After I completed the engine bay restoration and removed and replaced the engine with one from a 1987 XJ6 earlier this year, this car scored 99.91 at the San Diego Jaguar Club Concours, and 99.85 at the Inland Empire Jaguar Club Concours during Champion Division competition. A summary of the 20 JCNA Concours that I entered this car in during 2007-2019 are shown in picture 173, and the trophies are shown in pictures 168-171. I was corrected by @stimocab that it was Sir John Egan who transformed Jaguar from a horribly unreliable car to a very trouble free marque in the eighties. Starting around 1980 he basically mandated to the suppliers, get your problems fixed or hit the road as previous Jag bosses let the quality issues slide for way too long in a good 'ole boy tradition. The XJ6 in particular became as reliable if not better than that of any contemporary European luxury marks. One of my favorite memories was a planned trip from Salt Lake to Southern California (Disney Land, Burbank Studios etc) for a family vacation in the heat of late summer. I had purchased a used '86 XJ6 for my wife and her wealthy boss expressed concerns over potential problems he thought we might encounter. There is a sign on I-15 in the desert areas advising people to shut of their A/C and roll the windows down, With good reason as temperatures regularly pass the 110 degree mark. Our Jag made the trip, A/C engaged and windows up without a hint of a problem. It stung a little that her employer/uncle thought my choice of driver for her was poor judgement choosing a Jag for his secretary's daily driver. He made the same planned trip the following week in his near new 535iS and that turned out to be the worst possible choice. During the trip he lost both a fuel pump and then a transmission and my cousin's vacation turned out to be watching cartoons in hotel rooms. They never made it past Las Vegas before the allotted vacation time expired. I of course, didn't let him forget it for a few years to come. Besides being very comfortable the Series III is one of the most pleasant driving cars ever built. I've also stated IMHO I think this is the best riding car ever built. I\u2019ve mentioned before on BaT it always amazed me some old English blacksmith with his hammer and anvil working in a dimly lit back shop could build suspensions that put the so called German state of the art engineers to shame when it comes to a smooth ride. Last time I made that statement I was challenged by some fans of MB and other German makes about that statement. Being lucky enough to be in a business where I've owned and had as demonstrators a lot more experience with nearly ever major car brand ever built and I make that claim with no particular axe to grind. The '68 to '87 XJ is just plain like driving the proverbial comfortable old shoe. Just a truly amazing car from a different era. Absolutely zero, no modern features just an awesome ride. When I became the manager for the new Lexus dealership in town I was able to give her a new Lexus to drive and she turned it down in favor of her favorite ride of all time. This was the second Jaguar 4.2L XK engine transplant that I have done. When the #6 cylinder rings failed in my former 1987 XJ6 Vanden Plas I purchased a nicely running 1986 XJ6 that had major rust damage and a destroyed interior. I did the same work on my 1987 XJ6 Vanden Plas including the engine cleanup and adjustments as well as the engine bay restoration. I sold that car to a local Jaguar friend last August and he stops by regularly to tell me how pleased he is with the car. One of my other Jaguars is a Canadian market Series III 1990 V12 Vanden Plas. In the past two JCNA concours that I participated in I had two Entries in Champion Division Class C9/XJ and competed against myself. I really like the OEM mud flap look and had them on all three of my Series III saloons. They do a wonderful job of protecting the painted metal surfaces behind the wheels from stone damage. The three fur fabric overmats came standard with the premium Vanden Plas trim package. They are required to be presented outside the car for judging at JCNA concours and are judged for cleanliness and condition. The Interior Judge should take a deduction for each absent overmat if they are not presented. The original OEM fiberglass bonnet liner on my car looked like most of them that I have seen, like a moth eaten bear skin rug. After the beautiful 2007 repaint I could not bring myself to install the badly worn original bonnet liner and I found a nice appropriate aftermarket one on eBay that included the gold Jaguar leaper decal. The gold decal really pops against the black bonnet liner and matches nicely with the gold metallic look of the Antelope paint. When I look up at the bonnet liner while working on this car\u2019s engine I often think that it