I've had it for 18 years now. I bought it from a previous boss who lost steam restoring it in the 90s. The body work had been done and it ran, but the suspension was shot and the interior out. I spent about 9 months cleaning the underside, rebuilding the suspension/brakes, and installing the interior. It looked and ran great and was my everyday driver for about 3 years. Such a pleasure to drive ...until it all started to go downhill. \n\nFirst, I was rear-ended by somebody with no insurance and no money (no point in suing them), ...then it started smoking on overrun, ...then it started popping out of 4th gear. At that point I parked it intending a full resto when I had the money and the time.\n\n...That was 13 years ago. I've finally realized I'm never going to get to it. It just needs too much. It's time for it to go to a loving home where it gets the care it needs.\n\nAll the engine details I know: When I purchased the car, the seller told me the original engine needed a rebuild and a deal came up on another good running 72 tii motor. In it went. It's the proper engine, just not numbers matching. You'll note the front intake runner has been patched. It blew out during a backfire and was replaced with a new part from BMW to have the tabs break off in less than 6 months. Rather than spend $70.00 on another suspect new one, I patched the old one with epoxy and electrical tape. \n\nI just put a new battery in the car and it runs well enough to load and unload from a trailer. I taped up a cracked fuel hose from the tank to the electric pump to get it running.\n\nAs noted, I can deliver on an open trailer in the Pacific Northwest. This is a great price. Advice : Like darrinm said the FAQ is a great resource. There is also the tii register and the BMCCA where greybeards will be glad to help. Do not go with a \"Restoration\" Palace. This car needs sorted mechanicals and the FAQ and BMWCCA can point you to the nearest/best one. The bodywork same thing. What you have there will be 80% survivor thanks to the Zeibart so do 'de minimis' to get it back as what it is. Leave the concours for idiots like me and others who now have a vehicle they hesitate to drive and hence a garage queen. You already have the best seats so the only possible upgrade is a 5 speed which will pay itself back many times over in reduced wear on the car (and you) on long trips. I'm very partial to the Behr a/c because I love the console and now with small Clardy rotary compressors instead of the original huge York units there is much less power loss and much less weight on the nose. Replace any of the bushings and the ball joints and the car will handle like new and a large smile will be growing on your face. Other upgrades you may consider are the 320i starter and converting to Pertronix (gets rid of the points) ignition. When the engine is out have the radiator professionally cleaned and reconditioned. We 2002 drivers had mutated an extra eye just to keep an eye on the temp guage. I personally would not mess with the engine ie no cam because it is what it is and what it is is good enough already. For a while I ran a '74 tii that nailed 80 in 2nd. You can go with headers and a low-restriction exhaust like Ansa which is period correct. Pull that gas tank, have it boiled out and repainted if necessary and while you're at it go after the fuel pump and in-tank filters and uptake. Replace any of the braided fuel hose you find with quality hose. Pull the brakes and flush the system, check the thickness and trueness of the rotors. Hopefully the rear cylinders are ok if not replace them. Like I said before change the engine mounts and if you do a 5 speed you should do the guibo, clutch and throwout bearing,\n\nThere is reason that the car received larger tail lights in '74, The brake lights are too low to be seen well when in close quarters, especially from an SUV. You must put in a high-mounted LED somewhere it can be seen. because dark green is at a higher risk of being hit than most other colors - it happened to me in my Agave.
