Today we are most fortune to bring you the world famous, Porsche Factory built FIA Group C, 962 with chassis number 962-127.\r\n\r\nVia my parent company back in San Diego, no less than 45 different 956 and 962 models and by some accounts more than 50 of these have come and gone through our hands including both the Le Mans winning Rothman\u2019s Team 956 and 962 and the hugely successful IMSA 962 HR1. So just in case, if an actual 962 is momentarily out of your budget, make sure to check out another BaT auction that is now live where you can purchase the door from HR1. (I will post a link to that auction shortly.)\r\n\r\nAnd so yes, I have quite a bit of familiarity with Porsche\u2019s legendary 956 and 962 models but other than some practice laps at Daytona, I have never actually raced one. I am as such completely available for minimal expense and a meal or two if the new owner of 962-127 needs a driver.\r\n\r\nInterestingly, this 962 has had just three private owners and by pure coincidence I know all three. The first owner, Bernie Ecclestone only casually as on both occasions when he called he was quite angry and yelled at me profusely. During the 1987 season, it was shared by ever famous 956 and 962 veteran racers, Vern Schuppan and Keiichi Suzuki at various events at the Suzuka and Fuji tracks. They did particularly well at the latter, placing second twice and third once. \r\n\r\nFor the 1988 season, it was rebuilt at Porsche and repainted in a new livery. It would wear several over the next few decades! It was raced only once in 1988 in this paint scheme with Keiichi Suzuki and Franz Konrad retiring from their race at Fuji. For the first six of its nine races, 962-127 wore the race number 100 for which it became quite well known. He would retain the car through to 2005, when it was acquired by Bruce Canepa. His company restored the car to full running order and prepared it for historic racing. The original \u201cspool\u201d type differential was replaced with a Salisbury Limited Slip differential for on track reliability and the Bosch 1.2 MP Moronic injection control box was replaced by a Motec unit. The Motec allowed for near unlimited tuning ability while the Bosch unit was designed for fuel efficiency as a result of the FIA rules changes mandating minimum fuel consumption between pit-stops at Le Mans. (Both original items were maintained and remain in the vehicle\u2019s spares package.)\r\n\r\nThe car was then purchased by Canadian Olympian and racing legend, Lorne Leibel who campaigned the car regularly with great success at a variety of events including appearance at the Monterey Historic Races in 2009 and 2010.\r\n\r\nIn 2017, this 962 was sold and purchased by a well known East Coast collector and racer who also enjoyed outings with it several club events until Covid came along and ruined everyone\u2019s fun.\r\n\r\nMost recently the engine was rebuilt by the legendary family crew at Dawe's Motorsports in Stroudsburg, PA. I will ask the owner what else he has but the spares are quite extensive.\r\n\r\nYou are correct, Dawe\u2019s Motorsports Development did far more than just an over-the-top engine rebuild. They have gone through the car and made it ready for any event the next fortunate owner wishes to attend. It is completely track ready and needs nothing at this time. The owner spent upward of $150,000 for services, repairs and track support. The engine rebuild was just completed and I will post a dyno test video later today.\r\n\r\nHow else can I assist?\r\n\r\nThe Corvette Daytona Prototype is the world-famous DP-01 004 @NicholasTZ1. It will be here on BaT in a few weeks. That racer ran a total of 74 races with 65 finishes, 18 overall wins and 34 podium finishes in a staggering six year active career. It took 2nd at the 24 Hours of Daytona and won the 2013 IMSA World Championship for Wayne Taylor Racing. Use the \u201cCONTACT SELLER\u201d button and I will email the full history and more details.\r\n\r\nAs mentioned previously @drawks, my company back in San Diego has had more than 45 different 956 and 962s come and go over the years. Two of them were road-legal Schuppan prepared models built from actual 962 race cars. They had minimal work to make them a \u201cbit\u201d more practical such as raised suspension and large side mirrors. I have two short segments I found of the car racing in Japan in 1987. I am trying to get permission to use video of the car being tested in Germany in 1989 after it was rebuilt by the Porsche Factory and sold to Bernie Ecclestone, but so far no luck.\r\n\r\nI have one short segment of the car racing in 2012 at Laguna Seca and I did get a really great set of footage of Malcom Ross racing the Le Mans winning 962 also at Laguna Seca and that will give you an idea of what one is like to race from an in car perspective.