Specifically, what\u2019s the significance of \u201dacrylic white\u201d, and why might we care about integrity or the tricky term, \u201coriginality\u201d? \nFirst, what I should have liked to convey in the listing is that the car has been repainted with acrylic enamel. Also, the color has been retained for aesthetic and sentimental reasons, but not for \u201coriginality\u201c for its own sake. I\u2019ll try to explain that further below with a story about this car\nBut first, why did I paint it with acrylic enamel? As many/most of you know, acrylic enamel is a one step, fast drying, petroleum based automotive finish widely used in the 1960s. In addition to its benefits to the manufacturing process, adopting use of acrylic enamel also allowed Morgans to offer a wider range of choices in standard colors as well as for custom orders. For Morgans, I personally like the look of the glossy, non metallic colors in basic hues, especially if the the finish is robust enough to stand a lot of use and still look good. Thus the sixties and seventies Morgans were all eye candy for me. \n\nBut I am also a fellow who believes a car may be any color and finish preferred by the owner; especially with Morgans, where there can be so much choice at the time of an original order, and a great acceptance within the community of owners for endless further modification of a car, including it\u2019s color. \n\nEnter my story of the original purchaser of chassis 5059. I had the opportunity to talk with him at length at the time of my purchase of the car. In 1962 he was an artist of some fame, and professor of art at UCLA. He admired Morgans and had been an occasional browser at the dealership not far from campus. One day, he said, he walked into the showroom and beheld \u201ca white Morgan!\u201d Not a cream colored one, but dazzling white. He bought it on the spot. \nNow to my train of decisions, and to the artist\u2019s passion for that color on a Morgan car. Maybe I thought I wanted a dark green four seater, but I was able to appreciate his sensibility; after all it did look good in white (however frazzled in its reduced circumstances) and it had spent its first decade in white. I decided to respect that and to retain the integrity of THIS touring car . A car like this wasn\u2019t an anonymous lump. It was an identity with a happy history. I never think, \u201cit is white because the factory said it was dispatched that way,\u201d but because it was loved that way. I have always admired the color too. I never knew what ICI or DuPont might have called the color \u2014 It didn\u2019t matter. In 1973, my painter and I looked through paint chips and chose a Ford truck white from the 1960s, which looked like what we could find on the car, which wasn\u2019t sun faded. After the car was painted I drove it back down to the car port where I had first seen it, to show the seller. He \u201capproved\u201d the color, and it has remained such ever since. I used that same color formula 20 years later for the second repaint, and I still try to keep a fresh pint available \u201cjust in case.\u201d \nI am here and happy to answer any questions. This car has not been a victim of what I will phrase as \"The good idea club\" whereby folks want to use screws and washers to secure the door panels vs tacked on as being just one example. Unfortunately so many people just modify come up with their own ideas and make these cars non original. This one is very tidy and clean and well cared for. When you are touring, you can pile your bags in the backseat and everything stays dry under either tonneau cover or top. You can pack all your picnic gear and chairs in the back to go to a show or for a drive to a picnic. Yes, I did have four adults in the car for a drive from Vancouver to Whistler one time and it worked great. I did give my back seaters goggles based on an experience with a friend riding backseat when we did a rally one time. In the cold it can be brutal sitting in the back as the wind does hit you straight on. Dress for it!\nAs to the comments on paint. I am often asked the colour of my paint and the factory called it \"K Blue.\" Probably just means the factory used \"A Blue,\" B Blue,\" etc. I spoke with the fellow in 1974 who painted my car at the factory. He said he painted all the cars in the previous 24 years except 10 per year when he was on holidays. I asked him about paint colours and he said you can have any colour you want as long as it is sold by the manufacturer. Any colour is an original Morgan colour if it was used. If it wasn't used, it is still a Morgan colour! So the white chosen by this seller is legitimate, if not the original colour of this car.\nAlso, a comment was made on fixes and changes to originality. Peter Morgan told me the factory did not expect any of the cars they made to still be on the road after seven years let alone 70. He enjoyed looking at and commended changes we made to keep our cars useable. Some of these changes were adopted by the factory in later years. It had a long race history including having been raced for a while with a Lotus Twincam engine. At some point an American living in the UK bought it at a well-known dealer (agent) near Malvern. He was asked if he wanted the Lotus engine reinstalled and he declined, saying he was returning to the US soon and wanted something reliable and easy to maintain. So the dealer installed a Ford 1600 (used in the 4/4 model for many years beginning after 1967) and a Cortina gearbox. After so many years of hard use the car had gotten pretty worn out so he returned it to the Morgan factory and asked them to rebuild it. They laid down a new chassis and replaced or rebuilt everything but the engine and gearbox -- new wheels, new brakes, new body tub (aluminum alloy this time, giving it a curb weight of 1330 lbs), new interior, new weather gear, etc. He chose a black leather interior, white weather gear and a Citroen paint color that looked dark red in some light and brown in other conditions. About 15 years ago I bought a 1963 +4 fourseater (5513) from the estate of a car collector in California. The estate manager had some nifty certification of low miles and other nice provenance items, and the car did seem like a time capsule, with all original weather gear, etc.\r\n\r\nThe original owner had passed away, and the estate manager was keen to sell his car collection in a fashion that any enthusiast would love to buy. The one flaw he felt the car had was that someone had changed the original banjo-type Bluemels steering wheel to an aftermarket wood-rimmed wheel. He insisted on sourcing a Bluemels steering wheel for the car and having it fitted, prior to shipping the car to me. I (of course) agreed, but asked if he would mind shipping me the cast off wooden steering wheel along with other spare parts.\r\n\r\nWhen I got the car, it was everything he had represented. I was interested in all the factory build details, so I ordered a Chassis Record from the Morgan Motor Company. Low and behold, under the \"Remarks\" section the original build record specified \"Wood Rimmed Steering Wheel.\" The steering wheel on this BaT car is a carbon copy of the factory optioned wood wheel that came with 5513. My guess is that this car was similarly optioned with a wooden steering wheel from the factory.\r\n\r\n@jt3: Very nice job in presenting the car, and I've enjoyed all the comments from knowledgeable Morgan enthusiasts from around the world. It was dispatched 14 Feb 1962 to Lew Spencer Imports, Los Angeles.\r\n\r\nBut Lew Spencer, a well known racer of the \u201cBaby Doll\u201d Morgans of the time was documented (\u201cSports Cars Illustrated,\u201dc.1958) as liking to dress up his cars with use of extra details and accessories. The original owner specifically commented to me that the wooden wheel was a detail he liked, and that it had come with the car. The car also came delivered to him with extra bright work in the engine bay (chrome plated valve cover, oil filler cap, dipstick, and brake reservoir cap), and two Lucas fog lamps (not the single one usually favored by the factory).
