I had a '99 XJR just like this one about 10 years ago, which is why I ended up buying this one. I drove it for about a year and used it to commute from Kansas City to Memphis for my Navy Reserve drill weekends. It was a higher mileage car, yet was very reliable. The 2000 models benefitted from a couple of important changes over the '98s and '99s. First, a few of the earlier cars had problems with Nikasil cylinder liners if high sulfur fuel was used. Starting with 2000, this ceased to be a problem for 2 reasons - because high sulfur fuel was outlawed after January 1, 2000 and Jaguar switched over to pressed in steel sleeves during model year 2000. Second, Jaguar introduced a new, improved secondary timing chain tensioner in the 2000 models.\nOne other thing - I am first and foremost a car enthusiast. My dealership is a hobby - yes, I'm licensed, bonded and insured, but I make my living as an estate planning/bankruptcy lawyer. The dealer license allows me to drive and experience some really cool cars. It is currently on my lift having some age related maintenance addressed. (shocks, brake hoses, replacing u-joints and rear wheel bearing on one side as I had to do other a few months ago). Still, one of the more reliable and trouble-free cars I have owned. Ford really invested heavy in the QA around this time.\n\nThe biggest issue that MUST be addressed on these is the upper timing tensioners. The originals are prone to failure and will take out your engine without warning. If this has not been done, do it immediately. May as well do the lowers at same time although they are not fatal.\n\n1st gen: Orange/dark red plastic body. Fitted launch to around 2000. Change it.\n2nd gen: Cream plastic body. Fitted 2000 to end of X308 production. Change it.\n3rd gen: Grey metal body and cream plastic guide. Retro fit from 2003 on. OK.\n\nIn regard to Niaksil engines. The first steel-lined (non-Nikasil) AJ-V8 came off the production line In the year 2000 on August 18th at 10.43am hence the engine number will read:\n\n 00 08 18 1043 or more precisely: 0008181043\n\nWith this piece of information it is simple to discern between a Nikasil and a steel-lined engine as all the numbers refer to the date of manufacture and any engine built before August 18th 2000 WILL have Nikasil bores! The only way to tell if you have a Nikasil lined engine is to check the engine number. I've heard the supercharged engine is LESS troublesome than the NA version. At any rate, I would rate the Jaguar X308 in my top 5 favorites among the 42 cars I've owned thus far. (240Z,300TD,300SD,e34 540i/6 are the others if you were curious)\n\nTwo years of basically daily use, 105k miles so far, a delight to own and drive. Apart from bulbs (and there is an intermittent false bulb check warning I can't seem to fix!) it had a noisy wheel bearing at time of purchase, and a fuel sender that intermittently read zero, which I replaced with factory part ordered from the UK at a cost of $48. Clumsiness in removing the flange at the top of the tank resulted in cracking a $309 piece of plastic. My fault. All in all, I am completely satisfied with our Jaguar XJ and don't know why I didn't take the plunge earlier- it absolutely is a car that makes you smile every time you get in. \n\nJust returned from a trip to L.A. For the 4th of July long weekend, the Jag has also taken us on the inaugural 24 Hours of LeMons rally last summer... Monterey to Vegas and back to Monterey, with a drive from Phoenix at each end... Total expenditure, 1/2 qt Castrol Syntec... And a bunch of premium gas. Its thirst for high-octane fuel is the only real downside, 17-22 mpg is what you can expect. They would deteriorate and coolant flow would be reduced leading to overheating. I believe Jaguar changed to an upgraded part to fix the problem. The service record on this car shows the water pump was \"renewed\" in September 2004, so it may have the upgrade. The real BAT experts can chime in here with better info if appropriate. \n\nOne other thing the service records indicate is that between 2009 and 2014 the car only logged about 500 miles and there were no service entries during that period. @kcattorney if you can provide any additional info that would be desirable, but if not, this is just some additional history for consideration in bidding.