\r\n\r\nThe car Malcom is driving is 962-003 which I traded even with his Dad back in 1996 for his 250 Testa Rossa. I had always wanted a 250TR but none of the owners were wiling to sell one to me. I had 962-003 in the showroom and I took a 1/43rd scale model of the car and Fed Ex\u2019d to Malcom\u2019s Dad. When it arrived the next day he called and we made a deal on the spot and traded cars even.\r\n\r\nWe both to this day think we took advantage of each other which just means it was a fair deal of course.\r\n\r\nI hope every one enjoys the video\u2026\r\n\r\nYour bid is very much appreciated @901sport! Let us know if we can help further in anyway.\r\n\r\n@LeivEiriksson, the 956, 962 and IMSA, WSC and FIA Le Mans Class remain the major draw for top level historic racing both here in the States as well as Europe. You can watch upwards of 40 vehicles in August at the Monterey Historic Races and even larger grids at Le Mans and elsewhere in Europe. While it has been more than 20 years since I saw Malcom if you watch the video again, you will see he had a least 6 inches of headroom over his helmet. The 956 while monstrously successful had a significant safety issue in that if you had a front end shunt, your feet would be destroyed as the same ratio as the front end crumpled. It did however have a massively reinforced steel roll cage built into the design with deceptively large head room to keep even a tall driver safe in case of a roll over.\r\n\r\nThe 962 eliminated the safety flaw of the 956 putting the driver\u2019s feel behind the front axle and suspension set up while keeping the rest of the car\u2019s design.\r\n\r\nKeep in mind that there was massive concerns from Porsche and the larger racing community not to ever have another accident like the one that took Rolf Stommelen\u2019s life at Riverside. He was racing a client built 935 \u201cMoby Dick\u201d that had an alloy-tube frame. The roll cage was essentially made out of shower curtain tubing and when the rear wing failed the results were horrific and instantly fatal.\r\n\r\nThe previous owner of this 962, Lorne Leibel is over 6 feet tall and the current owner is 6\u2019 1\u201d and both easily fit in the car. In my only on track experience with a 962, I had to borrow seat padding and cushions from Paul Newman as I was pathetically too small to see over the steering wheel without them.\r\n\r\nI had many chances to race a 956 and even more in a 962 but was always a bit intimidated until a friendly chat with Derek Bell at the Daytona Grand Finale one year. He said if you can race a 935, the 962 will be even easier with better handing, braking and much more downforce. I most certainly fall into the lucky category but clever and wealthy have eluded me. While I have had some nice collectibles in my personal collection, nearly all I share stories on were company cars or cars clients let me drive and race for them in various events around the world. I do from time to time get to travel in the orbits and circles of some of the wealthiest of individuals but know my place, keep quiet and appreciate my own humble surroundings better than most.\r\n\r\nThe Testa Rossa went quickly to three different clients and remains with a husband / wife collector where it has been well cared and looked after for more than 20 years. We had several other TRs and at one time I did have a 500TR in my own collection and raced it all over the States and even took it to events in Europe but it has been with a client in Holland for the past 20 years or so and not likely ever coming back my way.\r\n\r\nI did very little driving with the Testa Rossa I traded the 962 with. I did however get a ton of seat time in 0738/TR before the new owner finally had me ship it to him in the UK. Same for 0666TR before it too went to a new owner as well.\r\n\r\nI heard back this morning from the owner of this 962. The seat currently installed came from one of Hans Stuck\u2019s 962s and he is an extremely tall drive, probably around 6\u2019 2 to 6\u2019 4\u2019. He and Dan Gurney were about the same lofty height. I learned most of the information I wrote down from Wayne Jackson, Ken Gold and Kevin and his son, Gunnar Jeanette. Those four had been heavily involved in the Porsche racing program and what they had learned and experienced saved me a lot of grief in the ensuing years.\r\n\r\nSince the early 1990s, our company, Symbolic had been buying these vehicles in bulk, many from the teams that had raced them in period and set them aside as technology moved on. From the very early 1990s, a slew of different 934/935 and 956 and 962s came and went. The ultra-exotic, Group C versions with water cooled heads and cylinders were popular with collectors but the historic racers wanted air / air cooled IMSA variants for their reliability and ease of repairs and maintenance.