Several Ferraris, Lancias and Alfas had used the rear-mounted transaxle layout post-war before the 924 debuted. Packard actually used a rear mounted transaxle in a few models prior to the First World War(there's a Jay Leno's Garage episode where he talks about it in a Packard). It's really simple, just a spinning tube suspended on a few bearings. When you change a clutch, just commit to servicing the bearings. With that extra maintenance consideration taken care of, they're pretty darn robust.\n\n@KifH - Sort of. The 924 has a lot of parts that are a LOT cheaper than the equivalent on a post-'86 944. The control arms are from a VW Rabbit, so they cost $25-40 per side rather than several hundred. Suspension bushings are easier to replace all around(they're press-in type rather than molded in like the later cars). The engine is non-interference, and the parts for a timing belt and water pump change are sub-$200, rather than $500+. An OEM Porsche water pump for a 944 is EXPENSIVE, but the 924 pump is super cheap. The job itself is also much easier because the Audi four is phyiscally smaller, which makes for a roomy bay.\n\nIn terms of electrical frustration they're about the same. The 924 does have a manual sunroof, which helps resolve one of the most annoying parts of the 944.\n\nThere are some 924 parts that are harder to find(fuel dizzy parts, for example), but for the most part the 924 is cheaper and easier to maintain than the '44. This becomes even more true when you compare the 924 to the 944S or S2, which are even tougher to maintain, though certainly not impossible. I'm not really sure you can even compare the two 924's since the '87 S is considerably faster and better braked. That allows it to be \"competitive\" in daily driving traffic along side the texting teenage drivers and the distracted populace that are too busy with their phone to really operate an automobile. I find myself in the way quite a bit with the '79 due to it's mid '70's power output. You do have to plan your stops a bit as well with the old school VW brakes. \nSome parts for the 924 have become made of unobtainium, though there are vendors out there that have what it takes to keep them running. Be prepared to wait for certain things like brake boosters, fuel tank restorations, etc. as the specialty shops can service what is needed, but the lead times can be long. Both my 924's are a hoot to drive, especially the slow '79 with it's manual steering. Exceptional balance as well with the trans in the rear. \n\nI have a 1984 911 in a similar, if not identical, shade of paint to sample brown which was ordered to duplicate the standard issue '75/'76 Porsche color of Bitter Chocolate. I've yet to hear a negative comment on the color, even though there are enough out there that dislike brown cars. It's just '70's cool. \n\nThis 924 has some good eyeball in these colors and looks like a very well preserved early '24.
