The first series of these Lucas fuel injection series, as found on this car, if unattended, prone to allow fuel to mix with the engine oil particularly on startup, wash down the cylinders and end up with a full rebuild of the bottom end. Many owners in the early days were perplexed, when checking their oil levels, to find them rising rather than falling with mileage -- due to the fuel that was being allowed in by the injection system. So, they have to be working properly- at the risk of a lost motor over time. There are a few people with expertise in these, one in Europe and a couple in the US. There may, of course be more, but their paucity and the nature of the fi commands high prices, often at the level described. It's also one of the reasons why a lot of folks abandon the f.i. systems on these cars and revert to three Weber carburettors. These work fine but at the cost of the originality, charm, and some performance (controversy about that), My fully restored Sebring Series 1 retains its Lucas injection and, although it has been totally reliable since, I still watch the oil level carefully and send a small sample off for analysis every 2000 miles (very simple and very cheap to do). I hope these observations from a long time owner of a Maserati with this motor and intake system will be helpful.
