I mean, $500 cars at times. I passed on an Electra--the largest of this style, a ways back and the guy just wanted $500 and know it went to a good home. I didn't have the room otherwise I would have gotten it. \n\nThis is the big brother to my dad's car, he acquired a 1966 LeSabre brand new. Same exact body, but without things like rear window defog, an even more basic vinyl interior, and power was via a 340 Cubic Inch (named the Wildcat 350) with 2 barrel carb. My dad finally sold that car in 1982 to a woman down at work (who then wrecked it). I remember the dealer telling my dad \"it will take a bit of time to get the car ready, have dinner on us at the restaurant down the street\". Of course, the car they lent us was a Wildcat convertible...sneaky dealer! But my dad would have nothing of the upsell tactic...\n\nThese cars, even the more basic LeSabre, were very comfortable on the highways. The backseat was an important reason my dad got this over the Skylark which he intended to buy---plenty of room for the kids or even adults. Plus, my dad could not wear a hat in the Skylark. We went cross country a few times and the car would just purr right along. It was just a two-speed (with vane-type technology) so it was fun winding the thing out in first gear until like 50 mph! We put 150k on that original engine, not even a valve job done. For some crazy reason, my dad let me rebuild the carb myself, I just followed the massive shop manual and the carb kit. If you can believe this, at 13, I actually got the thing back together and it worked!\n\nMy sister inherited the car, and when we moved to San Diego she continued to drive it, with rust holes in the area below the trunk as shown in the video, but I mean HOLES! She parked it one time at work and did not have it all the way in gear. When she came out, the car was gone. She called my dad and we were going to call the police for theft when I spotted the car about a a hundred yards away! It had rolled down out of the parking lot, across a street, jumped the curb, and went down a forested hillside coming to rest at a bank. We had to get a tow truck with one of those cables and pull it out. It missed all the trees and had one little dent in it. I guess I had never really looked inside of one, because when I sat down behind the wheel I was sorely disappointed. It just looked so pedestrian. I had been expecting something a bit more upscale or flashy in terms of interior appointments... perhaps more along the lines of the Grand Prix or the Olds Starfire. I knew right away I didn't want it, and I'd like to report that the inspection ended there, but he gave me the keys and I was still at that age when I absolutely had to drive anything and everything automotive that had ever been built, so off I went. No surprises... smooth, torquey and steered the beast with one finger. A few minutes later I brought it back and crossed another car off the list in my mind. \n\nLooking at this example now, that dashboard doesn't look so pedestrian anymore. This is the last of the era, before laws dictating dashboard and interior safety sort of killed the freedom designers and stylists had in forming the driving experience. Beautiful car, but if one really wants the full 60's, jet-age driving adventure, sport-barges really should have a console and a little more flash. It was pale yellow, with burn-your-butt black vinyl seats. My brother and I would stay with my aunt during the day in the summertime, and once a week or so my uncle would take us and our three cousins in the Wildcat on little day trips around Richmond. I was about nine or ten, and my brother and cousins were all at least two years younger than me. Since there were five of us riding around in the backseat, and it was the late 1960s, there was no wearing of seatbelts. Pssh. Safety be damned. \n\nMy cousins thought it was hilarious when my uncle would set the excess speed indicator to about 60 and periodically go over that, setting off the buzzer. For the first few times, my brother and I didn't know what the buzzing was about, and everyone had a laugh at our expense. \n\nThe fun times in the Wildcat came to an abrupt end, though, when my aunt got sideways in a thunderstorm and wrapped it sideways around a bridge abutment. For '66 they adopted what seemed to be a trend within GM at that time with a slab-like design that had a bit of a concave shape and used the typical GM horizontal strip speedometer of that era. It has somewhat less character but may be more functional and possibly better-accepted by buyers.
