I persuaded my wife that a four-seater would offer double duty to take our then young kids out for family outings, as we had done with a four-seater Triumph (Vitesse) for a period, including (trailered) to Nationals in Colorado one year. We had been active in local MG and/or Triumph clubs and always had an example of one or even both marques. \r\nHowever my subsequent work roles required considerable out of town travel each week and even out of country. When I was home, our weekends were focused on kids' sports, boy scout campouts, expeditions and Eagle projects, etc. and homework. We even moved a couple of times. The Morgan moved from the garage and then in a storage unit, only being driven occasionally to keep it running. \"Laziness\" prompted the use of whichever MG or Triumph were now in the garage (especially for related club or concours events after the boys went to college) rather than a trip to swap for the Morgan in storage. I also fell into the restorations of an MG and then a Triumph.\r\nWe moved cities for one role and when completed and we returned a couple of years ago I got the Morgan out and began to prep it for use only to find contract work out of the country or town each week. \r\nWhile still paying off expenses of two sons' universities and with an accumulated surplus of LBCs and associated storage costs, with the advent of COVID my contract opportunities also dried up. \r\n\r\nAs my wife likes to remind me, I can only drive one classic at once (the MG is her favorite), and some i.e. the mini and Morgan were being used very infrequently ..... Contrary to the factory measurements, the rear seat bottom/platform is 14\" above the rear floorboard and top of the thick seat cushion is at 17\". Thanks.", "likes": 0, "timestamp": 1616438225, "type": "comment"}, {"id": 5937597, "authorName": "LBCfan (The Seller)", "authorUrl": "https://bringatrailer.com/member/lbcfan/", "bidAmount": 0, "content": "Performance:\r\n\r\nI am not a Morgan expert and so will defer to those more authoritative observers on the finer points of respective Morgan models' performance but what attracted me to this model and version as a \"family man\" was its value proposition of getting a versatile four-seater with closer to Plus 8 performance (not available in pure Plus 8 spec, except for a factory one-off example) than a traditional Plus 4 but for closer to Plus 4 money --- and thus spousal approval! \r\n\r\nAllow me to highlight a few aspects of the 138 bhp Rover-engined Plus 4 model as compared to the better-known earlier (traditional 90bhp-104 bhp Triumph engined) Plus 4 and (155 bhp US-spec, Rover V8) Plus 8 models, since some readers may not be as familiar with the factory's Rover engined Plus 4 model.\r\n\r\nAfter Triumph stopped producing its 2,138 cc engine as fitted to the TR4A in the late 1960's, Morgan had dropped the Plus 4 model (with around 3,800 produced with TR engines?), then reintroduced it in the 1980s, initially with a Fiat twin-cam engine and then in 1988 with the Rover M16 - a 1,994 cc twin cam 16 valve multi-point fuel injection engine producing 138 bhp at 6,000 rpm and 131 lb ft of torque at 4500. A contemporary 1988 Autocar test achieved a top speed of 109 mph and a very respectable 0-60 mph in 7.7 seconds. I can attest that this car is pretty quick and handles like it is on rails.\r\n\r\nIt thus represented the opportunity for me that it still presents to today (IMHO) to get a very quick (for most fast road purposes) and also very versatile four-seater versus a more traditional Triumph engined variant or historically far more expensive (and 2-seats only) Plus 8 model.\r\n\r\nBTW, for comparison purposes: it had only 10% less BHP than the early +8s that were rated at 155 hp in US spec models and only a second quicker from 0 to 60. I really wanted to go that route, but just couldn't swing it. It would have been quite competitive in Cprod. These things really go! I have one question. Does the handbrake work? The brake system was recently flushed and new rear brake pads and new rear wheel and master cylinders were fitted. \r\nThe original brake master cylinder (included as a spare in case wanted by new owner) was leaking and was replaced with a new one and, even though only the left rear wheel cylinder was also leaking, I also had them replace both rear wheel cylinders with new ones. Each seat is separately adjustable by reaching down and using a small lever that's under the seat cushion at the front