GM's downsized brigade that debuted in 1977 set all kinds of records. Let's look at Cadillac as a proxy for GM in total. Ever wonder what the best selling model year of Cadillac was? Younger people with screen names like @BRZbro would maybe guess one of the iconic years from the most Cadillac-y period, 1959-1969. The '59 with those tailfins? The '65 that famously beat the Rolls-Royce in that Road & Track comparison test? The '69, like the black Coupe DeVille for sale here that everyone likes so much?\r\n\r\nNope, 1977 outsold all of those years. And '78 outsold '77. The very best year in Cadillac's history was '79, with 383,138 units sold, which set the division's record. Not '49, '59 or '69, it was '79.\r\n\r\nAs for the design, I agree someone might look at this Olds and think it was a Cadillac but not the other way around. There were three wheelbases, a short for the Chevy version, a medium for the Old/Buick versions, and a long for the Cadillac. The Cadillac's extra came from pushing the front wheels forward to give it an even longer hood and more stable ride. \r\n\r\nIn 1980 the full-sized Cadillac got a facelift to make it look more like the '76 Seville, and that model's styling was so well received that it lasted until model year 1992 virtually unchanged. Imagine that going 12 years unchanged when the industry moved from the box to the lozenge. The Chevy Caprice got updated to the bubble look in '91, but they put that off for the Cadillac because the old one looked so good, i.e., very similar to this Olds you are complaining about.\r\n\r\nAs for quality, you could have the hoses and belts checked, oil and coolant changed, and drive this Olds across country the next day. You'd been doing that in complete comfort with ice-cold A/C, plenty of power and excellent MPG due to the 2.41:1 rear end. Good luck finding a '77 Datsun 810 or '77 Cressida to take on that same trip. That shows how long the stereotype of the 70s can persist, from the constant media criticism which was a kind of fake news when I was growing up. Customers loved this era of styling and driving feel from GM. \r\n\r\nConsider the top-selling model of the decade, the '76-77 Olds Cutlass Supreme 2-door. The automotive media rarely covered GM's \"Colonnade\" series, and yet the line sold like crazy. The CA dealers would order up heavy on the handling packages; I could tell that as a kid from the jumbo rear stabilizer bar GM made sure you could see from the car's rearview. The front suspension was the same as the Camaro and Firebird. (Speaking of Firebirds, who doesn't love the Smokey & The Bandit Trans/Am, another GM hit from 1977.)\r\n\r\nEveryone talks about GM's glory days and how their market share peaked at 50% in 1962. Do you know what it was in 1979? 46%. That's 46% of a much larger total market and ten years after the Japanese had started selling here. The 50% market share in '62 had no foreign competition. \r\n\r\nAnyway, what underpinned the downsized '77 B and C-bodies was a modified version of Cutlass's A-body chassis, with all of the inherent goodness in handling. That level of steering response and control, married to the isolation and solid feel from the body-on-frame construction, was unique in the industry. They got rid of the previous generation's frameless door glass and cut 1,000 lbs. out of the curb weight. It wasn't just that the cars looked good and were affordable, they were great to drive and lasted a long time too. Check out David E. Davis's review of the '78 Cadillac Coupe DeVille for a rare, honest take on the classic American luxury car. \r\n\r\nMagazines bullied GM into going the direction it did in the 80s, and domestic-haters can blame THAT on the company's downfall, not on what the products were like in the '70s. All GM had to do was use the money from one of those failed FWD unibody programs, that the pundits begged for, to pull ahead the 4-speed O/D transmission and fuel-injection by a few years. If they did, a late-70s Olds 98 with the 307 V8 FI + O/D would have gotten 18 city, 27 highway, and we'd be having a different conversation. Instead of just one superb performance sedan in 1988, there would have been several Buick Grand Nationals, including a Seville version. The only thing that held back the GN was its interior, which could have been upgraded if they gave the program the budget it deserved. \r\n\r\nGM should have improved the A and B/C platforms to last another two decades, and don't tell me that couldn't be done. In 2003 Ford revised the RWD Panther's frame, redesigned the front suspension, and added rack-and-pinion steering in place of recirculating-ball. With those changes, Ford had the best driving full-sized BOF car of all time. That shoulda been GM in the 80s! Please note Ford managed to justify the investment for the platform changes even though the Town Car was a low volume program by 2003. GM would have been able to spread its cost over millions of units in the '80s and '90s.