The original Wagoneers were the first 4WDs available with automatic transmission, independent front suspension, and plush interior. This one has all three.\r\n\r\nA wonderful original, right down to the color matched gas cap!\r\n\r\nThe best looking Wagoneer of them all. No wood grain for me!\r\n\r\nInterior looks to be in serviceable condition, which is a plus, because none of the interior parts are reproduced. The original radio would have been a Jeep-branded Motorola. Shouldn't be too hard to find, if you want one. \r\n\r\nThe Tornado engine was a great performer in its day, but had some teething problems. Motor mounts were built into the timing chain cover, which was known for leaks. There is a kit to add another bolt. Timing chain is very long and prone to jumping. Also, the bottom end is not very stout, and not able to take the high rpm pounding the cylinder head is capable of dishing out. It is a tricky engine to rebuild..if you mill the head or block the timing chain will be too slack. Don't do it unless you intend to spray weld it back up again. \r\n\r\nRust, as always, is an issue. First place to look is the floorboard carpet on each side of the rear seat. I am also told that the torsion bars on the IFS were known for pulling away from the frame. \r\n\r\nThe auto trans in this is a Borg-Warner, not a Hydramatic. I doubt that it has a two-speed transfer case, but anything is possible. Can't say whether the auto trans is a plus or minus from a \"collector\" point of view, but I can tell you that it really zaps the otherwise broad power band of the Tornado. \r\n\r\nGLWTS. So really before you buy take the next few days getting educated.\r\n\r\nYes this is an early jeep, and yes it's a non woody (thank god). I've got two of them one restored and one not. This jeep is highly original and although cool it will need some serious maintenance to get it where it needs to be. \r\nSome of the major issues are going to be a rehab of the suspension and finding the parts to do it correctly. Most people don't realize when they get into these jeeps that most of the aftermarket companies only have parts for 1975 and newer, so the Kaiser era Jeeps are pretty much left out in the cold. Ebay and out of the way Jeep recyclers will be your best friend. Ask me how I know!! Lol\r\nFor example the Jeep has a very rare...and in most Jeepers mind a complete POS! Most of these jeep have had them removed and junked. Making this very rare to see...but good luck finding parts and from the looks of the photos this will need to be completely gone through. Bushings look like they are harder then steel, and the internals are most likely the same. It may go down the road some but its a far cry from correct.\r\nSecond do a web search for the leaf springs. You will not find them, so those to be correct will all need to be custom made. If you call BJ'S OffRoad and tell them what you have they will laugh, and tell you to quit your job and make Ebay searching your life.\r\n\r\nNow I don't fully want to freak anyone out, this is a nice original rig but you need to understand why, most will have no idea where to start to do a restoration. They will get into this and in a few months of trying to track down the parts will get tired of it. It takes time, I took so much longer on mine and became a internet ninja to find parts. \r\n\r\nSo ask yourself, do I want to take on a major project and have things apart for months while you hunt. If you like to keep on projects and messing with them then you may be the person for this. It's not going to be the work, it's going to be finding the NOS parts or listening to Internet Cowboys talking crap leading you in circles to find the parts.\r\n\r\nIf your a person that wants to have someone build it for you, then a call to Jeep Heritage will be what you need to do. Just make sure your bank account has many $000000 in it. They would honestly be the best to restore a good driver, and be able to hunt the things needed.\r\n\r\nThis jeep restored will not be the $100,000 Grand Wagoneer that sold at Barret two weeks ago...the earlier jeeps don't bring that money. Although a PITA to deal with to get the correct ones made it can be done. New owner will find that depending on where they live it may be harder the you think. In more urban areas the spring shops have closed as the older suspensions do not keep them busy, where as more rural areas with farm equipment to service there will be more. In my area it's harder.\r\n\r\nIt's mostly the other parts of the jeep that are direct to this early model in the suspension and axels that are going to be hard to source. They just don't exist anymore and by the look of the photos this will need to be done. The corrosion on the bottom of the jeep is surprising and has not been dealt with for a long time. So finding these parts will be a massive challenge in good shape or NOS. Personally I would not trust the suspension mounts to the chassis as they are normally held on by rivets and by the looks of the rust on them are probably compromised and dangerous outside of a slow drive to the store and back.\r\n\r\nThen there is the rust....I would be again surprised if thats the only area, more detail needs to go to the top of there rear arch, front, frame mounts for leaf springs (post mounts for early kaiser), and then look under the front area carpet and by the mounting points to the chassis. Wagoneer all had a common area of rust at the floor of the kick panels because the air vents would clog at the drain and water would pour into the interior of the jeep.\r\n\r\nThis is a good Jepp and rare, not trying to talk bad but I do know the time invested into these to get them right. Some buyers on this site (not all) are not as versed in cars in a mechanical sense and want something unique and different and this jeep is, its just going to need some stuff that is more then a basic Bronco or FJ so buyers should read up. If I was doing it all again I would really consider buying post 1975 now that I know the difficulty of parts, lack of overall knowledge on the early IFS Jeeps and in the end driving enjoyments. Very little reproduction available overall, This wag deserves to be restored, its very complete. I would swap out both axles with a 75-79 wagoneer narrow track donor. You will get leaf springs, disc brake front, dana 44 strength, and 6 lug hubs.....All undetectable to most observers. Scrounging suspension parts problem solved. Now take the body off and start blasting 45 years of scale rust..... This jeep is the rarest of the rare. Ferrari 250 SWB's are absolutely common place compared to this one. For starters it is a Custom model, shown in the VIN as 1414C. Most Wagoneers were just 1414. It has independent front suspension, which I have never come across after years of looking. In my experience the cars are not hard to work on / restore at all, as long as they are complete as this one appears to be. What makes a restoration hard is missing door panels or special trim. Mechanically speaking the cars are very straight forward, the 230 OHC six is really a nice motor. And everything can be rebuilt. I have a 1964 Custom Wagoneer that I have restored mechanically and a 1968 Super Wagoneer with the Buick 350. Also the years indicated on the titles of the earliest Wagoneers can sometimes be misleading as to when the cars were actually built, because when the Jeeps were sold/titled is sometimes when the year was assigned. These were not cheap cars when new and sat on dealer lots for a while.( that is just my opinion.) Given the serial number I think this could be a 1963 built Jeep. The factory was in Toledo, Ohio and most were sold by far in the Great Lakes snowbelt. Big enemy of cars in this region is rust, which is caused by road salt, not snow by itself. So, most of these flaked away when they were almost new. However, occasionally you find one that spent its life in a rural area where they don't use so much salt, and they are surprisingly rust free.
