The car still looks great!\r\nAs to the chassis; I'm pretty sure I got the car with a replacement chassis already in place. It is not at all unusual for an Elan to have a different chassis from when it left the factory. My own S1 Elan is on it's third chassis. There is a reason (actually many reasons) why the whole car weighs less that 1500 lbs. The chassis is just sheet metal folded and welded into a very neat, efficient, solid but fragile structure. I can still pick up a bare chassis by myself. The factory chassis is terrific when it is brand new but if you get a little moisture near it with only the red oxide primer on it, you will soon have rust. Once the rust starts the chassis can be very difficult to repair because you just blow holes through the thin and Swiss cheesy metal.\r\n\r\nWe took the time to sand blast this chassis and reinforce it in many areas before paint. If I recall correctly, I primed this chassis and then painted it with a catalyzed epoxy paint. First, I wanted to thank Bob Herzog @Lotuszog for all his help in confirming the history of the car and providing guidance here and there when we had questions about the restoration, etc. He has been exceptionally gracious and helpful over the last several weeks. Just as importantly, it is always great to learn a car you are representing was restored by someone with a great deal of respect within the enthusiast community. We also wanted the thank @Bronco for taking the time to fill in the additional history back to just after the car was imported into the US in the 1970\u2019s. \r\n\r\nThe owner of this car is a great guy and a diehard British enthusiast with a stunning E-Type Jag and a Lotus race car or two, among other toys. The owner purchased the car from Bob soon after the restoration was completed and the car has only traveled about 2500 miles during the last 11 years, so while some time has passed, the restoration has had very few miles and it shows. While the owner is a racer and competes in Historic races, including the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, he mentioned this car has never been on a track.\r\n\r\nWe did our best to document the condition of the car through the photos, but we wanted to provide some additional details. The car really is in fantastic condition, and shows beautifully. \r\n\r\nThere are some imperfections in the body and paint, such as some spider webbing around one of the lift the dot posts and there is a small stress crack which appears to be associated with the drivers side hood hinge (pictures attached). There are some paint chips and scrapes in the door jamb areas which are clearly pictured and the passenger door hinge has some play. With that said, the paint is in great condition with a lot of shine and shows beautifully!\r\n\r\nThe car drips some oil which appears to be coming from the area where the engine and transmission meet and the e-brake does not function. I am told these are common issues on these cars, so take it for what that is worth. \r\n\r\nThe interior is in exceptional condition and looks virtually new. The wood dash is beautifully finished and the wood wheel is as well. The manual pump for the windshield washer fluid is not installed on the back of the wiper switch. We found it loose and removed it due to a poor crimp. The pump will be included if someone would like to re-install it. The soft top and tonneau cover appear in excellent, if not new condition and as can seen in the photos, they look and fit great. \r\n \r\nOverall, the car appears to be very close to the condition it was when it left Bob\u2019s shop after the restoration. The stock brace is just a U channel welded across the bottom of the frame. It is just for support but there is always one Bozo who tries to use it to jack up the car. It gets bent easily and looks UGLY. I cut off the original brace and put the removable brace on there because it is stronger, it looks nice and it's replaceable if you encounter another Bozo. \r\nI welded a steel plate across the bottom of the front crossmember. You can jack up the whole car anywhere on that crossmember now. Here is a copy. \r\nFor Sale: 1965 Lotus Elan Series 2 Drop Head Coupe (Convertible) Right Hand Drive.\r\n Body off restoration just completed. Everything on this car has been totally torn down, sandblasted, painted and rebuilt or replaced with new parts. Beautiful, fresh Lotus Ardent Red paint job with silver bumpers and silver wheels with chromed 3 eared knock off spinners make it really pop. All new interior done up right in the original style including rebuilt seats, vinyl door panels, wood dash and an original styled, Brand New Wood Steering Wheel! It is a real classic and a real head turner.\r\n\r\nDetails: I do most of the work myself including the bodywork, but I farm out some of the specialty stuff (engine machine shop work, final paint & seat upholstery) to the pros. \r\n Engine rebuilt with new rings, seals, gaskets & bearings. Engine block & head hot tanked. Block was line bored. Crank polished. New valve job with all new guides, valve seats and cam followers. Head & block surface milled for straightness. Water pump rebuilt. New connecting rod pin bushings. Pistons bead blasted and skirts Teflon coated. Machine shop work done by Apex engineering in Bensenville. New engine mounts. Steel header was in good shape. I just sandblasted and painted it. The new exhaust pipe is mated to a brand new Tony Thompson large bore Stainless Steel, stock styled muffler. Looks beautiful and sounds great (Not loud and not cheap!) New gear reduction starter. Weber 40 DCOE carbs cleaned and rebuilt. New air box trunking hose hooked up to rebuilt original stock air filter set up. \r\n Transmission was in good shape. I tore it down for a good cleaning and just replaced the seals, gaskets and front main bearing. Shift forks and syncros were good. Shifts great. Nothing shifts better than an early Elan!