Spare tire and firewall look like it started life Sage Green which was a common XJ6C color.\n\nThe majority of these (and they were built in relatively small numbers) have gone the way of the tin worm. The first place they typically rust is in the rear quarters just below the C pillars. This is because the lack of a B pillar usually meant a lack of a good seal at the window and that was where all the water collects. Finding a solid one is a rare thing indeed. I wish this wasn't all the way out in California but it is almost impossible to find one that isn't a rust bucket East of the Mississippi anyway.\n\nThe V8 swap IMO is not a horrible thing and you can go either way with this one; hot rod the V8 and add a modern tranny or source a Jag V6 (not that hard to do) and take it back old school. A local fellow to me here in CA has a silver XJ6C with a SBC and he\u2019s had all sorts of electrics issues due to the conversion. American power can be reliable, but matching the under hood wiring harness with the British under dash harness.....well, there can be issues! Mine has the stock U.S. spec bumpers as I wanted to keep mine original for show purposes. However, these can be converted to \u201crest of the world\u201d chrome bumpers-which do look much nicer. Costs a few thousand to do that, but the parts are available and some modifications are required for mounting. I believe SNG Barrett and other Jag vendors in England carry the parts. If the new owner replaces the shocks, I strongly recommend springing (yes, pun) for adjustable Gaz shocks front and rear. With a little thumbwheel, while installed, one can adjust for the ride desired. Most aftermarkets are way too stiff.\nNext concern would be the HVAC amplifier. It controls the automatic opening/closing of flaps to direct mix of air to keep set temperature. They fail and are no longer available. Would have to try used ones if you can find them.\nConverting this car to the Euro style bumpers is very easy in the back, however the front is a multi-day project. the front bonnet hinge mechanism mounts have to be changed. Trying to find the parts to execute this change is very difficult as where the boxes slide back into the \"frame\" area of the unibody car is prone to rust, thus even in the UK, they are hard to find. The bumpers are easy to locate and the front fenders are the same.\nI think the next step the new owner might consider is swapping the 3 speed auto to a 700r4 for the overdrive. Morale was bad. So quality suffered. \nThe electrical switches and wiring harness connections used in that era are prone to corrosion, thus causing electrical difficulties (not a morale problem). The switches on these cars are easily cleaned and rebuilt for reliability. The bullet harness connectors are readily available and a new owner should buy an assortment and replace all he can find on any part of the harness. Clean up the wire's bullet ends and install the new connectors.\nHowever, as mentioned in a prior post, there were two main reasons so many were converted to Chevy power. First, if the Jag engine, 6 or 12, suffered a head gasket failure or head warping, it was less expensive to convert to a Chevy where anybody anywhere could work on the engine. Contrary to popular notion, the AJV8 was a clean slate motor, and not a modified 260 or 283. One look at an actual AJV8 confirms that. My point is that V8 Jags were inevitable, and an absolute certainty once Ford came into the picture. I would love to have been present when the Ford guys started telling Coventry how to built a proper V8. \r\n\r\nI've driven these cars with stock 350s, LS1s, and the blown AJV8. While I personally will never understand why anyone would ever replace the smooth XK derived 4.2 in-line six with small block V8 (finesse vs brute force), the discussion is not relevant here as the swap is done, period. For long term value propositions you will need to swap it back, for driving it now, just accept that you buy parts at the local NAPA store and probably should stay away from JCNA events....\r\n\r\nInstead, it appears to be a very nice rust-free car with a beautiful well maintained interior (and those are not cheap nor easy to refurbish anyway you look at it, been there, done that) and a well-working A/C per seller. Add to this that Jaguar only made a tad over 10,000 XJC's over a 4 year period compared to at least 10 times as many 4 door XJ's. The C-version is one of the most attractive, iconic and classic coupes, no B-pillars, and thanks to a previous owner the vinyl roof is gone, leaving no one space less the ever hungry tin worms. \r\n\r\nYes, inboard rear brakes is a PIA when replacing rotors and pads, so are the complex dual gas tanks and ditto dual fuel pump complexity. But when driving you will instantly forget the trade off that these elements are for the fantastic driving dynamics. With its independent wishbones in all corners any XJ is a lot closer to a sports car (of its day) than a big sedan/coupe. Add to that the priceless cool factor when you center the car between two gas pump islands and pump gas from two pumps at the same time. Again, the low stance of the car would not allow for one big gas tank, which allowed the XJ to leave any German panzerwagen (Mercedes Benz) of same age in the ditch at the first sharp curve. \r\n\r\nFinally, on the not so elegant rubber bumpers, since the Ser 2 is based on the Ser 1 frame, I am almost sure you can fit the elegant bumpers from a Ser 1 sedan without a lot of efforts and you can still source those.\r\n\r\nThey don't - and never will - make cars this elegant again as computers and wind tunnels have long killed the soul of \"beauty \" in the classic car sense. Add that history has not treated the reliability of the XJs kindly (despite self-inflicted by the owners in most cases), maybe less than half have survived and your are looking at 5,000 of these cars left - globally. \r\n\r\nWith that in mind, this car seems to have everything going for it whether you are Jaguar purist/investor that want to convert it back, or you just want to enjoy her as is. So after no luck there I believe I can be almost certain that the original color was Greensand. The color inside the spare tire well in the trunk closely matches this color. The color used in the color change is a period correct color, British Racing Green. Also the car was completely stripped and the doors, hood and truck lid were removed and painted separately. This is probably when the Chevy engine and transmission were transplanted. The Jags two stage paint is high quality and in excellent condition. All the chrome on the car is also like new. I have also been told that the leather used on the seats is Connolly leather and the carpet is Wilton Wool carpeting. After long term storage I'd personally assume the normal logical TLC, a full run thru of all gaskets, rubber, brakes lines, fluids, shocks, tires, carb rebuild. But with that, I'd think you could just drive the hell out of this one. I find that with the right suspension set up withperiod correct tire size, make these cars great in canyons. At speed they are fast and nimble. Expect a big bill at first, but once sorted out super reliable.
