The original form of the GT40, which we need to acknowledge is a Cooper Lola invigorated with Ford corporate funding was one of the last intuitively streamlined speedsters of racing design (my simplified assertion) which is amply illustrated by the open cockpit adaptation to Can Am where it quickly assumed the persona of a Chapparral following the lead of that brilliant engineer (and aerodynamicist). Jumping ahead through subsequent decades we can see that truly scientific airflow turns out to be not only surprisingly unintuitive but potentially downright ugly. I actually enjoy kicking this football around since I usually learn something new almost every time. If you use the term \"GT40\" everybody knows what you're talking about so in that sense they are GT40s. On the other hand Ford never officially named the car GT40. @surf-n-drag came up with an interesting tidbit (something new learned) about GT40 in the serial number but that wouldn't necessarily make that the car's name. I have an Austin-Healey 100-6 which is sometimes referred to as a BN4 which is in the serial number but it's not the name of the car, it's a 100-6 which is labeled on the car in a couple of places. Other than Ford I can't really say what the official name of these cars are. One thing I do find puzzling is why Ford chose not to put the oval blue Ford logo anywhere on the car, I would have put a huge one on the hood or the roof.\r\n\r\nAnd just to toss one more log on this fire if you look at the photos of these cars actually racing in the '60s the only designation you'll see on any of these cars is \"FORD\" or \"FORD GT\". One of those, I don't remember which year exactly, was headlined as a GT40 convergence. (Yes, it's a legit designator). The convergence was stunning and I doubt if so many have been in one place at once before or since. Most were actively being vintage raced as well. Strolling the pits I came upon a gentleman crouched over the open rear clamshell of a green example who was blipping the throttle aggressively and I simply stood right behind the bundle of snakes trumpets exalting in the wash of sound and energy. He shut it down, stood up and grinned at me while I was probably embarrassing myself in my pants. In subsequent conversation he revealed he was an original Shelby Lemans race team member and engine tune specialist. When I got there he was balancing the Webers for some track time. One of my most favorite of so many carhead experiences in my lifetime. My deafness today might be related but I don't care. The 60s Ford racing history was characterized by win today and tomorrow and screw yesterday. Any association with that tidal wave today is beyond special and I don't think worth the quibbling about the timeline and the radical turns is relevant. The repairs of the tub were made by John Thompson at TC prototypes in England using J9 as its pattern and measurement car.Both J9 and J10 tub were returned to the Agapiou brothers. After the the car was purchased from Marty Yacoobian we sent J10 to Ken Thompson in North Carolina for the engine and transaxle to be fitted into the chassis. If you know Peters company, ERA, and the cars they\u2019ve built for the last 40 years, you know the pride they take in accuracy and obsessive detail. This J car benefits from that obsession, and the love lavished on this is expressed in the details\u2026like the sourcing and installing the correct aluminum tunnel port heads, the correct intake manifold, and the \u201cbundle of snakes\u201d exhaust that sits atop the 427 built exactly as original. Even the unusual upholstery on the driver seat is correct original. And personally, I also find great value in the original parts the car still retains, like the complete suspension, original wheels, steering rack, dry sump lubrication, as well as the original, not reproduction, T-44 gearbox and bell housing. I was at Amelia in 2018 when the car was shown on the show field for the first time and watched as it became a huge focal point of interest. Why? Because this car has \u201cpresence\u201d A beauty and presence that is incredibly compelling and impossible to ignore. And when the engine was lit up, the music from that 427 Ford also lit up the crowd who gathered to watch\u2026and listen. This J car could easily be the crown jewel of any collection.