\r\n\r\nThe original 956 engine was a version of the relatively ancient, Type 935/76. This was based on the 936-engine which originally was built for the defunct Indianapolis race car program. The 956 version of the Type 935/76 engine used water cooled heads, air cooled cylinders and an air/oil cooled block. With an initial displacement of 2.65-liters and mechanical fuel-injection, it produced 620bhp with 1.2 bar boost pressure at 8,200rpm.\r\n\r\nThe original 956 was entered for IMSA events but turned down for multiple rule violations. The were as follows:\r\n\r\n-Alloy Roll Cage (Banned)\r\n-Insufficient Fuel Capacity (Car had 100-liters but maximum capacity for IMSA was 120-liters)\r\n-Non-production based engine\r\n-Safety related issues with front suspension design and pedal box being ahead of the front axle\r\n\r\nBack in Europe as the Group C program continued to be the top level of racing, fuel-efficiency became more important than overall performance as the FIA was focused on all vehicles running on at the pump octane rather than exotic fuel formulas. A change from the 935/76 engine to the 935/77 engine saw also the deletion of the mechanical injection system for a new BOSCH Motronic system with the 1.2 injection unit controller. These engine were offered in 2.8, 3,0 and 3.2 liter displacements. However the 2.8-liter engined was preferred as it was significantly more fuel efficient and allowed for more distance to be covered before pitting for fuel. Believe it or not, this was a huge factor and it led to multiple victories for Porsche. Cooling was still with water cooled heads, air cooled cylinders and air/oil cooled blocks. Rated output for the 2.8-liter engine remained 620bhp at 1.2 bar boost pressure at 8,200rpm.\r\n\r\nBack in the States, IMSA used a totally opposite approach. As long as the car retained a steel roll cage and maximum 120-liters of fuel and a production based engine, there were no limits or fuel restrictions.\r\n\r\nThe new 962 met all the rules IMSA required but reverted to an all new Type 962/70 engine which was based on the 934 engine and with 2.8 liter displacement, air cooled head, air cooled cylinders and air/oil cooled blocks with BOSCH EFI and a revised 1.2 management system, the rated output was 680bhp and still at 8,200 rpm.\r\n\r\nAt this point IMSA racing saw all of the teams switching to Andial built engines with 3.2-liter displacement. This engines were type 962/71 and they produced 720bhp and remained air/air cooled.\r\n\r\nBack in Europe for the 1987 season, the FIA lowered even further the octane rating which greatly affected any turbocharged entrants. To counter this, a new BOSCH 1.7 engine management system was incorporated and with an increase in displacement to 3.0-liters, and retaining the water cooled heads, air cooled cylinders and air/oil cooled block, engine output reached 740 bhp at 1.2 bar boost.\r\n\r\nThe FIA put further restrictions on fuel capacity and octane rating forcing the Group C 962s to revert to water cooled heads as well as all new water cooled cylinders system and retaining the old air/oil cooled blocks. This was not to allow more boost pressure but to squeeze more fuel efficiency from the design, The new engines built to this specification were the Type 935/83.\r\n\r\nThese extremely exotic, four-valve, \u201cwater/water\u201d engines produced the same 740bhp but engine life was extremely limited. It was not how many kilometers before a rebuild was required but how many heat cycles. These engines were and remain extremely fragile and woefully expensive to rebuild.\r\n\r\nAt the end of the IMSA program, Andial was getting 885 bhp on the bench and 800 in their cars but the overall design of the 962, even with aftermarket companies providing new chassis, was coming to an end. These final IMSA engines were the Type 935/86 and with 3.2-liter displacement, were officially rated at 740bhp. For the first time, these late IMSA engines now had water cooled heads but retained the air cooled cylinders, air/oil cooled blocks.\r\n\r\nWhat does all this mean today, some forty years after the 956/962 program began? If you are a collector and don\u2019t care about running or racing your 956/962, buy the most interesting and best history example you can find. If you want to go racing and spend the least amount of money, buy a non-Porsche tub, aftermarket manufactured example with an air/air, single turbo engine and a Motec injection system. \r\n\r\nIf you want history, authenticity, originality, performance and an ultra-reliable water / air engine and all in a Porsche built example\u2026 \u2026.look no further! With the exception of the large black squares remaining from original, in paint. The greenhouse window mask is gloss black paint.