I can not verify. I can attest that I have driven this vehicle regularly and that the tell-tale click and whine of the plastic tensioner wearing is not present in either normal or spirited driving. We received the vehicle with a fresh oil change and we had it serviced this week. We can try to run a compression check this week. This vehicle is significantly newer than most of what we enjoy so it will will be dependent on our (outsource) mechanic..... unless the plastic engine covers prove easier to remove than a XK 120 air cleaner :). \n\n@iamZardoz. That's part of why I bought it. I think that in the last 20 years, this is one of the few iconic British cars that will last. The ragtops are a dime. Dozen and most all beaten to pot. In addition to the chain tensioner concern, this vintage of the 4 liter V8 was initially produced with a nikasil cylinder lining which sometimes experienced excessive and premature wear when exposed to high sulfur content gasoline resulting loss of compression. Based on my reading on various Jaguar forums (no personal experience) a number of engines were replaced by Jaguar because of this. However, it also seems the consensus of these forums is if no problems were experienced prior to the mid 2000's then the engine is probably not affected. US gasoline standards changed in the early 2000s IIRC and maximum allowable sulfur content was reduced. NIkasil liner failures were causing no-start compression loss on YEAR-OLD motors. The consensus on the nikasil at this point is that it's probably going to stay good if it is still good for a long time. The secondary tensioners, wp and tstat housing are easy enough to swap in a weekend for around 350ish. The ZF crap box you'll just have to maintain and live with. I much prefer the W5A580/722.6 from the pre 03 XKR over the ZF 5sp. The 5sp ZF is a nice operating unit that is great until it isn't. \n\nFun cars! Buy this, take care of it and have some cheap fun. It mainly affected vehicles in the South east that used gasoline imported from Venezuela that had high levels of Sulphur. There was a monitoring program in place and select dealer had specialized equipment to monitor the blow-by on a random sample of vehicles during routine service visits. One of the Jaguar dealers I wrenched at was one of the selected and I did a number of these tests. Apparently the data indicated there was not a wide spread concern and I never heard anything about it after I started at the OE but it was not something that was openly discussed for obvious reasons. As many have stated, if it made it this far its good as the issue occurred very early in life and gas doesn\u2019t have that level of Sulphur anymore so everyone needs to get off that horse.\n\nThe tensioner issue is what it is, if they were replaced after 2005 (when the bulletin came out, old stock may have been purged before then but I can\u2019t be sure) they have \u201cthe latest and greatest\u201d. One cold start-up rattle is all you need to know you need new ones.\n\nPeople say \u201cif the water pump impeller is black, change it\u201d. That\u2019s not true, only the Nylon-66 impellers are NG and you can tell them by the following part numbers on the pump - 96JV-8501-CA, 96JV-8501-CB, 96JV-8501-CC or 96JV-8501-CD. If you have one of those part numbers, change the pump the next time you change the coolant or at the first sign the vehicle is running hot. Black Poly Phenyl Sulphide was used after that before the material color was changed to white and they are OK.\n\nThe coolant crossover and t-stat housing is subject to being eaten away and it is something that should be checked every time the coolant is drained just as a precaution.\n\nThe ZF 5HP24 was a good transmission with a very low warranty repair rate. Three weeks ago I pulled the trigger and bought a 2006 XKR coupe in the Bay area and drove it back to Oregon. The plan was for a scenic coastal drive up Hwy 1 through California then Hwy 101 up the Oregon coast. It has been my daily driver and it now has 97K miles, the last 60K have been mine and they were basically trouble-free driving. I listened to the old timers on the Jaguar Forum and first replaced all the rubber bits on the suspension, did the brakes and then once sorted with aftermarket upgrades like metal tensioners, metal T-Stat housing, etc., the car has since been very dependable. They represent the first generation of FoMoCo QC and it shows in better build quality and reliability. Parts are pretty cheap and easily obtained. If you don't do your own mechanicals, then find a local Jag shop indy who you trust. IMO Clean and well maintained examples of these will be much sought after in a few years. The styling is aging well, and they are great cars to drive. First of all there are primary and secondary tensioners. It is the secondaries we are most concerned about. The secondary tensioners rarely \"let go\" without warning, which is a cold start \"can of marbles\" noise. If you know what to look for, cam covers can be removed and a boroscope inserted to ascertain if they are new metal or older plastic units. By the middle of the 2001 MY, most of the old tensioners were phased out, so the issue really only affects the early model years 97-2001. As I recall, the parts including primary and secondaries, new plastic guides and the chains cost about $400. Lots of individual enthusiasts have changed their own and the indy shops do it all the time. If I were to buy this car, I would attempt to see whether the units have been changed by using a boroscope; short of that, I would just drive it until the early symptoms of metal to metal cold start marbles in a can became evident. I would not take an $7,000 car to the Jag dealer to have them replaced for $6000.