\r\n\r\nThere's been an anti-70s bias at the Big 3 headquarters too, and here's proof. Please look at how many times Lincoln tried to find a new corporate front-end design for their products. First, they wanted to use the '61-64 Continental's, as shown on the 1999 Aviator (?) concept car. Then they switched to the '41 Continental's, which came off like a whale's mouth and failed miserably. Today they have a generic front face that no one can remember.\r\n\r\nYou can almost hear the Lincoln Mark III shouting from some dark corner of the boardroom, \"Hey, what about me? I started the personal luxury car segment, remember?\". Or the Mark IV: \"I was the best selling Mark, pick me!\".\r\n\r\nI don't want to hear the Mark III's face won't work on a more modern shape (or crossover). That was the Mark VII, a huge success compared to the models that preceded and replaced it. Same with the 1990 Town Car -- it had a classic '70s Mark front on a more aero body and looked fantastic, way better than the clunky 1980s TC or bubbly one from the 2000s. It was the best selling Town Car ever.\r\n\r\nThe press made a lot of fun of Lee Iacocca, but a guy like him is what the domestics need right now, in addition to the AV experts. The designers at Ford should be given the assignment to develop a proposal for the next \u201cface\u201d of Lincoln and make it look like a Mark III. (An order like that is how the Mark III came to be; Iacocca told the designers to put a Rolls-Royce grille on the T-bird.) Stick the sketches on the wall, make some models after that, and pick the best one. \r\n\r\nThe idea here is similar to the one that made Lincoln comfortable replacing alphanumeric model names like MK-C with Corsair.\r\n\r\nTL/DR version: If we look at the archetypal car from each decade, which was most like the full-sized trucks and SUVs that are so popular today? Regarding those rear sway bars on GM cars, I ALWAYS looked for those! The '79+ Malibu cop car had the most menacing silhouette from the rear - forget the front. The huge sway bar, dual tailpipes, a slight crouch due to all the gear stowed in the trunk, and tires that looked much fatter than their 70-series profile would suggest. \n\nAnd yes, the downsizing / FWD trend was a bit ill-fated. Imagine if they'd just refined the Nova platform and kept it going, instead of spending so much money on the X-cars. Though that Citation X-11 was pretty interesting for its time - almost seemed like something the engineers snuck past the guys in the executive suite. \n\nI remember when the \"large\" Cadillacs went FWD around 1984. My father actually bought an '83 Sedan de Ville that had been a dealer demo very late in 1983 because it was supposedly the \"last traditional Cadillac,\" as GM was on a plan to send all the RWD stuff packing. But people kept buying them, and they kept making them, all the way through 1991 I believe. Then that same platform became the 1992-1996 Fleetwood Brougham, eventually getting the LT1 Chevy V8. \n\nAnd why did they discontinue those last RWD big cars (Fleetwood/Roadmaster/Caprice/Impala)? Because they wanted to convert the factory in Texas to Suburban/Tahoe production, which to this day is still where they're made. Dealers kept sending in orders in 1996, and GM kept building the cars right up until November or December. A friend bought one of the last Impala SS models to come off that assembly line.\n\nBut back to the Corvette. The \"everything after chrome bumpers sucks\" crowd loves to tsk-tsk the later C3s, but it wasn't like Chevy's engineers were just sitting on their hands the whole time. The car became a LOT more easy to live with in those later years. Better ride, better sound insulation, air conditioning and cooling systems that allowed use in Phoenix traffic in the summer, and so on. And there were incremental increases in power after the low point of around 1976. I believe the L-82 350 was making 225 hp or so by the time it was discontinued, and the car magazine testers of the day were suitably impressed. \n\nI'd love to find a mint, fully-loaded '77-79 Chevy Caprice coupe (those had the cool \"bent-glass\" rear window) with the 350 V8 and F41 suspension. There was one headed for a traditional auction somewhere a few months ago, but I didn't follow up. I have an '86 Brougham, the same car as your dad's but with the Olds 307. I've gotten 24 MPG highway on Arizona gas, which doesn't have all of the ethanol we do here in CA. If you want more power on the '86-90 Brougham, an easy swap is to put in the Olds 350 (like the auction car has), keeping 307 auxiliaries to pass smog. Likewise, you can pop the 200R4 transmission from my car into anything with a TH350 and give it overdrive; they are the exact same size. I'd leave this 98 the way it is but add a rear sway bar -- my Cadillac has a factory bar that makes the car feel surprisingly nimble. I miss seeing the B/C-bodies and Cutlass Supremes on the road, they gave me a favorable opinion of General Motors growing up.
