The 74 Cherokee was not only the first year of the model, it was the first vehicle branded an SUV. That marketing decision, along with being able to persuade youthful buyers that this was a different vehicle than the Wagoneer (same wheelbase, same drivetrain, just two less doors) created a whole new market segment. That new category would evolve into what kept jeep in business with the redesigned XJ. Now virtually all other makes even Jaguar, Porsche and even Lamborghini have succumbed to the SUV\u2019s popularity. It\u2019s ironic that the same feature that brought popularity to the Cherokee in the 70\u2019s, it\u2019s \u201cSporty\u201d 2 doors, deters people that are willing to pay two or three times the price for a Wagoneer. These are fun to drive, hold their own on the trail, and are a historically significant vehicles. And as much as I like the Wide-Track Cherokees, they loose some of the Brooke Steven\u2019s styling that the Narrow-Tacks have. Not to mention the Narrow-Tracks are starting to become one of the more difficult FSJ\u2019s to get. They certainly don\u2019t come along everyday, and when they do, they usually need a lot of work. This particular offering is more of a gem than people seem to have noticed. Personally, I\u2019d drop the tire size to 33\u2019s, but other than that I\u2019d just enjoy this as is.
