Most multi-use BMWs do everything well but not perfectly. The S is a pretty good commuter, track bike and tourer.\r\n\r\nBut that seat is pure torture after about 100-miles. But it is a great track seat; it\u2019s narrow and as K8 says keeps one up on the tank.\r\n\r\nKeep the TB\u2019s sync\u2019d or you\u2019ll get buzz through the bars and pegs (those Throttlemeisters do help attenuation).\r\n\r\nThe jump lugs save 40-minutes and broken fairing hangers when it comes time to jump start the S. Cold bump-start is impossible. Sargent is wide, Corbin even wider. I\u2019ve had all three. I too am inseam challenged. Short legs put much more stress on the seat cover with feet down-most S seats crack along the inseam-line. That\u2019s why so many aftermarket seats are found on ridden S\u2019s.\r\n\r\nI ride a BCR which is even taller. The seat is still just as uncomfortable. The '99s suffered from what was called BMW surge. It was really a stumble, because BMW mapped the fuel mixture too lean. I re-chipped my bike, which helped. The problem was corrected in later years. I owned my R1100s for about 6 years and put 40K on the bike. I called it my rapid transit machine, because it could really cover ground. The bike could cruise at 110 all day or for as long as you could get away with it. The torque on these bikes is very impressive. The Corbin seat helps to keep your ass from flying off of the back at maximum acceleration. The brakes are also awesome. \n\nBut there were also things about the R1100s that I didn't like. Owning previous BMWs had spoiled me with their ease of service. My K75s was such a joy to work on. So I was surprised at how difficult every service was except valve adjustments and spark plug removal. If BMW wanted to build a difficult bike to work on, this would be it. You can replace the fuel filter on a K75 in about 15 minutes, but it takes hours on this bike. But if you have the patience to work on it and the lean mapping has been corrected, they are great fun to ride. I recommend getting the BMW hard bags for this bike. While the tank is off, get the ABS control rebuilt and fresh brake lines. Also, the clutch slave cylinder is likely to be ready to fail due to age, make sure to replace before failure. Once the cylinder fails, you have to R&R the clutch but in advance of failure, far less work.\r\n\r\nThis bike has not only the bars raised but moved rear wards as well, huge help for long rides.\r\n\r\nOhlins suspension, that alone is worth the price of entry.
