Regarding swapping a V8 into a Pinto that is about as common as a V8 in a Vega, the factory never did it because they were designed as an American economy car originally first with a pushrod 1600 4cyl out of the Cortina and then the German 2000 and later the American 2300, by the end of the 10 year model run they built over 3 million of these little cars many built for the California (WEST COAST) market as this one in Milpitas California (also called San Jose assembly). It didn't take long for guys like Dyno Don Nicholson as well as Gapp and Roush to stuff fire breathing V8's in Pintos, you might have heard of Jack Roush and his Fords. These cars were very light and as with many cars over history AC Cobras, Sunbeam Tiger, Scarab 240Z etc, light weight and big horsepower work. Also it is funny people remember the negative press the Pinto got for blowing up I wonder if they remember the Bronco II with its high center of gravity and short wheel base every single one flipped over, very dangerous, they replaced the Pinto as Fords problem car and the solution was make it a 4 door and problem solved, A Chevrolet S10 Blazer had the same issue as well as the Jeep CJ5 and blowing up as well as a Vega with a full tank. Sometimes people believe what ever they read unless it's on the internet then its fact. You also never hear about Electric cars catching on fire. The Pinto platform was the Rodney Dangerfield of automobiles however they did quite well in terms of sales and profit for Ford which we overlook. They also did quite well in IMSA RS racing as they handled quite well. When Interpart suspensions marketed as (Mullholand) came out with shocks, springs and sway bars for these little economy cars like the Datsun 510, Toyotas and all the other Japaneses imports in the 70s they also did for the Pinto and Vega. They did a test for lateral acceleration (cornering ability) with Mullholland equipped Datsun 510 and Pinto and compared them to Porsche 914 and the Pinto with better sway bars cornered the best. GM was losing sales with the Vega and its junk 4cylinder so they put a V8 in them and called them a Monza, and in 1974 the Mustang who like many Americans got fatter and wider became the evolution of the Pinto and by 1979 became the FOX body Mustang which was a lot closer to a Pinto than a 1969-1973 Mustang. If you go back in time the homely Ford Falcon built on the same Milpitas assembly line became in 1964 1/2 the original Mustang, if you watch Ford v Ferrari you see that assembly line when Falcon became Mustangs. Its evolution like when I see a Fox body Mustang I think of a Pinto, I have owned many Mustangs in my life the last one I sold here on BAT last year for $60k, probably the nicest most original 44k mile 1966 GT Fastback I have ever seen. I also have had several early Falcon Sprints, and let me say the apple didn't fall far from the tree in terms of handling. With all that said YES a V8 swap can and has been done many times. Regarding this particular car with my first thought would be a Coyote engined Pinto, lots of horsepower and light weight. This little German V6 runs so well and the previous owner told me the 79k on the odo is the actual miles how ever federal disclosure laws only go back 10 years so this 48 year old classic is being sold Exempt. Federal Odometer disclosure laws go back 10 years as the average American drives 15k miles per year or say the average 2014 Altima should have 150k, this car is 47 years old with just 79k miles, (Bat rounds up) with that being said it did spend a great deal of time stored in a garage in Olivehurst California. Because it is over 10 years old it is being sold miles exempt. With a car that has been stored and unused people say yea great its got low miles which means the valve cover gaskets, the oil pan gaskets, all the fuel and coolant hoses get dried up and start leaking which is normal. With that being said in my life around automobiles I have known lets say Porsche people that replace every lug nut every time wheel comes off, I know BMW people who would never park their car in the garage with out tire cozy's so the tread is not touching the cement or Corvette people who never leave the house with out a Corvette wind breaker or hat. They are enthusiastic and passionate about their cars. I can give examples of several other folks that are very passionate about their cars and love fixing all the weak links. This particular example is the first time in over 40 years where I met a very passionate and knowledgeable member of the Pinto Community (which was also new to me) who liked nothing more that to replace all of the wear items that could fail such as hoses, gaskets etc not just from use but from lack of use. The sensational news about these things was based on one being rear-ended when STOPPED ON THE HIGHWAY to retrieve the gas cap after refueling and was rear ended by a Chevy Van doing 50mph... Only issue was the 2.3L I-4 camshaft issues... had one break... was making noise before it happened, was heading back to the Motor Pool with it on the Autobahn when it finally failed, managed to get it into a rest stop before it completely choked to death. \n\nHad the 2.0L in both '73's and that was a fine engine. Don't recall having one with the V6, but that would have been fun. Had to replace the camshaft in the last Pinto wagon with the 2.3L that I owned, a friend had a spare one laying around so it wasn't a big deal. \n\nThe runabout I had on the autobahn was capable of 120mph indicated... but over about 90mph the fenders and hood were moving about quite a bit... only did that once. :) cruising at 80mph or so was fine and had a nicer ride than a Ford Fairmont.
