An OEM engine replaced the original engine that suffered a seal leak that caused oil to leak into the crankcase. A full rebuild was offered by the Audi dealer at a cost of $16,000.00. The engine had 81,000 miles when it was installed by the Audi dealer who said it has excellent pressure. The timing belt was replaced at the same time the engine was installed. And after having owned four other Audi\u2019s of this era (1993-1998) there was a high degree of familiarity with how the transmission should shift and the original one was shifting in a way that is difficult to explain in writing when upshifting between 2nd and 3rd gears. It also intermittently would not upshift and would hold onto a gear past 4,000 RPM without pressing the accelerator enough to make it do that deliberately. When the transmission was replaced, it confirmed the suspicion the original one was not shifting as designed and as the four other ones owned from this era had. The previous seller said it sat for an extended period of time because it was owned by an elderly relative and sitting is more than likely what caused the issue(s). Unfortunately, the Audi dealer does not do transmission rebuilds or individual transmission repairs and only they are allowed to touch the car which is why a replacement was done. The vehicle has been driven a few hundred miles since both were replaced and they are both working as designed. (There was a manual trans version available for these as well). It\u2019s design type that has been on the long path to extinction. I had a Green on Ecru from 2002-2012. I drove my 5 children and wife in it to many years of ice hockey and winter adventures with snow tires. (I haven\u2019t used my Thule roof box since!). I had the same transmission problem toward the end and had to shift into low to start off before it worked normally 2nd gear up. I replaced the fluid and valve body but that didn\u2019t fix it. I know that latch points exist. I installed an S6 back seat and wired up seat heaters for my older kiddos in mine. Ultimately the S6 Avant is the keeper but with these latest repairs this one is a special vehicle for the right buyer. There are also functional mods you can make to these with VAG COM thru the OBD II port. Also for what it\u2019s worth, I wrote to Audi and asked about rear impact safety.
