Transmission recall just started last week (week of 1 April) in the U.S. to take care of a 3rd gear failure for certain manufacturing dates. Not sure if this one is on the list or not. Mine has not failed yet even with some track time, but I welcome the new one! The transmission issue is a much bigger deal than the shock tower. \r\n\r\nAll 981s and 991 GT3s share the same shock tower design. There are long threads on rennlist.com discussing it. The bottom line is if you hit an obstacle really hard in one of these lowered cars, the impact could fail the aluminum structure. It's unknown how many instances of this have occurred, but seems to me to be in the dozens. Not many when compared to how many cars are out there. Also, there's some recent discussion that one side could be more likely to fail. The left/right sides have some design differences. \r\n\r\nThere is a shock tower \"support\" available from Porsche Motorsport that comes on GT4 ClubSport racecars (maybe GT3 cup cars too). The support appears to be a safety device that prevents large displacement of the top of the shock in the event of a failure. To start with there's obviously not really anything I can complain about with either variant of the gt3. But I preferred the \"regular\" gt3 vs the RS simply because I liked the aesthetics of the gt3 more. In particular, I don't like the fender vents on the RS and the lack of them on the non-RS model IMHO makes for a cleaner, more classic 911 look. And after having spent significant time in both models I learned that the added aero in the RS wasn't going to be needed for my driving purposes (i.e. I wasn't going to be spending a lot of high speed track time and unless you're using it for that reason, I didn't notice a lot of difference.) I then went to compare the gt3 vs the Cayman gt4. In a nutshell, I was blown away. The gt4 felt more nimble and lighter on its feet than the gt3. Acceleration was fantastic, braking was superb and handling was terrific. As an owner of several AC Porsche's, the '16 gt4 felt more \"classic Porsche\" or even \"classic 911\" than the actual 911 from the same year! Again I'm not saying anything derogatory about the gt3's, but I think the gt4 is the best \"bang for buck\" Porsche currently available. \r\nWe could go on and on about some of the issues of the gt4. Having a family member dealing with the shock tower issue, I can tell you we've heard a hundred different ways Porsche is planning on/has already handled the issue and we've heard just as many ways individuals have decided to fix the issue themselves. And again FWIW, my brother's car broke after hitting a pretty innocuous seam in the road. He's been having a very open conversation with not only the dealership and Porsche N.A. but the bigwigs in Stuttgart as well and seems quite confident they'll come to a resolution. If not he's had some good plans from a few good indie Porsche shops on how to go about fixing it themselves. The point is he loves the car enough to go through all of this hassle to make it right. And as stated before, there's enough gt4's out there that the cars with issues makes up a pretty small number. But a prospective buyer should be doing his due diligence on this car (and of course any and every pre-owned car) and have a plan/budget in place to deal with any issues, in the slight chance it should happen. Too much of a late stage water cooled, soft on the edges, heavy 911. It feels *to me* like it\u2019s designed to be a very comfortable and gorgeous, road car.\n\nI\u2019ve been surprised to read posts describing a difficult decision between the GT3 and GT4. They are such different cars. I\u2019ve a couple of friends who own GT3s and we\u2019ve had spirited debates about the two cars but they don\u2019t track their cars and I don\u2019t often drive my GT4 on the street.\n\nPeople outside the Porsche world make fun of us for differentiating cars they see as pretty much the same. If you look at various sites around the country, you will find mostly dealers asking what are IMHO exorbitant prices. Of course we all know it doesn't really matter what someone asks for a car but for what price the car actually sells. I think BaT is a much better barometer of Cayman sales in all variants. I realize this car is somewhat unique in it's lack of miles, but I don't think the mileage will provide the significant value bump some might think. Pete Stout's car sold here last year for well under any of the prices I've seen on eBay, Auto Trader, etc. Since that car was not only perfectly spec'd but had about as much provenance as any 2016 car could get, I use it as my benchmark as far as Cayman gt4 values go. The rear suspension of the 981 GT4 is bespoke to the GT4, no other 981 has its parts. In fact, all the GT4 rear pcs have specific coded part numbers....I know because I own one.\r\n\r\nAs others have said, this is the most balanced car available today, every single damn drive is an event.
