For E9 restoration experts - what are your opinions on the condition of this car? Do you think there is anything lurking under the surface? What about the front strut and inner fender hiding spots?\n\nIs it me or does the left front grill trim look out of place or bent weirdly? It just looks different when compared to the right front grill trim. Other than the right rear bumper dent, this coupe looks to be in well preserved condition. Another nice touch is the 5 speed which really makes the long hauls enjoyable by dropping the revs quite a bit . I\u2019m assuming this is an OD unit and not a close ratio. It\u2019s tough to find a compete tool box so thumbs up there. The Nardi steering wheel and the Alpina style rims complete the period look of usual upgrades. Well done. The trim may be bent. Or, more likely, the grills are not installed symmetrically. The grills are held in by six screws that screw into threaded U nuts. The U nuts are installed onto metal tabs on the body. The nuts can move on the tabs, and the tabs can move on the body, which in turn impacts where the grills end up. And sometimes the grills crack at the mounting points, so that one or two of them are no longer holding. It takes a bit of time and patience to get these symmetrical. \r\n\r\nAs to the length of the throw when shifting, there are a multitude of BMW selector rods that can be used when changing to a five speed, which means you have pretty much pick the throw you want. I used an e21 part when I did my conversion. \r\n\r\nLastly as to the comment on reliability, any time you buy a 50 year old car you need to bring it up to a baseline where you know it is working well. That means replacing certain parts unless you know they are not too old (hoses, belts, bushings, batteries and tires), and testing the electrical, cooling, braking and suspension systems to ensure proper function. If the jadegrun sticker was installed after the fact, what about the other stickers? In photo 125, below the last strut nut, there is a hole in the rubber insulation. Is that an area of past or current rust? In photo 126, below the coil, there is a small section of paint that has flacked off. Is that a rust bubble that popped? The rust that is present in the trunk, is that inside surface rust or is that rust coming through from the outside? Excuse the question if it is stupid. I haven't looked at an E9 seriously in 40 years. Is that a new driver side front floor pan in photo 151, 154-158? In photo 156, the area where the pedal box would be, is that area rusty or solid? Since the tires are wider in back the wheels might be staggered width as well. Is there a spare Alpina style tire/wheel that comes with the car? Is the spare tire, gas tank and trunk floor with the car? You don't show a photo of them. Are the wheel housings re-covered or still bare metal? Our focus was to keep everything as original as possible ... san the US \"diving board\" bumpers and the auto trans.\r\n\r\nThe car was soon repainted to match existing color, due mainly to sun fading on the roof and lids. Took the opportunity to upgrade the bumpers, fill door dings, remove marker lights, replace all weather stripping,etc. Lothar provided the bumpers from a '72 E9, as well as the shift console for the five speed. He also helped in setting things back to '72 stock (ride ht, etc), finding rare ac parts and much more.\r\n\r\nThe wheels are 16\" Coupeking. There are only four of them. The sale also includes the 5 original Alpina-style 14\" alloys.\r\n\r\nGas door should snap back into place, it has the original spring so it sometimes benefits from some encouragement to fully close.\r\n\r\nRegarding the yellow wire in photos 123, etc, it was added to power the driving lights added out front. Switch on lower dash is a factory type; matches the flasher switch to the other side of the steering column. The black tube is the feed for windshield washing - which needs to be reconnected.\r\n\r\nThe suspension bushings were all reviewed 2 years ago as part of an extensive review and repair (brakes, carbs rebuilt, exhaust, etc.) by Lother before the car moved with me to the Northwest. He had the car in his shop for three months during that winter. Drove like a new car when I picked it up the following April.\r\n\r\nLights under the hood and trunk work. The small black box below the front speaker is the lower half of the gear indicator for the auto trans. Rather than try to remove it and expose the holes for wiring leads, I kept it to hold the radio remote and later a smaller cell phone. The audio speakers were upgraded but placed in their existing locations, one at the front center dash and one at the rear package shelf. Just trying to keep everything as original as possible by using the original openings. No additional speakers were added. Antenna is original manual type. All the leather and interior components are original.\r\n\r\nI will let 911r address the rust issues as they have inspected every inch of the car in the last 30 days; removing seats, trunk panels, trim, etc. as their reputation is on the line, as well. \r\n\r\nEnjoying the discussions over the color. Just know it was repainted to match the original paint and by any name ..... it is beautiful.\r\n\r\nThis was a special one-owner find. I have been fortunate to have become a friend to the original owner and had Lothar as a guiding light and friend to steer me straight with the restoration work and keeping it in fine tune. It has always been garaged under a cover, driven less dramatically than Matt's video and was shipped, not driven, across the country as part of a recent move westward.