\r\n Rear end disassembled, cleaned & checked. New seals and gasket installed.\r\n Stainless braided brake hose lines. Stainless braided clutch line. Stainless braided oil pressure line. Rebuilt brake master cylinder & clutch cylinder. Rebuilt calipers with new Stainless Steel pistons. New front and rear brake rotors. Gas tank was rebuilt by Renu - guaranteed for life. Original steel knock off wheels sandblasted and painted silver. New 175/70/13 Sumitomo tires. 3-eared knock off spinners were rebuilt and re-chromed. New battery. New radiator core. Heater core boiled out & tested. Fuel pump rebuilt. Steering rack rebuilt. New sliding spline rear axels from Tony Thompson. No rubber donuts!\r\n New wiring harness. New battery under the original styled battery box behind the passenger seat with an easy access, quick battery shut off switch. Gauges all cleaned up and function well. Generator and regulator professionally rebuilt.\r\n Chassis. This car had a Lotus replacement chassis installed somewhere in a previous life. It has extra welded supports in the proper recommended areas and it was powder coated black. It was in real good shape when I got it so I cleaned it up, checked it for straightness and put some touch up paint on some areas that were scuffed or chipped. No rusty bits anywhere on it. I did install an extra steel plate across the bottom of the front cross member with a large u-bolt tow hook to make things easier when you want to jack it up or put it on a trailer. I also installed a removable steel tube cross brace. I sandblasted and painted all the suspension pieces and installed all new bushings and rubbers everywhere. New closed cell foam chassis pad between the chassis and the body. New tie rod ends. Trunions rebuilt. New rear Spax shocks. Good used Koni\u2019s in front. Rear springs and perches are slightly smaller overall diameter to allow for slightly wider tire clearance. Front shocks & springs sandblasted and painted. \r\n Body and Paint - I did all the body work. Body was sanded down to bare fiberglass. All stress cracks repaired with fiberglass. Body was flipped upside down and the undersides and wheel well areas were completely sanded down and redone. My buddy owns a fiberglass shop so he made sure all the glass work was done right. We retained the stock fender shape - No fender flares. Entire body shot with 2 part primer and block sanded multiple times. Final Ditzler base coat/clear coat paint job was done by Rizza Autobody in Des Plaines. Color is a gorgeous Lotus Ardent red. Bumpers painted silver as were the steel wheels. All new chrome done by Star chrome in Chicago. Door handles, trunk hinges, window channels, etc. They even rebuilt and re-chromed the 3 ear\u2019d knock off spinners for the wheels. $1200 in chrome! Windshield frame done in proper black has new stainless steel tension rod and new gasket. Windshield is in good shape with a few minor scratches. \r\n New Original styled wood steering wheel is amazing. \r\n Interior is gorgeous and looks as new. New veneered teak wood dash finished with 6 coats of hand sanded automotive clear coat \u2013 looks great! Original crash pad in nice shape, repainted with vinyl paint. New stock style door panels and side panels with new vinyl covering. New arm rests with the proper padding and pattern from Famous Frank. Seats rebuilt with all new foam padding with original style black vinyl but better quality than new. They look and feel great! New original style stock black rubber \u201cknubby\u201d floor covering \u2013 not fuzzy carpeting. Set over new insulation. New seat belts. Even new stock ash trays! New teardrop wood shift knob. New door glass channels and window brush strips. \r\n New Robbins convertible top and new Robbins tonneau top. Convertible top cant rails were rebuilt with new rubber and painted. Car comes with an original jack. I spent a lot of money on this car to make it very nice. Even the stainless steel windshield wiper blades cost $47 each! \r\nI have a lot of real old receipts that came with the car including some from England. I also have all the new receipts\u2026. And there is a LOT of them!\r\n The car looks great, sounds great and runs great. The steering is tight; engine power and brakes are very good. The car is zippy and handles great. It\u2019s a real joy to drive. Just like a new 1965 Lotus Elan which is what this essentially is. \r\n Although everything that could have been done, has been done to this car to make it like new and in some cases better than new, it is still is a 46 year old car with only the reliability you would have gotten 46 years ago. So it is being sold as-is with no expressed guarantee or warrantee except that I will provide full technical and moral support for however long as you own the car.
