This Camaro is basically bullet proof. Just what you want for a track car. Yes, it could be returned to street use. And you all know I like heavily modified street cars. This one would not be a good idea. It's been purpose built to do exactly what it's supposed to do. It would not be real fun on the street. Their run groups classes are sorted according to lap time break outs. If you run faster than your class break out lap time over a number of times (qualifying and race) you\u2019re automatically bumped to the next fastest class. Its all about managing whatever spec the car might have in conjunction with what skill level one might have (or not have). The only downside with this at tracks like Mosport is high horsepower cars in slower classes with rookie drivers blasting by everyone up the long backstraight, and then chickening out, over braking everywhere else and getting re-passed. There are no log books or anything like that because it has never raced in competition, though lot of money has been invested, and would probably kick a lot of rearend around the truck, because a lot of right stuff has been done to the car.\r\n\r\nIf everyone reads the auction, and watch my video, I call it a track car, not a full blown race car. So yes please do not think you are going to buy it, and go racing in a SCCA Historic race. Though, if someone wanted to take it to that level sure they could with some updating, because it has a lot of the right stuff for sure which would cost thousands of dollars to get into this condition mechanically. \r\n\r\nI will say this, he did build it right, he built it to handle great, a lot of thought went into this build, and it is faster then you know what, but with all that speed you got to be able to stop as well, the car is dialed in currently. Since he has been using it, he has never had to have the engine out of it, it is dialed in and as he has told me many times, why mess with it, it is perfect the way it is, pull it out of the trailer, and enjoy around the track for the last 10 years it has been an awesome machine. \r\n\r\nI do have some videos of it out on the track, but trying to convert them down, so shorter clips so you can see it out and about. The cage, which you can see goes into trunk, and engine compartment was built for the car, not a kit. It was on the track about a year ago. Someone made mention of the rubber on the tires, yeah it could be cleaned off, but one trip around the trick and all that loose stuff comes off, and after done racing, you pick up a bunch more, lol. After checking with 2 different Mechanics / Shop owners and the Engine assembler they all share the same opinion: Blue smoke usually means valve stem seals. Black smoke could be just carbon. They reiterated some of the facts re the car. It is a Track Car, using 110Leaded fuel and has a 9qt oil system. The warm up on a cold engine takes 15 min to reach operating temp. There is no choke. The engine runs rich, Startups last awhile and have a lot of fumes and carbon smoke. The valve stem seals possibly leak but the decision was made to not open up the engine as there is no negative effect to performance.\r\nDuring the 11 years of track use age it has averaged 3-4 events per summer. The car has also been started up, run and driven around town every 2-3 months otherwise.\r\nThe oil/filter has been changed religiously. There are 6 qts in the sump, 2+ in the line and almost a qt in the filter Fluids have been flushed and changed.\r\nFuel used has been VP110 leaded. The oil is Joe Gibbs HR1 15/50. But, personally, when I see a 1968 car that has been modified for track use, I certainly don't think of SCCA racing \u2013\u00a0and potential buyers shouldn't either. A car of this vintage would have to be built-up at great expense from the ground up to play in the SCCA arena (SCCA and NASA are for contemporary cars) arena (and some do). \n\nI think when a \"track-day\" prepared \"60's/70's era car is being sold, it should be sold as either a \"track-day car\" or a \"full-on VINTAGE race car.\" \n\nHere is where \"track day\" cars typically differ from cars that are legal and prepared to run in organized vintage racing. Vintage race cars need to have a fuel cell (no stock gas tank). Most clubs require an integrated fire suppression system (not just a fire extinguisher mounted on the floor). Also required are FIA or SFI certified racing seats, and an FIA or SFI certified harness. There are also rules about roll cage thickness, construction and configuration. And lots of vintage racing clubs have their own requirements about keeping original dashboards, door panels, original engine size, brakes and suspension pick-up points, wheel size, tire type and size. Also, the use of lightweight materials (fiberglass body parts, for example) are typically not allowed. (There are some exceptions to some of this \u2013 for example, some things are \"legal\" for a more advanced race group classification, but the primary idea in vintage racing is for a production cars to still look like the production car and still use the car's basic factory-built structure, flaws and all). Vintage race cars are allowed modifications of course, but there is a rule book \u2013 and the cars have to pass a tech inspection each race.\n\nNow, a \"Track Day\" car can do just about anything the owner wants \u2013 and this relates to both \"overboard\" and \"underboard\" (is that even a word?): there really are no rules, really. Put in a Coyote engine in a 1965 Mustang ? Fine. Carbon fiber body panels? Fine. Total custom, upgraded modernized suspension setup and/or brakes? Fine and fine. No fuel cell? Fine. One hand-held fire extinguisher? Fine. Cheaper, non-certified \"racing\" seats? A-ok. Stock seats? Also ok. Roll bar/roll cage \u2013 make it anyway you want. Hell, you don't even have to have one in the first place!\n\nSo think about these things when judging a \"track-day\" car to buy. Especially if you want to turn it back to a street car (NO street car should EVER have a roll cage, for example), and trust me, it is typically almost ALWAYS total folly to make an extensively track-prepared car to be a car you can \"drive to track\" \u2013 unless the track is 10 blocks away. You have too many compromises to make: all the mods made to make the car work on the track: the engine tuning, the brakes, the suspension, the tires (did I mention tires?) are all the thing that will make the car close to un-drivable on the street. On the street, the car will overheat, foul-out spark plugs, and might even be tuned to require race fuel. \n\nThe only cars that can pull off the \"dual purpose\" thing are really only cars that were designed to be hard core sports cars to begin with: Porsche, Lotus, Ferrari... The (vintage) big-bore American cars just need too high a degree of modification to work well on a road race track. Dual-puspose cars they are not. \n\nThe biggest thing that most people want to avoid in these situations is the much-feared trailer \u2013\u00a0because that turns the whole idea into something a whole lot more serious and involved. You gotta buy a trailer, you gotta buy a vehicle that can haul a trailer, you gotta store the trailer, you don't know how to use a trailer, etc, etc. But it does not have to be a bog deal!! Here are some tips: first off you probably already have an SUV anyway. If it doesn't have a tow hitch get one installed at UHaul. A few hundred bucks total. Next, just rent a car trailer from Uhaul. Unless you're planning to go to the track 10 time a year, why bother buying (and storing and maintaining) a trailer? UHaul baby!!! Hell, you can rent a truck there too to haul the trailer if need one. Allow the \"track day car\" to be a REAL track day car. And see where the experience takes you: maybe you'll have your own trailer and a leased shop with a lift after a couple years, or maybe not. There's no rule that says you have to go all-in when you start out. It is possible to keep it simple (in relative terms, of course). \n\nAnd maybe after a while, you want to go vintage racing. You can then turn your \"track-day\" car into a legal, vintage racing car, or sell the track-day car and buy a car that is already prepped properly for vintage racing, if your track-day car would need too much money to change it.)\n\nAs for this car \u2013\u00a0it looks like a great \"track day car\" that would be a lot of fun. Great color too. And this car is a pretty good platform to make into a legal vintage race car at some point.