of seat. \r\n\r\nIt then slides fore and aft - I haven't measured it but I'd guestimate a good 6\" or more of range which gives flexibility in sizing for front and rear passenger legroom [see my earlier post to a related question]. \r\n\r\nIn addition, mine also has the optional reclining seat backs (possibly specific to the four seat models?) so you can really adjust both front seats for a good position. I'm 5'6\" and 29-30\" inseam and can fit comfortably with good space for a passenger behind me. I have included several pictures of the wood and framework where readily visible \u2013 e.g. the wood in/behind the rear seats seems to be in excellent condition. The floorboards seem sound/solid, but their underside show some staining and effects of weather (possibly thrown up from road).\r\n2.\tThe CHASSIS was POWDER-COATED; some were also galvanized as an optional extra and, per factory ledger that its directors kindly shared with me when visiting, some received \u201dunderseal\u201d (a listed option) or \u201crustproofing\u201d. My own example was therefore at a minimum powder-coated, and although it received most of the other core factory options / extras, I have no documentation as to whether or not it also received any of the other optional additional anti-rust measures.\r\n3.\tAn EXPOXY POWDER-COATING was applied to bulkheads, valances, brackets, certain small fittings. As mentioned for purposes of full disclosure, there is/was some rust visible in places on the undercarriage and/or fittings. This appears to be primarily of a surface nature but am happy for anyone to inspect it in person. I have attached numerous pictures including from when it was on lift with wheels removed to have tires replaced or other work done. I did a test on some fittings/brackets with rust visible and was able to remove the rust coating easily with a wire brush; I then primed and repainted the bare metal in black. \r\n4.\tTWO-PACK (ICI 2K) replaced the earlier models\u2019 cellulose paint and, in addition to the cowl and hood always so painted separately, the BODY, WINGS and DOORS were also now PAINTED SEPARATELY \u201cOFF\u201d the car \u2013 which also allowed customers to spec the car with contrasting color piping as piping was fitted after wings had been painted. The paint on my car is in great condition. Although I have not specifically waxed nor professionally detailed the paint, its quality is arguably reflected (literally, pun intended) in the reflections visible in several of the pictures in the gallery. For disclosure: a crack appeared in the LHS wing where the headlight cowl is attached to the wing and which I possibly caused by parking quickly one time at an angle on an albeit sloping sidewalk. At a LBC club driving event and gathering, the host, a fellow Morgan owner, showed me the very same crack phenomenon on his car and several other Morgan present. After a decade or two, it cracks. \r\nJust about every Morgan has cracks in this area, or it will have. \r\n\r\nThe handbrake is pretty easy to test. It works, or it doesn't. Adjustment is easy, and you can do it from above. Mine worked just fine until the cable broke at the lever, beneath the car. I replaced the cable, leaving the sheath in the car. It was easier to put in a fresh cable than trying to remove the entire cable/sheath assembly. \r\nQuick note: Adjust the rear brakes with the hand brake disconnected at the drums before attempting to adjust the . Then, reattach the cables, and adjust the hand brake. This will keep the hand brake adjustment from interfering with the actual brake shoe adjustment, and ensure that the hand brake has its full authority to hold the car on a hill. Also, your brake feel and pedal travel will be improved. Again, you can adjust the brakes without removing the wheels, from above, if you just jack up the rear of the car. No lift needed. \r\nHood straps are Weird? This was an accessory for most long hood cars of the era of the +4s design. Not all Morgans have them, and some owners add them later. Hood straps were also required for racing with some clubs and the FIA. \r\nI have a hood strap on mine, but I think that it looks better without it (while also looking naked...). I paid extra for a new hood strap with a sheepskin backing when I bought the car, so it is wearing one. The car also has the same 5 speed gearbox as the +8 and thus e.g. the same readily available new mounting bushes from Melvyn that I installed late last year). [LOL].
