The seat was not really stepped up that much. Suzuki only made the 550T for one year in 1981. \r\n\r\nThey also made a 450T, with a twin cylinder engine. \r\n\r\nThe T models were supposed to fit between the cruiser L models. Which did have a very stepped seat. And the more sporty, for the time, E models. It handled well, but the bars were bent more like an older triumph. \r\n\r\nThe 550T did not sell well. I bought a new in the crate one in 1984 from the Suzuki dealer in Ithaca NY. They had acquired 5 of them from another dealer that went out of business. Paid $1495 cash. Drove it year round in central NY. Black, $1500. Loved the bike and still own it. Have put over 30K problem free miles on it and in '86 took it from Seattle to Yellowstone. My riding buddy had the GS450S, cafe style. The dealer had a great sale on these and we could order any option at 50% off. A couple of the things I got was the sissy bar, It was huge but came in handy for bungy cording my backpack to it for trips. Also, one of those plexiglass fairings. Think it was made by National Cycle. Made trips much more bearable. More recently, I purchased a red one like the one listed here. Only has 2200 miles and needs refreshing, but otherwise in beautiful condition. These bikes were made more for a comfortable riding position than canyon carving but handles better than my first street bike...a '71 Kawi H1 500. That's a bike I wish I still had. Traded it for a yellow '74 VW Super Beetle. In fact many of the Suzuki's lineup from the late 1970s into the mid 1980s...as I was the General Manager/Sales Manager at a Suzuki franchise during that period. \n\nSuzuki had 4 models of these GS550 series in 1981: \n> A \"standard\" GS550...with spoked rims\n> A GS550\"E\"...with mag wheels\n> The GS550\"T\"...as shown here (fitting between the Standard/E & L models)\n> A GS550\"L\"...their attempt to appeal to buyers looking for a \"chopper-style\" bike\n\nThe only differences were...basically...cosmetic...but engines were the same. Seats/Tanks/Handlebars/Wheels/Emblems & Decals...and Body Panels...Fenders and such...to fit the style of each model were different. So...actually quite a lot. \n\nThe \"L\" models sold the best. \"E\" models 2nd best...and \"T\" models did sell OK (but much better when Suzuki heavily discounted them as \"left-overs\"). IMO...The GS550E was the bike to have (at that time)...but the L models sold much better. \n\nThe DOHC/8-Valve engines on these will run forever...if regular service is done. Not a powerhouse motor but very reliable. Suzuki also offered a GS550M/Katana in 1981...but not as a US model. They brought that to the US market in 1983 (or 1982?)...with the same 8-Valve engine...but in a very forward thinking style. As part of a group of radical designed motorcycles from the Hans Muth/Target Design of Germany group. Engine sizes from a 550cc to an 1100cc. 1983 also saw Suzuki offer a a 16-Valve/TSCC motor on the 550 (Twin Swirl Combustion Chamber)....and phasing out the 8-Valve ones.\n\nSuzuki made some great bikes back then. When they broke away from the 2-Stroke bikes...opting to compete with the other Big 3...with Honda being the dominate leader...they \"over-designed\"/\"over-built\" these late 1970's/ 1980's bikes to compete directly against Honda (who had many years experience in with 4-strokes and knew where to cut corners). I remember getting sales bulletins from Suzuki that were designed to aid in our \"customer pitch\" against Honda...and they highlighted the design/build differences between Honda & Suzuki.\n\nThis particular bike looks quite nice/well-preserved. I'm sure there are relatively inexpensive OEM type/size replacements available. \n\nThat rear rack was, most likely, put on the bike when new...and grab rail...discarded. No big deal. The rack's ugly...but very useful (especially w/that adjustable load feature). From my days/years of that era...running a Suzuki franchise...that rack looks to be a \"Connecticut Cycle\" brand. \n\nSomeone took decent care of the bike...and was stored well. Usually you find the engine case with all sorts of corrosion from the clear-coat peeling on these GS models of that era. This one's clean and very presentable. Entire bike is...for that matter.