looks like something that Jaguar should have done. I have been searching unsuccessfully since 2007 for a decent or New Old Stock OEM bonnet liner to install. The bonnet liners in my three Series III parts cars all looked like rubbish. The shop that did the repaint in 2007 paid particular attention to the fit of all body panels especially the doors. I have made some minor adjustments myself over the past 12 years when working on the car in preparation for concours. This car has never received a concours deduction for any panel fit issues and the fitment is probably as good as it can be for a car of this vintage. I will take some pictures of the doors tomorrow and ask the BaT folks to add them to my photo gallery. The Series III saloons had a black vinyl shifter surround through 1985. Jaguar started installing the wood veneer shifter surrounds in 1986 which continued until the end of Series III production in 1992. My Canadian market Series III 1990 V12 Vanden has a burl walnut shifter surround. If a wood veneer shifter surround was installed in my 1984 XJ6 Vanden Plas it should receive an authenticity deduction by Interior Judge. Jaguar designed the Series III saloons to have 7 inch outer headlamp bulbs but the US DOT knew better and mandated 5 \u00be inch outer bulbs. My two remaining Series III saloons both have the 7 inch outer headlamp bulbs and I find that the 5 \u00be inch bulbs with the beauty trim rings appear a bit silly. In my opinion one of the best things that a USA market Series III owner can do to improve the appearance of their car is to remove the 5 \u00be outer bulbs and install the 7 inch ones like I did on this car. Page VI-9 of the 2019 JCNA Concours Rule Book states: \u201cEntries are allowed to have any style and/or size headlamps, offered by Jaguar Cars Ltd., Jaguar Cars Inc. or Jaguar Canada Inc for the specific model, regardless of the country to which the car was originally delivered.\u201d Series III saloons should not receive a deduction for 7 inch outer headlamps and if they do the Entrant should protest the deduction. I was the Chief Judge of the San Diego Jaguar Club for a few years and dealt with a range of complicated concours technical matters. When the Judges and Entrants both know and abide by the JCNA concours rules it is a great system and can be a lot of fun. I think this covered all of your comments. I'm partial however, and can say the Antelope color is just pure class. Had the same one in an 86. Rear seat head rests were added in 1986, however a nice addition to an 84 vanden plas as I always thought the rear seats looked funny without them. When I got this car in 2000 the seams in the rear seats had separated in places and there were a couple of holes in the leather. About the time of the 2007 repaint I purchased pretty much the entire interior (seats, door panels, console, etc) from a totaled 1987 XJ6 Vanden Plas with the same Doeskin color interior. Prior to the repaint I removed most of the interior from my car and then while the repaint was going on I cleaned, treated, and redyed the leather of the best of the pieces I had from two interiors with Leatherique products so that they looked like new. After I got the car home from the repaint I installed the very best pieces of what I had and this gave the car an almost new look that matched the now beautiful exterior. Since then I have treated the leather occasionally with Leatherique Rejuvenator and redyed specific areas to keep them looking as close to new as I can make them. I agree that the Vanden Plas rear seat backs with the head rests looks much better that the ones without particularly when the front seats have head rests. Hundreds of those parts which looked as new are now in use on my Jaguars, including this one, replacing broken, rusty, or otherwise worn components. In addition to using the parts myself, I sold many hundreds of good used parts from my parts cars on eBay and directly to buyers. During the next dozen years, and a few more Jaguar interior restorations, I graduated to using an air brush powered by my shop compressor to apply the dye. The air brush technique is a much superior method to apply the dye evenly and the final result can look nearly identical to new leather. I redyed much of the interior of this car initially with the foam brush technique. However, I used the air brush technique on the beautiful New Old Stock (NOS) front seat bottoms and center console armrest. Those parts came from a big parts purchase that I made a few years ago where I purchased dozens (hundreds?) of NOS Jaguar Series III XJ and XJ-S parts at an estate sale of a Jaguar enthusiast. Many of those parts are now on this car replacing worn little bits and pieces or other things that just didn't look like new anymore. The front seats bottoms and center console lid were a slightly different