The biggest market was California, but it took until 1982 until they could pass the new emissions test certification from the last round in 1979. Every available 1979 model was sent to us California dealers to be sold as \"1979-1/2\" models until the 1982 bikes finally arrived in the dead of Winter 1982, which missed most of the market. The more emissions friendly, but fragile, 8-valve TSS arrived about half a year later in tiny numbers, and the public wasn't buying anything during the 1983 economic recession. Game Over for one of the best companies in motorcycling history.\r\n\r\nThis relatively rare 1981 version still has AMAL MKII carbs, while the 1982 needed Bing (BMW style) constant velocity carbs leaned out so much that the pipes glowed red. 1982 gas tanks were from Italy and had a much larger capacity, while this 1981 has the more pleasing and familiar traditional style tank, but still with shaded paint to match the side covers. Electric start was generally trouble free, although the sprag starter clutch bearing could go bad eventually. The tires are brand new. The gas tank question: The tank curves in so your legs/knees rest into the tank. You are seeing a shadow. The kick starter works just as good as the factory original electric starter. I did put a new starter on the bike when the engine was rebuilt. The Amal Carbs had to be rejected for this elevation. The carbs are new and were added when the engine was rebuilt by Triumph in California which is sea level. The carbs were rejected by the man man who set 14 world land record at Bonneville Salt Flats. There were several Dyno's done to reach the optimal jet size for this elevation. The bike runs great on the top end as the dyno shows. A slight difference between the MK2 ones as supplied in 82 to some home market bikes, is the manifold stubs. The Bings had a vacuum port within the carb and no vacuum stubs were needed in the manifold stubs for the vacuum balance hose. The MK2 had a very slightly longer manifold stub so these could be fitted.
