One of my riding companions experienced such a failure three times with his 2008 K1200GT. I have put approximately 150,000 miles on four BMWs with enclosed driveshafts with no final drive issues. 50,000 and 80,000 of those miles were put on a 2013 K1300S and a 2008 K1200GT, respectively, with no final drive issues (and those were hard miles). My local dealer informed me that BMW now includes final drive inspection with each scheduled service and replacement of final drives every 36,000 miles regardless of inspection results.