\r\n\r\nThe original blue block colors are still under the vinyl front fender grey blocks for exact matching, if exposed. \r\n\r\nThe red and black trims running down the sides and front bumper areas, are also paint but could easily be wrapped / hidden with white vinyl ... and the blue blocks on the rear quarter panels matching the front fender paint examples. reinstalled in vinyl over the white painted rear deck. The BIG RED squares are also in paint.\r\n\r\nThe grey blocks on the front fenders are vinyl and can simply be removed to expose the original painted blue blocks.\r\n\r\nWe \"modified\" the livery to mimic the \"LOOK\" of the Porsche Factory livery on all of the 2017 Le Mans Factory entries..\r\n\r\nThe rounded extended white vinyl windshield mask can also be easily changed back to blue.\r\n\r\nThe remaining original livery items were untouched. \r\n\r\nThese changes have been roundly praised as far as being a far more beautiful and current \"LOOK\" than the original 80\"s graphic design, while still easily recognizable as 962.127, leaving as much of the original as possible. My 1988 Jagermeister car has a carbon tub and various other panels. Early cars were fiberglass.\r\n\r\n-\tThe photos of the Schuppan street car are not of this car. That car is a full carbon tub designed for the road. I personally think it\u2019s confusing to have multiple photos of a completely different car (with a vin plate posted) that has nothing to do with this one on this auction. More info on Schuppan cars here for those who are interested: https://www.katanaltd.com/schuppan-cr-and-lm\r\n\r\n-\tGroup C 962 engines were air-water cooled from 1982 until about 1987 when the factory went with an upgraded water-water engine (that is not fragile, as this engine won Le Mans a few times). This engine was not \u201cofficially\u201d provided to the privateer teams, although our 962-106b RLR car had one installed in it somehow, we learned while restoring it, by uncovering a stealth photo taken in the pits.\r\n\r\n-\tThe engine block of the 962 is not cooled by air - pretty much oil only. Unless you count oil going to an oil cooler that then does have air flowing over it?\r\n\r\n-\tThe original air-water engine was not offered in a 3.2-liter displacement. They were also run in the original 2.65-liter configuration.\r\n\r\n-\tThe IMSA engines are essentially fuel-injected 935 engines.\r\n\r\n-\tThe water-water engines \u2013 I would not characterize them as \u201cfragile\u201d, on the contrary, we have seen more problems with cylinder heads cracking and leaking on the air-water engines recently.\r\n\r\nFor further clarity - this seems like a nicely put together car with a \u201cgo fast\u201d motor. In this case, the air-water cylinders have been machined off from the heads (they were originally electron-beam welded), and \u201cregular-style\u201d Porsche 911-style cylinders have been manufactured and put in their place. Porsche had problems with this initial design, but they were also running these cars flat out for 24-hours at a time (hence the fact that they electron-beam welded them together). For weekend racers and smaller jaunts, this design may work perfectly fine. I do not have information on their reliability, but it seem like a smart concept. Just to be crystal clear, this is an air-water motor, with an oil-cooled engine case (just like every other 911 engine out there). I have decent records for most that came our way from mid 1997 to the present and they number about 18 to 20 or so vehicles including at least one racer with no chassis number and the white road car I posted photos of that also lacked any identity. We actually got a title and registration for that one using a part number on a suspension arm \"962.331.021.00.AO\u201d, true story! I will add a photo to the gallery now showing the part number on the suspension.\r\n\r\nPrior to 1997, we had too many to count but amongst them was 962-003, the Le Mans winner and probably 20 or so 962 IMSA cars.\r\n\r\nI remember loading onto one of Ken Gold\u2019s trucks a 956, two 962s a Lancia LC2, Mazda 757, a Ferrari F40LM and a Ferrari 333SP and taking them to either Homestead or Daytona for a track event. I don\u2019t even fully recall which track but back then the entire load of seven cars did not have a single one of them that was worth more than probably $750K! Today none would be worth less than $1.5M to $1.75M and most much more...\r\n\r\nBack in the La Jolla showroom, we put a bunch of engines we had on display stand. We had a 2.65-liter 936 engine which was also used on the first of the 956 models and we had several 962C engines and at least one 962 IMSA engine. I think we sold all the engines as a package deal for $100K.\r\n\r\nI am uploading some showroom snapshots of 956-003 that won Le Mans in 1983. The seat on that one still had tape marks on the position settings for Schuppan, Holbert and Haywood.\r\n\r\nI am also posting some of 962-002 which also had a killer history.\r\n\r\nDoes anyone recognize 962 K8? Max Angelelli was the full time driver for all 74 races.
