And painting the entire underside, with preservation as the aim... I don't detect any covered-up rust.\r\n\r\nI was 15 when my dad traded our family's '64 in on the '66 that I still have. So it is fun to look at cars like this, and jog old memories. So bear with me, I have more than a few observations, and a couple of questions. Here goes.\r\nPhoto #89 (and 92) shows the spark plug boots being all the straight type. Originally supplied were some with a nearly right-angle, to clear linkages etc. Not sure whether those might be available now or not. These don't look completely seated, they should be tight to the sheet metal.\r\nPhoto #90 I spot a lock on the spare. At one time, those were in short supply, nice to see it here.\r\nPhoto #91 The master battery power cutoff switch is nice for theft prevention, and preserving the battery during long storage. The battery hold-down cross-bar is of course not an original. I think that Chevy supplied one which was maybe 1/4\" steel rod, formed to do the task. What is seen under the alternator is the oil cooler. I think there should be a removable plate to cover it for warm weather running. Open like we see it here keeps the air inside the engine compartment warmer,\r\nPhoto #107 has me curious: there appears to be a chain attached to the bolt at the left shroud edge, and the damper door is open. Is the chain holding it that way?\r\nIn photo #110 part of the flywheel is exposed. All of my experience with Corvairs have been manual transmission cars, so I am not sure, but likely there should be a cover of some sort there. Anyone?\r\nPhoto #114 is a clear view of the jacking instructions, showing original jack and lug wrench/handle style, where it was mounted, and where to place it under the car to lift. The jack on the floor of the trunk is not an original scissors type, and I would be very cautious about using it, as the mechanics/leverage may not be compatible. Prospective bidders would probably like a peek under the liner of the frunk. I would. Nothing nasty expected on this car; the liner is not a form-fitted one.... something nicer should be available if desired. And all the duct tape could then be eliminated..... :-)\r\nPhoto #144 shows a power outlet, obviously aftermarket. If someone wanted to clean that up, there is a spot where an original style could be located, to the left of the ignition switch. Currently with a cover blank in place.\r\nPerhaps @ralf-who knows whether the fresh air vent grilles are the original style. My memory is fuzzy on these (photo #74 and others). I thought they fit more flush. The actuating cable for the right vent (Photo #63) should be able to be hidden behind the kick panel, instead of outside of it.\r\nAnyone familiar with cars from the 60's and before should recognize the sintered metal fuel filters, in Photo #119. Fit in the carburetor inlets. Many were deleted when an in-line filter was added.\r\nAnd the fun: Photo #125 shows two 1/3 valve covers. VERY useful when adjusting valve rocker arm lash/lifter preload on a warm/running engine. Won't prevent a bit of spray/splashing, but will keep most of the oil from just running down across everything below. Also seen in that photo is a very cool tool: THE thing to have for removing tight/stuck pushrod tubes when doing an engine reseal.\r\n\r\nIMO, this is a really handsome nice weather driver's car. Just enough little things for a new owner to fiddle with, on the way to making good friends with it. The covers you mention are seasonal and cover the openings in the shrouds on each side of the engine, visible in picture 87, aft of the alternator and aft of the distributor. They should be open (covers removed) for winter operation to allow some of the heated air to recirculate into the engine compartment for faster warm-up. They should be closed in the summer to defeat this return air. It was sold in Allegan MI by a Chevy dealer. Technically, he never \"Sold\" it, he demo'd it to his mom that lived in AZ. The car stayed with her until the late 90s when she passed away and the car was brought back to MI. This is the biggest reason why the car is so clean underneath. Once in MI, the dealer repainted it in the same color. I guess the paint had faded from the AZ sun. The previous owner, who is also the first legal owner, bought in Allegan MI from the same dealer that sold it new. He redid the dash, headliner and seats. They were cracked, sagging and faded. Over the years, he enjoyed it at local car shows and tinkered with it in his heated garage. The car was always covered and in a heated garage. It was driven very little during his 20 year ownership. I found out about it through a mutual friend. It was never listed for sale. Both the owner and his wife are in their late 80s and they are not as active as they used to be. Their hope is that the car will go to someone that will enjoy it as much as they have. \r\nThis is a true original miles car, that comes with tons and tons of documentation. It starts right up, idles beatifully and drives amazingly. Though it needs to be pushed or rolled at least 18-20 mph to engage the Powerglide to start. Thank you, Dreamer. It's only recently that I've been driving a PG Corvair; all of my previous (many) Corvairs have been stick. Until today, I'd've sworn that you can't push-start a PG anything, since the fluid coupling between the engine and trans is so 'slippy'. Sure enough, it it outlined in the Owner's Manual. But the caveat is this: While you can push-start a manual at, perhaps, 3 MPH, you can't do it in a PG until around 20MPH. The first can be done with a one-man push, the second probably requires a decent downhill slope. But apparently, it IS doable. Woulda never have thunk it! In the early 70s I drove my '66 Corsa for three days with no battery. Started the car six times. Three at home and three at work. The first time I needed a push, the last five I made sure to park on an incline which in the SF valley foothills, was pretty easy to find. Don't think I could've done it with a PG - not enough momentum.
