Finally class was over, I blasted off to Walnut Creek (I think) to see my future Allard! \n\nMan was I disappointed! No cycle wings! No Cadillac engine with three twos, in fact no engine at all! The car was a complete disaster, parts, that is the parts that were left, were strewn all over the garage floor. But it was the shape of the body which disappointed me the most. I don't know if it was an Allard like this one or whether it was a Palm Beach, but it wasn't what I was expecting. No hairy bulging body, just a smooth, and to my eyes at the time, not very interesting early fifties envelope body. I passed on the Allard of course. But I now look at this one and realize that I was a fool to not have realized what cool cars these later Allards were in their own right. I often wondered what became of that Allard. Hopefully it ended up in the right hands and received the restoration that it deserved. The DeDion rear suspension would be much better than my live axle. Not sure if the tranny is original but I doubt it. There was a J2 at Monterey this year that had one installed by GM when they were developing the Corvette, it's documented, but almost all of them were LeSalle three speeds. Allard, which was in England, shipped the cars over without engines or transmissions and the dealers installed what the customer wanted, which was usually a Caddy 331 with the three speed. My car was sold by the same dealership, and was spec'd with a DeSoto Firedome, but they put a Caddy in instead.\n\nAs for the front axle, it's always exciting. In the fifties, the other racers would stay clear of the Allards in the braking zone cause you never knew which side they'd pull to. Mine will squirm left and right a little each time, even with the steering rebuilt and all the bushings tight. I have some experience driving Cadillacs with Hydramatic because my father owned about a half dozen of them beginning with model year 1949 through about 1961, and I drove all of them. \n\nThe Hydramatic is a very smooth transmission, and very advanced for the time, with 4 forward speeds. But even with 4 speeds it isn't what we would think of as a performance transmission. 1st was a very low gear that did little more than get the big Caddy moving, and gear changes were very slow and deliberate and hydraulically determined, not electrically determined as in transmissions today. This suited large luxury cars back then but probably would not suit performance cars for most people because gear changes are slow and the ratios are widely spaced. And 1st gear doesn't take you far. \n\nMy point is, although this K3 has the 331 Caddy engine with 4 barrel and will have no trouble going down the road, it probably drives more like a cruiser than what we think of today as a performance car. Maybe the seller could comment on this.\n\nThe one J2 I drove had the 3-speed Cad/Lasalle standard transmission and was definitely a performance car for that era. \n\nIIRC, somewhere in the comments below someone mentioned the possibility this car has a GM Powerglide auto transmission. These were installed as an option in Chevys beginning in 1950 and are limited by being a 2-speed.