\n\nAll things considered this Jaguar presents really well. Both were bought as my wife\u2019s DD and both gave us years of fun driving. The first was purchased from a dealership at about 88,000 miles. I had the tensioners updated immediately and also changed the fluid and filter in the transmission. The Mercedes box is a \u2018sealed for life\u2019 design that purportedly needs no maintenance whatsoever. When the service writer told me there was no scheduled maintenance necessary I told him that every transmission ever made is \u2018sealed for life.\u2019 If you do no maintenance, it will function until it stops. Jaguar has since released a \u2018severe service\u2019 schedule that includes periodic fluid and filter changes and if that hasn\u2019t been done on this example, it should be put on the list.\nI think any Nikasil car that has survived to this date should be clear. The problems with Nikasil were high-sulphur gas which was generally sold only in the southeastern US, and short drive cycles. If you shut off the engine before you burn out all the normal condensation that accumulates, the remaining moisture combines with the engine oil to create sulphuric acid, which can then etch the Nikasil bores and lead to failure. So long as you drive long enough, frequently enough (which was never a problem for us\u2026) to burn out all the condensation, you should be fine.\nXJR #1 gave us great service with no problems until it was totaled in a rear-ender accident in 2006 with 132,000 miles. \nIt was replaced with XJR#2, bought from a private individual at 66,000 miles. At about 80,000 miles, the head gasket sprang a leak so I tore it down to the long block and replaced all the top end gaskets, seals and hoses, the tensioners and damper rails, and the timing chains. There were signs the engine had overheated in the past and I think that led to the gasket failure; it is not a common issue otherwise. Once reassembled it had no other problems; it has 130,000 miles but I no longer drive it.\nThere is a way to tell if you have a water pump with plastic or steel impellers based upon external inspection but you would have to visit Jag-Lovers to find out exactly how to do so; I just don\u2019t remember. If it has plastic impellers it should be replaced at the first opportunity.\nThere was also a throttle body recall that was performed at no charge; I don't think it extended to the 2000 MY but the dealer can tell from your VIN whether your car is covered.\nBoth cars were a blast to drive (when I could pry my wife out). The power and handling are addictive. In \u2018Normal\u2019 mode the transmission starts out in second gear, so I always left it in \u2018Sport\u2019; that also makes it hold each gear longer and downshift more readily.\nAssuming everything is currently functional and in good condition, I would not hesitate to buy another. They are ridiculously underpriced and represent enormous value and fun-per-mile for the dollar. I'll agree that the tensioners are DIY-able. However, there are other things on the car that are not very DIY friendly. We also replaced some coolant hoses under the supercharger and a few other bits. I have a wide variety of flex/wobble/etc tools to pull off all sorts of trickery getting into tight spaces, but with a more basic set of tools much of the work would have been an exercise in extreme frustration. I drove the car a fair bit both before and after those repairs and I think that for the right money they are excellent. They fill a unique niche of classic looks, modern performance, and low price. I own a 996.1 911 C2 which sold for about the same money in the same time period. Looking at them honestly, the XJR (in black, anyway..) has similar straight line speed, less expensive 'gotcha' mechanical failures, vastly more usefulness as a fairly roomy sedan with a large trunk, has MORE visual curb appeal, and trades for less than half the money. A very good upgrade is a True Gauge replacement of the stock temperature gauge. The stock unit is no better than a dummy light, meaning it will not give you accurate reading and by the time it goes into red it may be too late... Quartz in colour, which is quite nice. Man, I love to see any XJR out and about; they are beautiful cars, whether X300 or X308. Full stop. Fun to look at, fun to wash, always gets people talking, and no real issues. \n\nDoor actuators are my failure point, but it's a daily driver with some 215,000 KMs on it, so not unexpected. Getting an actuator off eBay is a breeze, and it takes about an hour to remove the burl walnut veneer, pull the door, and replace the actuator.
