Compared to a Ford Raptor, MPG for this Ducati is better to the extreme. Compared to a Honda Grom, its the reverse. Years ago, I sold \r\na M.C. to my neighbor who commuted 100 miles a day to & from work. He thought he would save a ton of money on gas. He did, but I tried to explain to him that all that savings would go to replacing tires. People new to cycling assume M.C. tires wear like auto tires.\r\nVery quick learning curve on that matter. You will not care about MPG when you here the\r\nsound of a Ducati twin with the proper exhaust. But, that will be your \"Sport\" bike.\r\nThen you will need a long distance \"Touring\" bike. A \"Dual Sport\" bike and at least a couple\r\nbikes you think are just \"Cool\". My wife wonders why I need so many M.C.`s.\r\nMy reply is \"Why do you need so many purses\" ? I went to look at my Multistrada not knowing what it really was. I had to ride it over the guy's lawn to get to the street for a test ride. By the time I got to the street, I was grinning. Took it on a 20-minute ride and the grin never left my face. Which kind of hurt, but I digress.\n\nI started on dirt bikes as a kid, then went to sport bikes (600-750cc inline-fours and V-twins) when I got my license. Never had any desire for a dual-sport (not that the Multistrada is really a dual-sport), much less a large-displacement engine, but this bike is magical. Or, it can be. I bought mine as soon as I got back from the test ride, but it's kind of rough-looking, so I went to look at a \"nicer\" one a few weeks later. Felt like a totally different bike. Suspension was way lower, mainly by shoving the fork tubes up into the triple clamps, so that's probably why. When I was much younger, I bought the first year Multistrada 1000DS. I intended to use it as a sport tourer, but in reality it became my commuter. My typical round trip from home to work was 50 miles. On weekends it was anything goes, many roads indeed. \r\n\r\nThe day I bought it, the dealer sent me out on two previous test rides before I threw a leg over the Multistrada. I'd gone to the shop intending to buy the Ducati ST3 sport tourer, but it wasn't comfortable enough for the long haul with my carpal tunnel afflicted wrists. Next was the BMW GS, and while it was very comfortable, I wasn't enthused with the boxer engine. I was ready to leave when the salesman said, \"What about the Multistrada?\" I said, \"I've read the test, it doesn't make enough power.\" He told me not to ridicule the bike without a test ride, the torque is good, and it hits hard off the bottom. He was right, I liked it immediately. Reminded me of a former test ride on a VFR 800. \r\n\r\nOne of the best days was at Portland International Raceway, where the local Ducati dealer hosted a track day for its customers. As an added bonus, racing champion Doug Polen was on the track to show us street riders how it's done. It's very humbling to be going almost 100 MPH and braking for the corner at the end of the straightaway, and to be passed by Polen like you're standing still. The perspective is much different from the seat of a bike, than from a seat in the stadium. \r\n\r\nBut as its name implies, Ducati didn't build the Multistrada for the racetrack. It's a phenomenally good street bike, and very comfortable with the upright ergonomics. Most of my fifty years on motorcycles was spent on Japanese machines; primarily Yamaha and Honda. I was trying to describe the magic of Ducati's handling to a friend. The mileage is about 45mpg in normal sporting riding. If you are traveling faster than 75 on the highway it reduces drastically but can get 250mi to a tank. I bought mine because my 916 was too uncomfortable for touring and I wanted something technologically simple. While it only has 95hp, it is plenty. I've ridden mine 600+ miles in a single day with no discomfort.\n\nOne thing I strongly advise is to have the front fork revalved and respring. It is terrible from the factory and makes a LARGE difference on handling and comfort once redone. It needs a stiffer spring, less high speed compression dampening, more low speed compression dampening. I used Traxxon Dynamics in GA.\n\nI can remap the ECU directly through the diagnostics port. There isn't a \"Chip\" that can be replaced so the Power Commander must be a piggyback (know nothing about it). WIth the factory programming it has some rough spots. The Ducati Performance mapping is pretty good. I tweaked mine based on my specific bike.\n\nThis bike is a true all around bike, although I wouldn't take it on anything worse than gravel roads. Keep the timing belts replaced every 4 years, valve service every 6k and you'll have minimal service requirements. Belts can be done by an owner with normal hand tools in about 45min.\n\nDO NOT run ethanol fuel in it or the tank will swell and can swell to the extent that it will break the seal where the fuel pump is and spill fuel over the engine (usually hot).
