Oh, and the Monte Carlo 17\" OEM wheels I added later. And the OEM alu-silver interior trim and OEM black leather shift knob. And the European headlight switch that let me roll with parking lights + fogs only. Ballin! Yeah, I look good crusin by those big, reflective storefront windows. Hnnnngh. Ahhhh, fun indeed. Just don't rush the 1-2 shift.\r\n\r\nUnfortunately mine was not without a host of mechanical and electrical issues from a young age that also seemed to plague a large proportion of the Mk IV cars (at least based on posts on VWVortex, and the selected extended warranties granted by VW).\r\n-- Failed ignition coil pack. Raw gas smell = damaged cat, replaced under warranty at least. VW also warrantied me a new coil pack. Which quickly developed the same problem. DIY fixed it for good with JB-Weld.\r\n-- Numerous failed window regulators that led to soggy squishy footwells, and sunroof drains that had a tendency to clog [[Hmmm, that sounds like sloshing water back there..... splashdown! from the top of the C-pillars as I was leaving part 1 of game 5 of the 2008 world series in Philly after the deluge]]. Eventually did a DIY down-to-the-metal interior removal and carpet pad replacement, after clipping the ends of the sunroof drain tubes, getting all metal window clips, and applying silicone sealant around the accessory panel.\r\n-- Failed mass air flow sensor ( --> failed emissions test). Reimbursed by VW under extended warranty.\r\n-- Leaky thermostat housing from the factory (BEEP! STOP! CHECK COOLANT!). DIY replacement.\r\n-- Fast-wearing intake manifold shifter rod bushings (rattle rattle). DIY replaced with Gruvenparts bushings. Then eventually had to replace the manifold (not DIY, for me).\r\n-- Broken glove box hinge courtesy of the oh-so-sophisto (and excessively stiff) damping cylinder. Replacement required removing the entire center console. DIY at least.\r\n\r\nAll that and I still hugged it tightly before the new owner put it on a trailer to take it to its new home. Maybe I even shed a tear (or it was something in both eyes). Yes, it always was a fun and willing (if not very trustworthy) partner. I only occasionally think about how I could've had an Integra Type-R for marginally more.... But dat VR6!\r\n\r\nAs noted already, rear valence on this one is not the original style -- exhaust tips were turned downward and valence was solid all the way across until the 2002.5 engine refreshes. And that upgrade for the 1.8T was to 180 hp not 200 hp (as rated at least, not that it matters here). I wonder if we'll see any 1.8T vs. VR6 sparring.....\r\n\r\nApologies for TLDR. I don\u2019t think GAP still carries those parts, but a few other vendors have billet crack pipes. Combined with a low-temp thermostat they\u2019re a big help with VR6 cooling woes.\r\n\r\nVW did update the window regulators at one point, but I don\u2019t think that had a big impact on the failure rate. VWs and window regulators didn\u2019t get along well even in crank window cars. The R32 has been almost trouble free... the only problems were window clips and the coil packs that were fixed under warranty. The 12v VR6 cars had the same window clip issues, along with coolant leaks associated with the thermostat housing. The GTI had an electrical issue that caused tail light fuses to keep blowing. Finally tracked that down to cracked wiring in the upper left corner of the hatch. The driving difference between the GTI and R32 was basically that the R32 just felt sharper in cornering and acceleration...and of course the R32's all wheel drive was a huge difference driving in the snow.\r\nThis GTI looks very nice... The early models had more cool features including Climatronic auto AC, auto-dimming rear mirror and rain sensing wipers (I'm not even sure new GTIs have these) plus expanded wood accents. 2001 brought the 4 spoke wheel with audio mounted controls, They started decontenting and removing these features from the MKIV from around 2002 until the end of the lifecycle. Euro models were even nicer with leather recaro seats front and rear. MkIVs also came in a cool v5 version with one cylinder lopped of the vr6.\n\nMost of these are pretty trashed or thin on the ground now. It's a Golf GLS 1.8T 5-speed, which they sold very few of. When it was still under warranty, even the service writers at the VW dealership would say things like, \"A 4-door turbo with a stick? We never see those!\" I basically made it into a 4-door GTI, with take-off stuff from GTI's via eBay and Craigslist. Suspension, 3-spoke steering wheel, 17\" Monte Carlo wheels, and sport seats out of a Wolfsburg Jetta. He has kept two in his arsenal for as long as I can remember (and still does). He would have one VW (still cherished) that he would drive in any weather, and another that he would keep for only the best of the best days. This GTi GLX was the keeper for the best days. It had its own garage stall dedicated to keeping it nice. The professor always had it maintained immediately when it needed anything (that led to the multitude of documentation bits shown in one of the photos). The paperwork is fantastic to page through. Every stitch of related data still accompanies this car. When the professor revealed the actual showroom poster to me, then the pen used on the contract, all of the brochures window sticker & the other bits I was shocked in the care that he took to keep it all perfectly bundled out of sheer respect for this little car. It was that special to him, and immediately became that special to me & my family. \n\nIt is a time warp. Just like stepping back to Y2K. Like auto-rear wiper if you slide into reverse after even a number of seconds after shutting the wipers off. Fortunately the built quality on the MkVI is impeccable. Everything still works after 150K. But on old cars auto-everything is not good. That's that stuff that goes and is expensive to fix. Trip 1 would reset automatically after the car was off for something like 10 minutes, while Trip 2 could only be reset manually (well, according to the manual it would reset automatically if it exceeded a trip time of 99h 59min as I recall). Switching between Trips 1 and 2 was done by pressing the button on the bottom of the wiper stalk; hold that button for a few seconds and it would reset whichever trip was being shown.\r\n\r\nThe MFA trip computer is completely separate from the simple/single trip odometer below the main odo. I used to reset Trip 2 and the trip odometer at every fill-up after recording all the info to keep track of fuel economy, average speed, etc. in an Excel sheet. All 3 were made in different countries - the GLX (this car above) from Wolfsburg, the 337 came from Brazil, and and the R32's were made in Bratislava, Slovakia. All 3 had completely different characters. My recollection of the GLX was how nose-heavy it drove, and I could never make it handle well, despite adding aftermarket suspension and better rubber. The wood trim was a really weird choice by somebody in product planning and didn't suit the car at all. Everybody went through one or more window regulators on their Mk4's, as noted by others. But I think the styling has aged really well, and this car in particular looks fantastic with the R32 bodywork and well-preserved Flash Red paint, which had a tendency to fade easily, but this still looks great many years later. The R32 was another beast altogether, and didn't have the nose-heavy feeling somehow, perhaps the AWD helping dial it out.
