I bought the car after selling a low mileage, black on tan '87 328 here on BaT in 2018. I used the proceeds of that sale to buy this car and an '88 Mondial 3.2. The acquisition of two Ferraris after selling one, seemed like a great idea until the first time I drove this 328, it dropped all of its coolant, overheating the engine to a troubling degree... thus warranting the recommendation to rebuild the engine. That was a painful and expensive pill to swallow. \r\n\r\nThat said, I bought it for three reasons: 1) I was able to pay a price commensurate with its mileage and lack of service history, and then commission all of the service needed to bring the car up to my standards. 2) the rare color combo (not rosso corsa!) and 3) its mileage would afford me no-guilt driving whenever I felt the desire to take it out. On my previous 328, that had only 13,800 miles when I bought it, I always felt guilty about driving it, but I wanted to drive it all of the time. I bought this silver car to be a driver. I didn't want anything out of it, except a classic Ferrari that I could enjoy on the road. Then potential engine damage occurred, and the car was in the shop for 3 years #fail. \r\nThe duration of the rebuild was greatly exacerbated by COVID. The machine shop that needed to look over the block, was closed for almost five months during the height of COVID-mania.... and of course the shop re-opened to a huge backlog of work. Interestingly, the machine shop found little or no bore damage, no bent rods or warped piston heads... or anything really insidious... But better safe than sorry.... Obviously the engine was completely torn down and rebuilt, and I naturally went ahead and commissioned all elements of a typical 5 year major service including new cam belts and tensioners. I didn't pick it up post rebuild until May of 2023. Since then, the car has been incredible. It pulls harder than my pristine former 328 with low mileage - a true testament to the belief that a few miles can keep a car running better than sitting in a garage. I hate to sell it, but the rebuild expense which totaled around $23k basically knocked me on my butt just as two of my kids were starting college. Ouch. So I am selling it now, to pay for some tuition. Painful but true.... my loss can be your gain. The owner is a well-known Italian car enthusiast and collector here in Central VA and i wouldn\u2019t hesitate to buy a car from him. I wish the timing was better for me, as i absolutely would love parking this particular car in my garage.\nCouple notes: cosmetically, the car is a driver. Paint is a little better than a 5-footer, but not going to win you the Cavallino Classic. Most flaws are noted in pics - there is also some slight bubbling around passenger side door handle that is probably a paint prep issue, not rust. I suspect most if not all of the car has been painted, though paint match is really good if blended. Panel fit and gaps good for an 80s Ferrari. Didn\u2019t get it on a lift but no obvious signs of an accident in my opinion.\n\nInterior, other than the noted seat bolster issue, is really presentable\u2026dash is nice, carpets could stand a steam clean. All aux stuff that i tried works (headlights, turn signals, etc). Did not try heat or AC, but owner said AC blows super cold. Nice car cover and full tool kit included, the tonneau cover in the rear hatch is in good shape. Missing original gas cap.\n\nRebuild was done by a well-known shop here in Richmond, and feels stout. Mechanically - it goes like stink. Absolutely one of the stronger 3.2s I\u2019ve driven. These cars have a rep for being \u2018slow\u2019 but this one does not feel like it, with the flat-plane crank V8 singing that intoxicating siren song right behind your ear. I wanted to write a check right there in that moment (before remembering my lack of garage space). Idles smoothly. Driven in a spirited fashion for roughly 15 minutes with no cooling issues, warning lights or oil pressure issues. Weather was roughly 50 degrees.\n\nShifts great, with none of that balky 2nd gear these cars can be known for (car was warm, though). Clutch feels like it has lots of life left, brakes are strong though require a bit of pedal travel before really engaging. Had just gotten out of my E30 M3 before driving this 328 so perhaps they all feel like that and i was just accustomed to more \u2018bitey\u2019 brakes. Targa top a bit rattly over rough pavement\u2026but they all are. Wish i had taken it off so i could\u2019ve really experienced open top driving in this screamer.\n\n @bigswole you might be right about a tiny exhaust leak, but the car sounds so good that i couldn\u2019t care less. +1 on this incredible (and quite uncommon) color combo. This is the rarest of horses\u2026a non-red, higher mileage, driver Ferrari that you can happily pack the miles and stone chips on with nary a care in the world\u2026plus some pretty expensive stuff was just done so you don\u2019t have to. RVA is small as cities go (something like the 40th largest city in US) but we have some nice advantages as vintage car ownership goes. Our winters are mild and we have some incredible driving roads both east and west of us (Skyline Drive and Blue Ridge to the west, Rt 5 towards Williamsburg to the east), no emissions testing, antique tags for cars over 25 years old require no yearly property tax or inspection, good German/British vintage car mechanics, and a gorgeous, and of course a historic city full of beautiful architecture with one of the nation\u2019s best food scenes and incredible rural areas just outside the city. Cars and Coffee every Saturday AM brings out hundreds of interesting cars of all genres, and VIR (one of the nation\u2019s best racetracks) is a pretty short drive away. The one drawback I\u2019ve found is that for really exotic stuff (particularly stuff made after the 1990s), technical know how is a bit thin on the ground\u2026one of the reasons i sold my Aston but keep my vintage Porsche and BMW.
