This has been proven over on Xweb by several owners, unfortunately.\r\n\r\nTiming belts are an easy peasy maintenance activity done in an hour or two by a shade tree mechanic. Compared to the the \u201cnew and improved\u201d timing chain arrangements you could replace ten timing belts to one chain service. In 40 years of driving cars with timing belts in German and Italian cars, I have never had one fail and all have been easy to replace with no special tools to speak of.\r\n\r\nThat said, this is an interference engine, so regardless of what the past owner has done, I would replace the belt and the bearing upon purchasing the car. And his driving style didn't set well with a few Chief Stewards. I cannot remember the name of the driver/owner, but his catalog had some pretty cool stuff. Including a full factory Abarth racing engine for these Fiat's. There was also a Group 4 body kit. Big flares, and air dam. There was even a factory rear wing. Not spoiler, wing! We thought about building a IMSA GTU car using the X1/9. But then Mazda came along, and a different direction happened. There cannot be many really nice X1/9's left. This has to be one of the best. When I took ownership, there was some surface rust on each of the four wheel arches, but nowhere else. All typical problem areas (strut towers, windshield surround, rear boot & rockers) are all rust free. I took the car down to bare metal for the respray, just sanded the wheel arches down and applied small bits of filler to get them perfectly smooth. Then primed, paint and laquer at a local shop near my home in stock 1977 lime green. Interior was done a year ago by a small local shop that does mostly Alfas, ferraris, lambos and astons. The quality of the work is top notch. After market dashes are non-existant, and removing them is a very labor intensive job. What the upholsterer did do - and is not too evident in the pics - is add a matching black dash cover with green stitching, which really helps bring the interior together. Luggage racks were very common on these cars, and this is a factory original, so I chose not to remove it. Plus, the chrome rack complements the chrome bumpers, mirrors and window frames, so I chose to leave it. What else....? The car runs great. Everything works as it should. The windshield washer bag is under the front pop-up headlight in these early cars, and mine works fine. Wipers work, all lights work. Heat works. There is no radio or speakers. Along with the new seat upholstery, carpet and doorcards, the entire rear deck/firewall/parcell shelf has also been recovered. There is a spare tire (original), but no cover. These covers can be commonly found on ebay and other spares sites if the new owner sees the need to buy one. The engine bay was not repainted (removing the engine and drivetrain for painting is not very economical). Overall, this X1/9 is a joy to drive. I guess it\u2019s on its sixth owner by now, but I enjoyed it for 24 years, so it still feels like mine. First off, let me say that I DID NOT ADD THE GLASS ROOF PANEL. This was on the car when I bought it, I wasn\u2019t a big fan as it added weight and liked to drip on the passenger seat. I bought the car in 1981 from the second owner who bought it from a Fiat dealership. It had a new short block installed at the dealer, reason unknown, some front end body damage and I paid $1,800. It was solid, reliable and fun for all those years. The \u201cgreen Fiat\u201d was a good friend and I have many fond memories: NOLA to San Miguel de Allende, MX with a buddy, locals pointing, ogling like it was a Testarossa; Ansa quad exhaust I got from the factory and carted across Europe on my backpack; initiation into motorsports, 3 regional DSP AX championships, AROC track days at Grattan, MI; packed into U-Haul truck for move to MI are just a few. The car looks great, but I do prefer the original metallic green, more subtle interior and the 4 spoke BWA Sportstar wheels. The mechanical modifications I did are still there and I don\u2019t see much new other than an added fuel filter, springs, SS jounce hoses and new muffler replacing the Supertrapp on the IAP header. Although there were Koni inserts in the orange painted and Koni stickered strut housings, I sold the car with KYB inserts, which I actually preferred. A truly great car and well bought!
