I've owned a Citrus Yellow 2000 5-speed for 7 years and plan to pass it on to my grandkids. I replaced the IMA battery early on and when it started losing power a couple of years ago I switched to a Lithium Ion battery from a gen 3 Insight. There's a fellow on the wonderful InsightCentral forum who developed the necessary hardware/software enabling one to ditch the NiMH batteries. The Lithium battery and a 40% currant hack (also available through the forum) reportedly increases the performance noticeably, but not drastically. I typically got high 60s mpg around town with the old battery. The car runs fine with the IMA system shut off but you miss the extra 23 foot pounds the IMA provides. BTW, my 6'4\" son was able to drive the car on a 2200 mile road trip. The car averaged 67mpg on the way there and 68mpg coming home. I was surprised it did that well considering the number of hills on that trip. When the new BumbleBee battery was installed in 2022, the lifetime MPG was right at 50.0. So it has improved somewhat in the past two years. I don't track my mileage around town, but probably average between 55 and 60 mpg.\r\n\r\nI have not used the grid charger on the new battery. If I kept the Insight, I would probably wait another year or two before I started using it again.
