For sure a surprise seeing this here. One of my first cars was, coincidentally, a '90 Mexi Beetle! Some \"you-had-to-be-there\" trivia for bidders:\n* This has the 'refreshed' square switches in the dash (consistent with the November 1990 sale date). Earlier '90 cars had round pull knobs. I guess this is also why it has the 'luxury' 4 arm steering wheel, vs the 2-arm earlier one.\n* It's carbureted, but ignition is electronic, so these are quite reliable.\n* the 4 wheel non-self-adjusting drum brakes aren't... reliable, that is ;-) If I am still walking this earth, it's not thanks to them, but in spite of them.\n* I'm not sure if the bumpers are original, these are \"wide\" stripe bumpers, most cars had the narrow stripe bumpers. This was a common 'upgrade'. I could be mistaken, though, VW would use anything they had to keep churning out cars.\n* At this time, this was the best selling car in Mexico. The Puebla plant would run one color for large batches (months?), so you'd always see 'waves' of new cars of the same color roaming around cities.\n* The cracks in the dash in the bottom corners of the glove box door are original equipment. There was no way to prevent them.\n* Most of the body panels are hot rolled steel! (as opposed to such 'modern' technology like much thinner, typical cold rolled steel).\n* IIRC, there's a hose missing from the air filter (see Photo 71). I *think* this was to preheat the carburetor or something. It's trivial to replace and does not appear to affect anything, but it's always missing because it always gets in the way.\n* Not to be a hipster but I was 'drifting' these before anyone outside Japan even knew what drifting was, LOL. I\u2019m amazed at how little has changed on this standard model \nas compared to a great many years of standard beetles ! Still 4 wheel drum brakes, the same front suspension, dashboard, even the radio was way outdated long before 1990. BUT it offers the fun and the charm of virtually any standard beetle from the sixties forward. I think the only relatively \u201ccurrent\u201d part of this car is the fuel injection that was used from 1975 onward. I didn\u2019t look but I would wager quite a bit of money that this bug still uses the spare tire pressure to make the\nwindshield washer operate. I think what surprises me the most is that there still isn\u2019t a right hand side, door mirror in 1990. I now have to think that this is how the last production year of standard beetles came from the factory at the very end of any standard model production. It has very little mileage on it as well. Quite a rare opportunity to be able to bid on a such a late production beetle from 1990. There is so little mileage on\nthis beetle. There must be an unusual back story on this beetle. I had a 1990 Mexican Beetle as my daily driver from about 2002-2015. I paid $3200 for it with 30,000 miles on it. It was like a nearly new car. I drove it every day, street parked it in Chicago. The Mexican Beetles had heater boxes with far fewer fins than German cars, which, combined with the fact that they omitted the rear seat heat outlets, made the heater and defroster volume excellent, but at a lower temperature. I added an Espar gas heater which helped to make it a great winter car-almost unstoppable in the snow.I drove it to Arizona when I moved there, and used to take it off roading. I drove it to a multitude of areas in the USA, and it made the trip when I moved back to Chicago. It was an excellent car that never let me down. I did add extra interior insulation to keep it quieter, and upgraded to a freeway flyer so it was more relaxed at 75-80mph, which it had no problem doing. It was starting to look really ragged after all those years and about 135,0000 or so miles of very hard driving, but it still ran great, and I sold it to a girl going to college for $3200.", "likes": 0, "timestamp": 1630642535, "type": "comment"}]