Jaguar color than Doeskin, but after I removed some of that dye, treated the leather, and then air brushed the Doeskin dye on, they matched the other interior components and remain soft and beautiful as you can see in the gallery pictures. Because I redyed the vinyl with the same Leatherique dye as the leather the consistency of the color throughout the interior of the car is really quite good. Much of the interior is original and now 35 years old. Even though I treated the leather a few times over the years with the Leatherique products the only parts that really feel as new are the beautiful front seat bottoms. I took this picture while driving in second gear after the engine was thoroughly warmed up to show that the replacement engine has good strong oil pressure. According to page 16 of the Jaguar Series III Handbook \u201cThe minimum [oil] pressure at 3,000 rev/min, when hot, should not be less than 40 [PSI]\u201d. The reason that I removed and replaced the original engine was due to very low oil pressure, and a blown head gasket. It also was a blessing in disguise because it gave me an excuse to restore the engine bay. I put on over 2,500 miles on this car since I installed the replacement engine earlier this year. The oil pressure is well above specification, there has been no measurable coolant usage, and this car easily passed the CA Smog Check on 4/27/19. The results of the CA Smog Check, as shown in gallery photo 174, were not only well below the Maximum Allowed, but all of the Hydrocarbon (HC) and Carbon Monoxide (CO) test results were below the average of all passing cars tested. I know that many states and countries do not require Smog Checks, but they are required in California where I live. All Entries are judged to the same basic standards although there are some relaxations for cars in Driven Division for radios, wheels, tires, etc. Champion Division Entries have their Exteriors, Interiors, Engine Compartment, and Boot (Trunk) (including spare tire, tools, owner\u2019s manuals) judged for Cleanliness, Condition, and Authenticity. In Driven Division the Exterior and Interior are judged, but the Engine Compartment and Boot/Tools/Owners Manuals are not. A perfect score in Champion Division is 100.00 and in Driven Division it is 10.00. In Champion Division 3 trained JCNA Certified Judges inspect the Entry for 15 minutes at the same time, each judging a different component area recording deductions. In Driven Division 2 trained JCNA Certified Judges inspect the Entry for 15 minutes at the same time recording deductions. On 7/13/19 this car received a score of 99.91 with no deductions (0.0) from the Exterior Judge, some Cleanliness and Condition deductions (0.5) from the Interior Judge, and some Cleanliness and Condition deductions (0.4) from the Engine Compartment Judge. On 10/5/19 this car received a score of 99.85 with some Cleanliness and Condition deductions (1.1) from the Exterior Judge, two Cleanliness and Conditions deductions (0.3) from the Interior Judge, and one Cleanliness and Condition deduction (0.1) from the Engine Compartment Judge. If you walked into a USA Jaguar dealership in 1984 and asked to see their \u201cTop of the line sedan\u201d you would be shown the Vanden Plas. \"Vanden Plas\" is the name of a very old and respected Dutch company that built horse carriages and coaches for royalty. Jaguar purchased Vanden Plas. The original owners of my car paid $37,706 for it in 1984, the equivalent of $93,111 in today\u2019s dollars. Not only did the Vanden Plas have all the usual equipage found in the base XJ6 model, it had a special premium trim package that included the following: \n1. Interior wood made of higher quality figured hand burnished burl walnut, front and rear door cappings with boxwood inlays.\n2. Seats made of a higher quality Connolly leather with contoured bolsters without pleats around front of base and top of backrest with pleated leather insets. Standard XJ6 seats had pleats that run from front to back of seat bottom and top to bottom of seat back. \n3. Seats made of leather even around sides and back. The standard XJ6 had vinyl for those areas not directly in contact with the occupants. \n4. Door pull/armrests separate from map pockets on both front and rear seats and \"puddle lamps\" on all doors. \n5. Center consoles with an extension at the rear for a cigar lighter and a chrome plated ashtray.\n6. Plush fur fabric rugs for the front passenger and in both rear passengers.\n7. Dashboard instruments that are countersunk so that edges of bezels are almost flush with the wood, whereas standard XJ6 instrument bezels stand out above the wood. \n8. Trunk (boot) lids with a protective fiberboard inner cover and a chromed \u201cVanden Plas\u201d badge.\n9. Rear seats with a center fold down arm rest with a storage compartment.\n10.
