The Audi is similarly comfortable as a cruiser/commuter, with a bit of a period sport sedan edge of course. I am well known in the Audi circles for these cars and lots of documented photos of work done and trips with this car are easily found on my social media.\r\n\r\nI do feel the need to comment because it appears that this vehicle is being sold as if it has original mileage on it. It\u2019s TMU. The odometer broke on the vehicle when I initially drove it home in 2019 at 38,602 and I never changed the broken odometer gear. For the last 2.5 years of my ownership this car went from Hartford to Philadelphia at least once a month and on top of all the other trips to car shows and daily driving tasks, I sold it last year with the disclosure the estimated mileage is probably between 50-55K: still low, but not as low as represented here.\r\n\r\nThe ad states that antilock brakes are equipped on this vehicle: they are not.\r\n\r\nIt was sideswiped while parked in Staten Island sometime in the 90s and had body work done on the right side, which was beginning to fail at my time of purchase so I elected to have the car fully repainted in 2019. Alpine White is originally a single stage color and the clear coat finish will\r\ngive it away that it\u2019s not original. The only original finish present on the car would be the front bumper.\r\n\r\nThe timing belt was done in 2019 and then again in 2021 due to a defective water pump, however the mileage between 2019 and 2021 on the car was minimal (maybe 2-3K), so the current belt does have some use. My family has experience with the C3 generation, starting with my 1989 purchase of an as-new '87 5000S 5-speed for $7,000 (thank you, 60 Minutes). I sold it for the same amount a year later on AutoTrader.\n\nThe positives included incredibly comfortable velour seats and a powerful A/C system provided by GM (they also provided the power seats). The car had excellent aerodynamics and there was literally no wind noise on the freeway (to this day, I marvel at the flush-mounted side glass). However, driving aggressively was disappointing due to its front-heavy design and narrow tires, which caused a loss of traction when pulling hard from a stop, noticeable dive and reduced cornering grip. It felt like a big body on top of a platform designed for a smaller car, which it was. The small, 2.3-liter engine was underpowered despite sounding great.\n\nThe auction car's Quattro system, firmer suspension, wider tires and wider rear track should address the handling issues, while the turbocharger will boost power. My Dad liked mine so much that he bought a 1-year-old '88 5000S auto for $13,000. He didn't drive as hard as me and loved that car. It was super reliable, needing only a transmission rebuild at around 100,000 miles, which didn't cost much.\n\nAudi could never decide on the headlights. The '84 models featured four square eyes on both the Turbo and non-Turbo. In '86, the non-Turbo models, like mine and Dad's, received Euro-style one-piece headlamps. However, the Turbos, like the action car, got a different one-piece design that somehow managed to look like a sealed beam. Has anyone else noticed this or have an explanation for it?\n\nNot sure why BaT isn't running a Car and Driver vintage article about 5000 Turbos with this auction.
