The Cressida is a Lexus before there was a Lexus, and luckily back then you could get a proper station wagon. In the1983 model year the engine went to the 5M-GE which had a timing belt, unlike the 5M-E that has a timing chain. Another cool tid bit about the Cressida is, it has the same power train as the corresponding year Toyota Supra making this a 5 door Supra in disguise. In 1982 the wagons did not get the automatic shoulder belts like the sedans did, I believe in 1983 they did but I'm not 100% on that. If you look at picture 77 (I believe) that's the bottom of one the bumpers and the original sticker on the bottom of it says USA, both bumpers have it. The man I bought it from is the son of what he believes is the original owner and he bought it at University Toyota in Tampa. According to the carfax it was imported to Canada when new but that could have been the port of entry back then, this is just speculation. I know now they come into Jacksonville for the Southeast but back then I don't know. This is not the DOHC 2.8 that was used in the Supra. It is a 2..8 liter but is a SOHC that is easily identified by the cam cover. If i recall correctly, 83 was the first year the DOHC was used in the Cressida. I purchased in December of 1981 and brand new P Type 82 Supra which was totaled when hit by a drunk driver 6 weeks after I purchased it. As a young man and young father of a new baby boy my family insisted and persuaded me NOT to replace the Supra with another one so I replaced it with a more fitting \"family\" oriented car which was a sedan version of the car seen here. Toyota has and still has several US ports they use for US bound cars and wouldn\u2019t bring one into Canada only to ship it back down to the States. This is a Canadian Cressida. A new pan gasket, filter and fluid was installed\r\n\r\n@CarFoolLane I was always told the reason they didn't sell a lot of the Cressida's when new was their price point, the typical buyer walking into a Toyota dealership was not a Luxury car buyer. When Toyota decided to enter into this market, they needed to come out with the Lexus brand to justify the price and draw customers from Mercedes and etc. Funny side story, I know a large Ford dealership that was looking to expand their franchise line up and had a chance to be one of the early Lexus franchises and their general manager talked the dealer principle into buying a Daihatsu franchise instead, his rationale was...No one will pay that much for a \"fancy\" Toyota. When I was to the point of starting it and going thru the mechanicals the A/C compressor did not turn on. I went ahead and charged the A/C and it blew good and cold. That was about 9 months ago, the compressor is still coming on but it isnt as cold as it was. It evidently has a small leak, I went ahead and topped the freon off and it's cold again. Vehicles also didn't use to have a country code in their VIN as the 1st digit. If you look at a current USA build car the 1st # will always be 1, and Japanese car will be J, Canadian will be 2, German will be W and so on. I'm guessing this car was built prior to the standardization being fully implemented. It has a fully transferable Florida title with the actual mileage reading indicated on it. There is no issue at all with the title being 15 digits in any state. The son of the owner I bought it from told me that his dad bought the car when it was new in Florida, he was young at the time and believes he was the 1st owner. I'm not 100% on the CarFax showing it being in Canada, maybe this was done by the selling dealer due to favorable currency exchange rates or possibly due to no USA availability of these cars when they 1st came out. I really don't know and unfortunately the believed original owner is not able to be communicated with. If the car was actually being driven in Canada there would be more than the 2 entries in the beginning of 1982, they would have records of it. I hate to assume as I don't exactly know the details but I would believe, if it was a Canadian market car, there would-be documents showing it coming into the states. It makes more sense to me that it was an American market car that came thru Canada but??? It brings back memories for me. I grew up with two 1982 Toyota Cressida sedans. My grandmother bought one in October 1981 from Len Sheridan Toyota in Santa Monica and my mom liked it so much that she bought an identical one in April 1982 from Toyota of Oxnard (trading in her blue Datsun 200SX hatchback). Both Cressidas were cinnamon brown with beige two-tone metallic paint with optional brown leather. The two-tone paint package also included cinnamon brown color-keyed bumpers, rather than black ones. My grandmother's had an electronic trip computer, as well, with a little amber plastic cover over a keyboard located where the cubby spot is behind the transmission, under the stereo (and check out those graphic equalizers!), while my mom's just had a digital quartz clock. These are exceptionally special cars and they were ahead of their time. This wagon is definitely a Canadian model. The giveaways are the manual seatbelts (rather than motorized ones); the english/french 'unleaded fuel' sticker (the US model only had english); the celsius markings on the climate control panel (the US model had fahrenheit); the release knobs for the hood and fuel door (the US model had black pull switches, not dash-colored flush ones); the glove box and storage spot beneath it (the US model had a more wedge-tiered glovebox with no storage underneath; and, finally, the horizontal four-spoke steering wheel differs from the US-spec angular two-spoke steering wheel. It is noteworthy, as others have pointed out, that the gauge cluster is US-spec, with its '55' in red. At the time, NHTSA required that speedometers emphasize 55mph and only go to 85mph.
