.\n\nFortunately, my Dad, master of automotive situational awareness, was unfazed. Assessing our predicament, he intuitively reached across the car and, deftly tweaking the steering wheel to the right for just a split second, saved our bacon. The Toronado responded to his input with nary a complaint, and restored its line on the road with perfect grace. I never even had time to think about braking. Which probably was a good thing.\n\nWe continued our driving lesson, my father acting as if nothing had happened. It was only when I got home that it occurred to me to wonder about how the Porsche driver felt. Thought to be \u201cThe Red One\u201d, specially ordered in a Cutlass red, my father, brother and I restored it. Took years, but finally it was completed. That summer, Omaha hosted the National Oldsmobile Meet, and we drove the car from Phoenix to Omaha. I was a teenager. We accidentally unhooked the speedometer, as we, uh, may have not wanted the miles on the car. \r\n\r\n*cough, cough* \r\n\r\nAnyway, we took all backroads and county highways because we had no idea of our speed. This amazing car just wanted to cruise. Faster and faster. Because of how effortlessly this car drove, our speed was unintentionally, subliminally, creeping up, faster and faster. One night, it started raining. Well, let me bare witness that those inop wipers are cosmetic. Trust me, if you go fast enough, the rain does not hit the windshield. \r\n\r\nClose to Omaha, our speedometer decided to work again. Ahem . . . \r\n\r\nAnyway, driving the last few miles at what became our normal, shall-we-say qualitatively derived speed, our best estimated cruising speed was easily over 100 mph. \r\n\r\nI\u2019ve seen comments referring this car as a muscle car or cruising car. But if you drive it like it was meant to be driven in 1966, you should not have a problem. Also I believe modern radial tires will improve its braking performance somewhat. I say this because the cheap junkyard tires I used definitely reduced its braking performance. That said, a conversion to front disc brakes would be a great upgrade, and would still keep the car pure.\r\n\r\nNot sure I would go with a period 1967 disc brake system. As a GM dealer mechanic from the mid 70's to 1980's I was not impressed with the early GM's disc brakes.\r\n\r\nOn an another note I am thrilled that this car and others like it survived. Oh there were others, like the magnificent Imperial Crown Coupe and Eldorado. But these were king. I owned a couple myself. The first was a 66, with over 150,000 miles on it! The car was in presentable condition but was after all 18 years old at the time, plus the owner, a good friend of my Dad, had a son my age who beat on that car with me in it. But I needed cheap trans and had a reasonable source for regular gas, that made me retard the timing so the car would not ping, but it did Rob some power. On days I wanted full power I would splurge for premium gas and turn the distributor back. But that car was amazing, especially in snow and rain! But it all came to an end when the main drive chain broke, leaving me stranded a few miles from home. The guy in the tow truck towed it to his yard, then paid me $100 for the car, with no charge for the tow. He wanted that 425 for a Cutlass he was building. The second a 1971, with another premium gas 425, had half the mileage but not as well cared for. The interior was very nice black vinyl and everything worked, but I had a cheap red paint job done at Maaco, that actually looked great! I also needed rear springs and shocks, so I added MOOG CargoCoils and the biggest Monroe shocks I could find, then I tweaked the front torsion bars and added matched shocks to the front. Wow talk about a great ride! Plus very deep! Soaking up huge bumps like they weren\u2019t even there! Plus absolutely unstoppable in the snow! I remember one time during a heavy blizzard in New England, a neighbor had used a snow blower almost all night so he could get out in the early hours to go plow. But he blew most of the snow all over MY CAR! I came out to go to work and between him and the city plows I had to shovel my way into my car just to start it! I let it warm up for a couple minutes, then leaving all the snow all over the car for extra weight I backed up as far as I could before touching the car buried behind me so the front wheel drive was on a few feet of bare asphalt that was underneath, then I turned the wheel to the left just enough to get around the car buried in front and floored it! I must have looked like an avalanche moving on flat ground as I plowed through at least three feet of snow, covered with a foot of snow all on top. At the end of the street I just stood on the brakes and all the snow on the roof and hood slid off, then I plowed through that. After I made the turn onto the Main Street I floored it again to clean off the rear, then pulled into the coffee shop to clear the rest off. I was the only one to get to work who didn\u2019t own a 4x4 truck. I did have a complete set of Firestone Town&Country Snow tires all around in the largest size I could get to fit on. That car ran for a few years trouble free. The dealer's service staff had a pretty good idea of what was wrong with the car, but they wanted the big guns present when the broke what they expected to be the inevitable bad news to the somewhat agitated owner.\n\nMy father arrived at the dealer's shop having first talked to the service manager and having had him arrange to have the owner present for the disposition of the case. Arriving early (forewarned is forearmed ) my Dad asked to see the car. The mechanic had already dropped the engine oil pan, having suspected that they would find the answer there, and my father confirmed their suspicions. He also confirmed that the owner was determined to have Oldsmobile pay for the repair.\n\nSoon the owner arrived and the entourage headed for the service bay where his Toronado was parked. Exhibit A, the oil pan, rested on a wheeled mechanics table in front of the car.\n\nMy father introduced himself and politely began to question the owner.\n\n\"Mr. Smith, we have looked carefully at your car. I must tell you, Oldsmobile has no other reported instances of a seized engine in a Toronado. These are exceptionally robust engines. Can you tell me when you last changed the oil in the car.\"\n\nMr. Smith: \"I don't remember exactly, but it wasn't that long ago,\"\n\nMr. Arcuri: \"You know, looking at the inside of the engine, I am having a hard time with what you have told me. Can I show something to you?\"\n\nMr. Arcuri and Mr. Smith step over to the mechanic's table, and my Dad picks up the oil pan and turns it so that Mr. Smith can see the inside, which contains almost no liquid oil, but two inches of sludge on the bottom of the entire pan.\n\nMr. Arcuri: \"Now, Mr. Smith, the mechanic here said that the first thing he did when he started to work on your cat was to check the oil dipstick. He found no evidence of oil in the engine. He then put the car up on the lift and removed the oil pan drain plug. Nothing came out of the pan. That's when the service manager gave me a call to come look at the car.\"\n\n\"Can you tell me if you have any records of ever having changed the oil in your Toronado?\"\n\nMr. Smith: \"No. I don't keep formal records on such things. These were to be temporary. The original (now rebuilt) canisters should be with the car and the new owner can get it back to even \u201cmore original\u201d. The radio did not work when I bought it in 2008. I wanted to keep the original radio but never managed to find a shop to work on it.
