The car is great just as it is, and I agree the auto is surprisingly crisp.\n\nThe extra engine was brought back by my buddy as a \"someday\" project if it was ever needed. It's both the engine AND transmission as one unit, so you get both, but it does not have any of the brackets or other parts for the swap. As I mentioned, it's unknown the condition of any of the parts, although he was told it ran when pulled (which we hear a lot I know).\n\nSo - it's there if the new owner would like it as a backup, to sell, or to swap if necessary. Other than the AA cam and smaller valves it was an S spec engine. It was a very quick car around town, but geared a little too tight for highway driving with a 3.7 final drive. But we were saddled with the 55 mph national speed limit at the time, so it didn't matter. I had it set up to start in second gear (a simple and easily reversible modification) which was perfectly adequate for street driving, although first could be selected manually. At Mini Meets East 1976 I won the autocross class that consisted of me and 11 'real' Cooper S's. The car was bone stock otherwise, including the wet suspension. And my Dad, who couldn\u2019t drive a stick because of a bad knee, drove the automatic S the 400 miles to the Mini meet. A 998 will obviously be less powerful but the transmission is very livable. I saw a nice, relatively low mile 998 automatic at a recent British car show in Denver and to be honest the owner said it was a bit winded running at highway speeds and 5,500 feet altitude \u2013 no reserves left.\n\nThe problem with not doing routine oil and filter changes has already been pointed out. Half the AA automatics I got for free died of clogged arteries in the transmission. The other problem is that the transmission shifts very hard by US standards, and the engine mounts, steady bars and inner U-joints can take a beating. The other half of the AA automatics I got for free had holes punched in the transmission case when a Hardy Spicer inner U-joint let go. For some reason it was usually the left U-joint. The hole was usually high up on the back of the case and I have repaired several of them with an aluminum plate epoxied over the hole. I see that this car has the later style constant velocity inner U-joints (pop joints?) so I think the problem with punching a hole in the case is eliminated.\n\nI would be very leery of using any oil type not specified for these transmissions originally. A wet clutch in a motor cycle is not necessarily the same as a transmission specifically designed to use standard automotive oils. You opinion and results may vary, but I'd use an oil that was originally specified for the engine. I used Castrol GTX in mine, and the modified engine and trans lasted another ten years when I put it back in an AA.\n\nI think that this is a nice Mini exactly as it sits. If the swap-it-to-a-manual cheering section is that serious, I assume they'll be in on the bidding and lining up engines and transmissions for a swap accordingly. But I think you should bid on it for what it is and listen to the sellers statement that it's not a project car. Definitely fun on the full throttle shifts but not bad on light throttle if you get the kickdown linkage right. You just have to keep an eye on the engine mounts and U-joints, but that was probably a bigger problem in the heavier 1100 models that put more strain on everything. I have the same issue with a mid-80s GM car that came from the factory with a thump shifter automatic - engine mounts have a definite life span.
