This is as good as it gets. Superformance builds the best modern GT40. This is as good as the original. The attention to detail is second to none. This is exactly what John Wyer and his team ran in 1968-9. The #6 car won Le Mans in both years. I believe it is the only car that not only won twice, but back to back. The chassis was #1075. That car has been hiding in some one's collection for decades. I do not believe it has even seen daylight in that time. That I'm by no means sure of. If anyone knows more, please post it here. Now, the second Gulf-Ford Wyer campaigned was #1084. That did great service for the Team. It finished second, and third in a number of events over the two years, including third behind #1075 at Le Mans in 1969. It sold privately in 2008 through Duncan Hamilton for somewhere north of $5,000,000. One can only guess what #1075 would sell for, IF it ever came to market. So, our subject car here is quite cheap compared to the real ones. There have been a few other GT40's with racing history that have sold recently. Still in the seven figure bracket. Just not at Gulf Team numbers. I saw two GT40's race at Sebring in a historic race WAY back when. The snarl from the 289's was absolute heaven. The rod change of a ZF 5DS25 is like a bolt-action rifle when properly set up- quick, direct and precise. \n\nThe early ZFs were infact fitted to racing GT40s; they were a huge improvement over the Colotti gearboxes which I think only had four speeds and were prone to breaking up with the SBF engines. The 427 cars were fitted with Ford-built transaxles which were even more robust, but the winning GT40s in 1968 and 1969 (1075 both times) had this transaxle. \n\nThis transaxle was also used in Mangustas, Maserati Boras, and the BMW M1, for which it was improved. They are great units- very strong, lots of ratios available, and tough enough for a 24 hour race. Or a hugely built up Ford Cleveland in a Pantera. They are also expensive, but they should be.\n\n1075 used to belong to Rob Walton- he bought it from Harley Cluxton who got it from Gulf Oil when the racing programme was ended. I saw it race at Laguna Seca in 2003. Brian Redman up, reeling everyone in like they weren't moving. If you hsve never sat in a GT40, you have missed out on a lot of history. I met Bill Wonder, who owned 103, the first GT40 to ever win a race, and spent the day with him and went all over the car, before I owned one. This accurate reproduction of the vehicle chassis is good enough for a few real GT40 owners to keep one as a spare, just in case something untoward happens. The roof is one bit steel stamping, just as the factory did on the originals, and the thing is spot welded together the same way, with the same number of parts and all the pierced metal panels that you can't see. \r\n\r\nThis is not a tube frame replica, with a body shaped like a GT40 draped over it. It is a GT40 monocoque of series production built on new tooling. \r\n\r\nYou can get a RHD/RH shifted version, with the correct shaft/U Joint shifter (the original cars racers were RHD), or a center tunnel cable/turret shifter in LH or RH drive. These are quite a bit different than the usual tube frame ERA copy, or one of the heavy stainless CAV monocoques that didn't follow the original GT40 blueprint. \r\n\r\nOne major Superformance difference is the fuel tanks, which half size, meaning that it holds 20 gallons rather than the 40 or so of the original cars. This leaves some crush space in the rockers before the tanks are crushed. The tanks are also made of stronger materials. I imagine that you could have the original sized 20 gal/side tanks installed if you wanted something \"more original\". \r\n\r\nThe idea that \"no two were the same\" really has to do with detail stuff; installation details for the power plant, switch placement and perhaps wiring. The monocoque, sub frames were essentially the same, being built on jigs and using GT40 specific tooling on customer cars. \r\n\r\nI imagine that the uprights are a little different, as are the brakes (Wilwood, as opposed to the original Girling alloy units), as these pieces might not be cast, but rather CNC machined. I retain the car to this day. I have also driven original gt40s and know how those feel. The recreations from Superformance, CAV and ERA are as close as one can get. Lots of interesting stuff down there. Anything that comes to the Museum, be it Museum collection or exhibited by another collector, gets vault time prior and after museum floor display. Tours of The Vault are available. \r\n\r\nAs for driving the GT40 on the road, there are some things to think about. \r\nFirst, the windows don't roll down. A/C is mandatory on the road. The original GT40 had an effective vent system that even circulated air around the seats, and kept the windshield clear, but it is not part of the Superformance car. A/C is installed, and it works well, integrated into the vent system. \r\n\r\nGetting in and out is fine if you can get the doors all the way open, as then you can step on the seat and drop down into the cockpit. However, this doesn't work if the car is in a parking spot and you can't open the door all the way. THEN, you have to snake your way out of the 40\" high cockpit, which is hard to do, even if you are 4'10\". The door really needs to be all the way open, otherwise, you might be trapped. \r\n\r\nThe steering is surprisingly light once rolling, and the clutch/gearbox work nicely. The throttle can be touchy, depending on how the cable and linkage were set up. \r\n\r\nIt's a bit intimidating, being low (Not that much of a problem, really. I drive a Lotus 11 on the road, and it's an inch lower than the GT40), and very wide (more of a problem the first time through the canyons). Vision to the rear is about \"super car\" average, which is to say, not so good, but the view out the front is panoramic and precisely what you need to strafe an apex. \r\n\r\nThese cars are about half a ton lighter than a modern Porsche and most have over 450 HP, so they are quite quick, and have immediate responses. \r\n\r\nWith the low ride height, some speed bumps might as well be mountains, but there is always a special sense of occasion when driving it. Anyway, the ride height is adjustable so perhaps a Targa Florio setup might be better than say, LeMans. It doesn't have to be .25\" off the ground to handle. \r\n\r\nI spend about a week with one back east with the distributor, and found it to be a competent road car, so long as you know your route, and avoid speed bumps. The surprise was the ride on the bespoke Bilstein dampers and properly matched springs. But it has not been dumbed down. I will be posting it today. \r\n\r\nTwo things I noticed while driving I\u2019d like to share with bidders. 1) the plexiglass between the cockpit and motor vibrates at a specific rpm at full throttle. You might hear it in the video. 2) first gear is tricky to find, but once you drive it a little it\u2019s no problem. Typical ZF RBT. The linkage could probably be messed around with to improve this. \r\n\r\nIn the video I tried to turn everything on so you could see the wipers running etc... The A/C was on the whole time although not noticeable in the video. You might also hear a clunky sound under hard acceleration - I left a phone mount in the passenger side door pocket during the drive, so that\u2019s just the noise of it sliding around. They are radials and drive, handle and ride just outstanding and the tire of choice for GT40 owners in Europe! As far as the oil drip in the pan a lot of these cars have some. I eliminated the breather issue with a P/C valve system that goes into a catch tank and fumes burn off in the exhaust pipe that works extremely well. Actually looks pretty neat also.
