The same attributes that helped the Coupe GT win that comparison test are still present in mine - a torquey 5-cylinder that feels more powerful than its 110-horsepower rating and sounds like a symphony of the gods, excellent handling and agility in this 2,500-pound car, and amazing feel from the steering, gearbox, brakes and suspension. Then a few years later, it was the same \u201cproblem\" with the Audi Quattro. In 1984 it happened again with the Porsche 944 Turbo. \u201cUgh, we have to use that skinny 924, and the only way the 951 Turbo is going to be safe is with more of those ugly fender flares\u201d.\n\nI believe the original Acura Legend got \u201cstuck\u201d with fender flares too as the narrow starting platform likely could not go wider in the middle, which was a trend in the mid sedan segment at the time. You can imagine the discussion at Honda too... \u201cWe\u2019ll fix it with the second generation.\u201d To be honest, the flares didn\u2019t always look great \u2014 I\u2019m not sure the 1987 BMW M3 looked better than a narrow-body E30 or even the E36. The body engineers were quick to point out that the sides on a flared car were not smooth enough for good aerodynamic performance. And there was the problem of needing two bodies at the plant, the narrow-body and the wide, which is terrible for manufacturing efficiency. \n\nSo instead of the wide and narrow-body Supras of the early 80s, we got the always-wide 4,000-pound car starting in 1987. Instead of the Quattro, we got the bathtub Audi 80 in 1986. In place of the Elvis in Hawaii Legend, we got the fat Elvis Legend in 1991. \n\nSome manufacturers, like Nissan with the 1986.5 Hardbody and Mazda with the 1987 RX-7, designed the blisters in from the beginning and had great success. The second-gen RX7 was the best selling one ever and ditto for the Hardbody. \n\nIt was ironic to me that the brand that started it all, Porsche, was the one to screw it up the most. I remember their engineers saying when the 996 came out in 1999, \u201cLook, we straighten out the \u2018ugly' sides, made the car much more aerodynamic AND gave it a fuller cabin.\" The 996 looked like crap, and as soon as they finished their victory lap, management ordered the designers to work on puffing out the fenders again (C4S).
